Student Body. PLAYCDFF GAIVIE Life can be one disappointment after another. Such is the case of the South Eugene Axemen, who dropped the game which would have garnered them a place in the State Tournament. This team, one which was the victim of pre-season predictions that they would not have either the material or experi- ence to make a successful bid for district honors, fought right down to the wire before being nipped out of a berth in the state play-offs. Plagued by in- experience and the strange but disastrous effects of wanting to win too hard, the Axemen can only say, Wait until next yearla' After a season which could only be that of a story book team, the Axemen came out of the fracas with a tie for second place with the North Bend Bulldogs. A Hip of the coin decided the playoff spot for the two teams with South Eugene receiving the advan- tage of playing on their own court. Both teams, V ,ss X ,, mana, 4, ,. wi . . . 11111 .1 V- ... K . The first quarter was filled with an agony of missed shots and missed free throws as the pressure started to take its effect. At the end of the first quar- ter, both teams were even with only 4- points apiece. Things began to warm up a little in the second quarter as the Bulldogs pulled ahead for a 20-16 halftime lead. The second half saw both teams trade basket after basket with the score never being sep- arated more than five or six points. North Bend's ability to control the boards was the deciding factor as they out-rebounded the Axemen better than two to one. Late in the third quarter, the Axemen finally regained the lead on one of Dave Wetzellls eight charity tosses, However, North Bend countered with a iield goal and were never headed after that. Late in the fourth quarter when po-ssession of the ball was of the most importance, captain Wally Expressions express importance of the game. Larsen leaps to put one in. A little higher, Wetzell.
