XXII For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted; 2 3 a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; ' 4 ' 5 a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep and a time to cast away; 6 a time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; 7 a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace KING 8 What gain has the worker from his toil? Ecclesiastes 3: 1-9 RSV Administration Principal Mr. Coye Lewis Assistant Principal Mr. Thomas Bogue Secretary Mrs. Meredith Webb These six people are a very important part of South Edgecombe School. They keep the school system running smoothly and efficiently. Mr. Lewis and Mr. Bogue have the task of keeping order at S.E., and Mr. Hall takes care of problems concerning the whole county Mr. Bogue and Mr. Massey assist Mr. Hall. Mrs. Webb is a big help to everyone by making announcements, running off tests for teachers, and running errands. « Administration Dedication We the members of the 1970 Annual Staff have chosen to dedicate this edition of the MACCRIPINE to one who has shown tremendous school spirit and much personal concern for South Edgecombe High School. This person is a native of Pine tops and an outstanding leader in community, school, and church affairs. He is a very active member of the Pine tops Methodist Church and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Wesleyan College Foundation. He is a member and past president of the Pinetops Lions Club and has served as Commander and Chaplain of the American Legion Post 316. He was graduated from South Edgecombe High School in 1944 and from North Carolina State University in 1949. He is also a graduate of the Executive Program of the University of North Caro¬ lina. Although he is employed at the present as Regional Vice President of the PLANTERS NA¬ TIONAL BANK and TRUST COMPANY of Greenville, North Carolina, he still finds the time to support our F.T.A., and above all, our school. Thus, we dedicate our annual to Mr. Norfleet L. Sugg, and say, Thank You! 12 DEPARTMENTS Department Of Music Mrs. Miller, chorus director, is pictured here at some of her routine duties. She has been a great sport putting up with our antics, whether it ' s read¬ ing comics at chorus practice or eating, sleeping, or talking during music appreciation class. 14 Mrs. Mary Patterson -- the commercial teacher looks forward to the end of each day after tiring hours of timed writings in typing and practice, practice, practice in shorthand. The scene in the bookkeep¬ ing class is journals, rulers and adding machines. As a junior, Ronald finds the typewriter a great help. Commercial Department Bookkeeping Shorthand Typing Though shorthand is not always THIS funny to Karen, it is a challenge. Typing is a challenge for first and second year students, especially timed writings and manuscript forms. Science Physics Mr. Thomas Bogue Science courses offer many opportunities. This year our school was blessed with three new facilities -- a laboratory with connecting classroom, and a dark¬ room. Physical Science Science Biology And Physical Science Airs. Gayle Felton Government, U.S. History, and Economics So¬ ciology are taught by Mrs. Felton, while Miss Barnes teaches sophomores (and a few juniors!) World History. Social Studies 18 Of Numbers Math provides a vast selection of job opportu nities. Mrs. Eason is a strong believer in the importance of bulletin boards, and she is able to bring new aspects of math to the students through these bulletin boards. Guidance Mr. Charlie Tyer Mr. Tyer is essential as he gives advice to his students on the institutions of higher learning as well as problems at S.E. If he isn ' t looking for information on a student, he is typing a letter to obtain information on a future school. m Language French Mrs. Carolyn Clayton Le cours de franqais? Mrs. Brenda Stallings Mrs. Stallings ' classes this year have had fun even while they studied. Mrs. Stallings entertained the Senior class by singing folk ballads. Making speeches, exercising proper breathing, and writ¬ ing term papers filled up the Seniors ' spare time. 1 22 Miss Annie Bames Language The freshmen and sophomores have enjoyed having Miss Barnes this year. They have been busy collecting poetry and making sc rapbooks about different civilizations in her world history and English classes. 23 Vocational Agriculture Mr. Richard Bradley South Edgecombe has a wide variety of courses to be taken in its vocational agriculture program. The pictures below and on the next page illustrate that agriculture does not pertain only to farming, but to many other outstanding occupational opportunities in the fields of carpentry, mechanics, forestry, and horticulture. Classroom instruction plays a great part in teaching students in vocational agriculture, but work outside of the classroom helps a person to understand the things he has learned in the classroom. Tool Identification Horticulture Carpentry Mechanics Mr. James T. Abrams Forestry WOOD s Vocational Home Economics The Home Economics Department strives to teach young people the basic principles of home and family life. Girls and boys alike are taught to cook and sew. Home management and good grooming are also part of a good economic education. Physical Education Good fun and cleanliness are an important part of P.E. Mr. Pittman and his student teacher, Mr. Vaughn, share the respons¬ ibility of teaching. The Health and P.E. course is required of all freshmen students. Mr. Keith Pittman Driver Education The 36-Hour Course That Saves Lives •Ml EMC 28 In the spring, Driver Edu¬ cation at South Edgecombe is taught by Mr. Bogue and Mr. Pittman at the end of the school day. Driving takes place in the summer. It includes 30 hours of class¬ room work and 18 hours in the car. Students must be 14 1 2 years old in order to en¬ roll in this course. The pur¬ pose of the course is to cut down on traffic accidents and to stress to teenagers the im¬ portance of safe driving. In other words, The educated driver is the safe driver. 