Eugene fights to gain control of the ball. Axemen Sneak Past Saxons The second game of the season proved much more exciting than the first game with Franklin. After the first few minutes the Saxons started to match the Axemen, point for point. The Saxons' Dan Moore looked very good during the first half. ln the third quarter, the game looked exactly like the first half, with South Salem continuing to lead Eugene. ln the fourth quarter the Axemen pulled awav not to be led again. There were many stars for the Axemen. Besides Warren scoring 31 points, Polhemus and Willener played terrific ball during the game, The Secret Weapon didn't get in until the fourth period. Eugene ls Off to a Good Start The Axemen, showing their po- tential, ran over Franklin 6l-32. In the first quarter, the game was very close, but once rolling, the Axemen broadened their lead, The first half not only showed how the team could work together, it also showed everyone that Charlie War- ren was going to start where he left off last season. Charlie scored 24 points in the first half. ln the sec- ond half Kuch pulled out all of his starters and played the rest of the team. Even though the whole team looked good, there were a few stars. Besides Warren, who scored 3l points, Johnny Polhemus, Tom Jones and Neil Goldschmidt looked great. The Secret Weapon wasn't put in until the last psychological moment of the fourth quarter. Axemen Throttle Engineers The men from Benson Tech have been given rough treatment in the two games played against Eugene High, ln Portland, the Axemen completely outclassed the Engineers, turning in a 92 to 63 score. On December 20, in Eugene, the Benson team was again royally defeated by the sharp Axemen. The Axemen, after being behind in the opening moments ot the con- test, established a 27-l2 lead. The score at halftime was 30 to 20. Eugene was never really threatened by Benson. SEI-IS out-scored the En- gineers 2l to 8 in the third period. Charley Warren was high scorer with 34 points.
