Kit Miller an ' 7 'K 'J k f if I 1 1 I Q s Gary Howard ,.-ved' t c ss I A , A Dave Garrett KIT MILLER - Kit has played two years as a hard fighting halfback. During this time, he has had many outstanding experiences, but the two that will be re- membered, are a beautiful sixty-seven yard run in the Roseburg game and beating Marshfield in 1957. PHIL NEWMAN - In Phil's two years of varsity play, he has filled two positions, guard and tackle. He has had many instances that are outstanding to him but the one thing that makes him feel the best is pleasing Mr. Barnhart. GARY HOWARD - Hardiighting Gary is known to everyone for his great efforts this year. Gary filled the guard and line-backer positions until the Klamath Falls game when he took a wrist-breaking fall to end his football for this year. Gary seemed to get his biggest thrill out of just mauling his opponents. MARVIN MATHEWS - Marvin, a senior, has stuck to one position, tackle, all three years at SEHS. He seemed to get his biggest thrill when we won our first game of the season after being edged out of our first four. DAVE GARRETT -- Dave has had two very rough years of playing varsity football while he filled the half- back and end positions. Through his efforts, Dave dis- located his shoulder and was unable to play in a few games. He seems to enjoy smashing our pursuers and winning the game. MELVIN MATHEWS - Melvin, a senior, played one position, tackle, all three years at SEHS. He seemed to get his biggest thrill when we won our first game of the season after we had lost the first four. FRED Von APPEN - Fred played as a tackle this year and as an end when he was a Sophomore. His most exciting moment was when he took the kick-off in the Hudson Bay game and ran it back. Fred looks like a good prospect for next year's varsity team. NICK CARTER - This is Nick's first year of varsity play. He stuck mostly to the fullback position. Nick had a very good year this year and is a good prospect for next year's varsity team. Jim Muhr Wally Larsen Ken Tuttle VARSITY LETTERIVIEN IIM MUHR - In the last two years, Jim has played two very important positions as a halfback and quarter- back. He began this year's season as a halfback and then later switched to quarter. Jim had a good eye for passing but the one pass that seemed to be his most successful was one that he hurled to Wetzell for six needed points in the Springfield game, MERLE BRUCE - Big Merle finished his second year as a varsity center this year. A center does not get much recognition for any great runs or anything like that, but where would a team be if they didnit have anyone to hike the ball. WALLY LARSEN - Wally CDiggerj had an excep- tionally good season this year as a halfback, until the Albany game. Wally was doing great work with about 100 yards of rushing stacked up in the first quarter when someone tripped him up. This fall was ufatalu as it resulted in a dislocated arm, but Wally and many other people will not forget his efforts this year. DAVE HAZLITT - Dave has played the major part of the last two years in varsity football as a halfback and fullback. While playing in these slots, he has had many thrilling experiences. The one that will be remem- bered the longest is when he scored against North Bend. KEN TUTTLE - Ken, a hard fighting senior, filled the quarterback position at the beginning of the sea- son and later switched to halfback. This is the second year of varsity for Ken. He received the most excitement by just plain winning a game, especially the game against Albany. STEVE WILHITE - During Steveis two years of var- sity football, he has played guard and some tackle. One of his biggest moments in football this year was when he recovered a fumble which led to our roaring touch- down against Springfield. JOHN READ - Little John has played varsity foot- ball for two years. As a tackle, John has had many crushing experiences but the one that appears to be his most outstanding is when we scrambled over North Bend for a 14-6 victory. Through Johnis magnificent efforts this year, he was awarded the Simmons Cup. DAVE WETZELL - During Dave's two years of play- ing football at SEHS, he seemed to like the end posi- tion and stuck to it. In the Springfield and Albany games, Dave made two spectacular catches that were thrown him. He just seems to have the 'fhandsu for it. Bruce Daggett Mark McCulloch Bob Andreason - Manager x Gerald Mitchell - Manager BRUCE DAGGETT - For his first year of playing varsity football, Bruce has done a great job as an end. He has had many exciting games this year and thinks the team did a very good job of playing football. Bruce appears to be a very good prospect for the SEHS 1959 team. GARY STOCKS - Gary filled the halfback position very well for his first year of playing on the varsity team. Garyys biggest thrill in football is to see our team really get in there and beat our opponents. Gary seems to be a good prospect for next yearis varsity team. MARK McCULLOCH - It appeared that Mark had a very good year for his first year of playing varsity ball. He played as a defensive halfback and also as an offen- sive halfback and also as an offensive quarterback. The one instance that is Markis most outstanding memory is a magnificent pass interception that he made during the SEHS - Springfield game. BOB FERGUSON - Bob is in his first year at South Eugene High and has had no previous experience. As an end and halfback, Bob had quite a lot of excitement. The one instance that stands out is when a Springfield player broke for the end zone and Ferguson floored him on the spot. The managers for the football team did an excellent job replacing broken helmet straps and shoe strings. The average spectator doesn't realize the job behind outfit- ting a football team and replacing broken equipment. The managers should be commended for their out- standing job.
