On your mark, gol Grab those ankles! Swimming leam This year's swimming team came through with six wins and one loss. Mr. Oyama, the likable swimming coach, said this team was among the very best he had ever coached. The team did a surprisingly good job considering the tact that many members were hit with the flu. They had seven meets, six with Oregon schools and ,one with a California school. The lone out-ot-state school, Shasta Union High School, was de- feated by the score at 45 to 44, During the whole season, the Axemen rolled up 487 points to 236 for their opponents. The swimming team had many stars. Dick Moody and John Gale, the co-captains, placed third in the state in their respective events. Ron l-leddinger, Bob Cross and Jack Pratt also did very well throughout the season Point your toes

Jacobson, Terry Tillman, Steve Kemler, Tim Jeans, Mr. Brenneman, Jerry Woolrver. Sophomore Basketball The boys go after ball. The sophomore squad, under the guidance of Coach Brenneman, began building for possible varsity competition with an l8 game schedule. The greenies, led by Steve Dunc, Steve Kemler, Steve l-lamaker, Prince Guske and AD, Jacobson, improved greatly as the season advanced. After much practice in the girls' gym, they boasted a 7-ll record. The sophomores had thrills of their own, such as an overtime win over Cottage Grove, resulting from a last second long shot. They squeaked by Roseburg, 47-48, and massacred South Salem, 64-47, a game in which Hamaker scored 22 points. l6l 1 l

Row 3: Allen Dunlap, Bill Connie. Dan 1-in-'A Although the grapplers started slowl' they improved rapidly and had a vei successful season. The season recor ended at six wins and six losses. TP team lost several matches by very sma margins. They lost to Springfield by th score of Z5 to 26, and lost to Rosebur by the same score. The contests wer not all losses, however. They defeate North Bend 26 to l6, and Willamett 47 to 9. Eugene entered five people i the state tournament, but the only on to place was Tom Bryant, who took fourtl in his weight class. This year's team ha. many sensational wrestlers. Some of th notobles were Tom Bryant, Dan lGrunt Guthrie, Larry Baxter and Bruce Glenn Bryant won i3 and lost l, and Guthrii won lO, lost l, and tied l. Wrestling, now a major sport, is at tracting more boys and interest thar ever before, due to the excellent coach ing of Mr. Williams.
