Don't just stand around get in there and fight! l Axemen Smear Klamath Falls The Axemen kept the ball rolling by mauling Klamath Falls 33 to l3. With only five minutes of the game gone, the Axemen got in the scoring column with a Warren pass to Polhemus. At the end ot the halt, Neut Senn passed Bert Clausen to ,Polhemus for the second TD. Again the Axemen hit pay dirt on a pass from Warren to Senn. Almost before the second half had really begun, Grunt Guthrie picked up a tumble and ran to the ten ard l'ne if ' 17 Larr Campbell Greg Willener nn. , 3. E -y I . Three plays later Senn took a pitchout and went for the touchdown. ln the fourth quarter, Greg Willener hauled in a Warren pass and then ran 25 yards tor the last touchdown. lo il's lla s lleall lloll Eugene Football Season ls Off to a Good Start Almost ZOO boys were met September lst by Loyd Amick and his very capable staff of coaches. This was the begin- ning of football practice. This week was mostly devoted to fundamentals, but it was also in preparation for the Beaver- ton game, which we won, Zl -7. Loyd Amick, commonly known as Loyd, did a wonder- ful job with a team that was highly underrated at the be- ginning of the season, Eugene, after being rated fourth in the district in the pre-season poll, was rated first in the state three weeks in a row. Axemen Stymie Beavers The Axemen started the season right by defeating Bea- verton. This was not only the first victory of the season, but the first victory for South Eu- gene High School. The Axemen got in the scor- ing column when Charlie War- ren passed to Johnny Polhe- mus with lO seconds left in the half. ln the second half, Larr Campbell fell on a fumble and three plays later Ray Allen went over for the touchdown. ln three plays Allen picked up all 26 yards for the TD. Steve Wilhite SEHS Tromples North Bend The Axemen smashed North Bend 43-12 to chalk up their eighth straight win. The first six times the Axemen had pos- session of -the ball, five TD's and one field goal were scored. ln the first quarter Tom Bry- ant, Johnny Polhemus and Greg Willener ran for touch- downs. SEHS scored two touch- downs in the second quarter: one by Bryant and the other by Polhemus. Rich Cerkoney then kicked a field goal. lt was the first field goal in the athletic history of our school. The last touchdown of the game was scored by Larr Campbell. This was a great offensive game for the Axe- men. Hold on, Johnny! Both teams scramble after HIE lllll- Dave Ngetzell GUY Afmsffm. Axemen Edge Lions The Axemen scored six touchdowns in trimming Cottage Grove 4l-O. When Larry Senn ran the kickoff 64 yards to the Lion 29-yard line, he gave the crowd a sample of the rest of the game. Three plays later Charlie Warren threw to Johnny Polhernus for the first Axemen touchdown. After an- exchange of fum- bles, SEHS marched 32 yards to the Lion one yard line. Warren went for the sec- ond TD, ln the second quarter Greg Willener smeared the Lion quarterback for a safety. Six seconds remained in the first half when Warren hit Senn for the third TD. ' . ln the third quarter Cerkoney took a Lion punt and ran 49 yards' for another score, As the third quarter ended, Tom Bryant went three yards for the fifth touchdown. The last TD came when Kit Miller ran 42 yards to score. It was an easy victory.
