WRESTLING This year's wrestling team, co-captained by Larry Baxter and Bruce Glenn, has enjoyed a successful season. They Finished third in the district with a record of 3 wins against 5 losses. They were victor- ious in matches with Willamette, North Bend, Springfield, and St. Francis. Their victory over Springfield marked the Hrst time that a South Eu- gene High wrestling team has ever defeated Spring- field in a dual match. Since the wrestling season is in juxtaposition to that of basketball, the wrestler receives limited recogni- tion for his efforts. Another reason for this is that it has not received the publicity accorded other sports. In order to become a successful wrestler, a boy must be in top physical condition. The conditioning pro- cess for wrestling is tougher than for any other sport. It is not unusual to find them bouncing around in that little room beside the gym late in the afternoon, long after everyone has called it quits for the day. In order that boys of all sizes, shapes, and forms may compete successfully, competition is divided into 13 weight divisions, which range from 98 pounds up to 191 pounds. Anyone weighing more than 191 has to either reduce or wrestle in the un- limited division. Unlike most other sports, wrestling allows you to compete against boys your own size and weight, making it a truer test of skill and en- durance than the majority of other sports. Coach Bob Williams was heard to comment that this year's team was the most evenly developed and strongest team to represent South Eugene while he has been here. In his opinion Bruce Glenn, Larry Baxter, and Steve Wilhite were outstanding members of this year's team. I On their way to the Championship the Axemen racked up 4 out of 5 conference wins, losing only by a slim margin to a top California team. During the Championship meet the Axemen's 'crelayersn set a new record in the medley relay by finishing in 1 :32.7, bettering the old mark by 1.6 seconds.