29 Vocational Brickmasonry Mr. Ernest Morgan Mr. James Harrell ■I Training Carpentry This year, students at South Edgecombe and Carver were offered two new courses. They were a three-hour carpentry class and a three-hour brickmasonry class. These two courses have greatly improved the voca¬ tional programs at these schools and are designed for students who do not intend to further their education. Library Books Globes Films The library is: A giant brain, where all persons can seek knowledge. A memory of the human race. A MAGIC DOOR where one can step into a world of adventure and learning. Among them are the election of the chapter sweetheart, parliamen¬ tary procedure practice, quartet practice, installation of greenhands, and various FFA meetings. A FFA chapter often cooperates with people in the community by doing work around their homes, school, and public grounds. This year they chose Freddy Whitley, a senior. Freddy has been active in the F.F.A., the brother organization for the past four years. F.H.A. — Its Projects The F.H.A. is one of the busiest clubs at South Edgecombe. To raise money this year the club had a bake sale and also decorated the People ' s Bank in Pinetops. They decorated the bank with the theme Snoopy ' s Christmas in mind. A requirement for F.H.A. is to take Home Economics for one year. The girls learn many things through this course such as cooking, sewing, childcare, and housekeeping. Science Club Officers are: Mona Gardner, Vice-Pres.; Kirby Fuller, Treasurer; Lu Ann Clark, Secretary; Mike Eason, President; Nancy Morris, Reporter; Mike Wooten, Student Council Representative. Students who maintain a 90 average in science courses are eligible for membership in the club. One of its projects is sponsoring the science fair. 63 Beta Club Much business is carried out by the Beta Club Members in the course of a year. Their main project is raising money for the Beta Club Convention in Raleigh. In addition to money¬ making projects, they perform a service project each month. In December, they sponsored a toy drive which was a great success. Annual Staff The Annual Staff works hard each year to try to prepare a great annual for the students at South Edgecombe. Their first task is selling ads in order to lower the price of the annual. Other jobs include taking and cropping pic¬ tures, planning layouts, and writing captions that best explain the pictures. Annuals provide a brief summary of what happens during the school year, so students can look back and remember the good times and the bad times. The Annual Staff advisor is Mr. Bogue, and the editor is Mona Gardner. 66 Mixed Chorus h-Ul 12 . |11 gp M A MlH The Mixed Chorus was very busy preparing various programs during the winter and spring. Our annual concert at Christmas time in Tarrytown was a great success as was our concert at our school PTA meeting. Above are pictures of the chorus, accompanists, officers, and Quarternotes. They have worked hard to make South Edgecombe High School a more meaningful place to leam. Co-operation is a main key in running a smooth student government. Through the help of Mrs. Felton and Mr. Lewis, the Student Council has become a part of everyone. MM Molding students into conscientious citizens of tomorrow is one of the main objectives of the Student Council. It strives to inspire leadership and to uphold the standards of South Edgecombe High School. The success of the Student Council depends on the quality of our students.’ We believe our quality is the finest! 72 FTA TheF.T.A. stands for Future Teachers of America. It gives high school students exper¬ ience working with teachers while they are in high school. Some of their projects include making bul¬ letin boards, helping teachers grade papers, and watching classes while teachers are out of the room. It helps a student decide whether or not he would like to be a teacher. The tutoring system set up by the F. T. A. is of great value to the students who need extra help in their studies. Mr. Tyer, the advisor, works closely with Sharon and the rest of the F. T. A. members. No man ' s know¬ ledge, here, can go beyond his experience. I I I s 4 Bus Drivers Bus drivers have tried very hard to trans¬ port students to and from school safely. Before a person can obtain a bus license, he must take an eye test, a written test, and a road test. Another important part of South Edge¬ combe ' s transportation system is the help received from the county shop.
