THE AXE Axe Staff works hard. Many hours of hard work go into making up our school paper, The Axe. The Axe does a great service for the school by serving as the main means of communication. This paper keeps the students informed on coming events and reports of activities which have already taken place. In the two-week period between each paper, there is the incessant job of gathering news material for the next publication. Ken Friesen has done an outstanding job as this year's editor. Linda Mackprang, the Associate Editor, has also done a good job. Linda was chosen as the outstand- ing student in Journalism from South Eugene High School. .Kg Linda is congratulated by Eleanor Roosevelt A after being named outstanding journalism student. 33 Axe Staff gets ideas from other school papers,

HANDBOOK STAFF ROW I - Rhea Harding, Jayne Sagen, Gloria Reinertson, Diane Bressler, Kitty Button. ROW 2 W- Lonny Amick, Leonard Wassom, Eric McCready, Sharon Strong. ROW 3 - Jane Carter, Nancy Wicklund, Marcia Bishop, Carol Scott. '58-'59 Each South Eugene student is given a handbook. This book contains information on all clubs and activities in school. It also gives vital information to Sophomores and new students and added information for the returning upperclassmen. This committee worked during the summer months pub- lishing the student handbook. Much of their summer time was given up in order to have the handbook dis- tributed before the beginning of school. The major task was that of editing the handbook by the editors. These positions were capably executed by Carol Scott and Eric McCready. 32

TI-I E LAST GRADUATE . He has been principal of our school for fifteen years, and has devoted the major share of his efforts toward making this an outstanding American high school. Not only has he been the principal of the school, but he has also tried to be the Lprincipal' friend of the student body, faculty, and staff. He is to be congratu- lated on his promotion to a more responsible position in our school district 3 but it is done with mixed emotions, for each of us has de- pended upon him for leadership and profes- sional guidance. We wish him good luck in his new duties with the knowledge that some part of his heart will always remain in our school. As a member of the largest graduation class in our history, we would like to say farewell to Mr. Dean Mickelwait - The Last Graduate. Getting the message. 34 At rest
