They have been willing to go out of their way at any time to help us. These people have worked constantly for the better- ment of our school. By teaching the values of alert minds, healthy bodies, and Christian principles, they have enriched our lives. Lovely autumn leaves that swirl outside the classroom window remind the dreamy senior of peo- ple, events, and moods of the preceding four years. Each color . . . red, green, gold, brown . . . becomes the symbol of a year. Blazing red leaves are synonymous with the gaity and enthusiasm of 73 freshmen who ventured confidently into the experiences of learning new faces, schedules, routines, and initiations. Yes, there were also red faces for the many mistakes that were made in finding the way in this new adventure of high school. Blotting out the red leaf is a green one. More confident now, but still in the green stage of high school experience, the sophomores prepared to settle down to a good year ' s work; however, Hazel , the bursting of the school boiler, and the snow would upset each settling-down. These events forced students into the gym for classwork and produced part of our Christmas holidays before Thanksgiving. The green and red leaves have followed each other away, but glorious gold leaves fill the air and remind us of the productive junior year. There were yellow decorations for homecoming over which two members of this class ruled, and rich, heartwarming experiences of selling magazines and planning the Junior-Senior banquet, Paris in the Spring . The yellow gold of the class rings comes to mind as a yellow leaf falls and plasters itself on the window pane. With a gust of wind the gold retreats, but a warm brown leaf falls on the sill close by. It is rich in color, yet sort of sad and solemn — symbolic of the moods of the pensive senior who watches from the window. There is sadness in the thought that the fun accompanying the giving of the senior play, Don ' t Take My Penny , and the thrills of selling annual ads will not be matched again. Brown, the color of matured corn, reminds us of work done to earn money toward a New York trip. Now the brown leaf has joined the red, the green, and the gold. The colors of these lovely autumn leaves will soon fade away, but each year they will reappear in all their glory. In this same manner these precious memories will appear again. The memories may fade a little as time goes by, but they will always reappear and be treasured. 17 JESSIE ELLIS, Historian eniop MARY JOHN LITTLE BOBBY SCOTT These students have set up high goals and aims which they wish to reach, and they will be reached. hAARY E. Circulation Managers, Linda Sumerlin and Bobby Scott, have the magic touch in selling annuals. Mary Ellen Whitley and Janice Turner, Typists, try to get all the wording in the right places, a dif- ficult job. 46 Staff Business Managers, Polly Pitt and Diane Webb, are constantly checking copy for the ads. -f m ™ J m Some staff members relax during a pic- ture session, proving that even they have their lighter moments. Nancy Jones and Oneida Williams, Layout Edi- tors, play paper dolls as they seek an attractive picture arrangement. Sports Editors, Alice Summerlin and Bobby Cole, decide which ball games to cover. 47 Beta officers, Peggy Carr, vice-president; Polly Pitt, secretary; Shirley Varnell, treas- urer; Carolyn Dunn, reporter; and the ad- viser, Mrs. Robert Frazier, listen intently as president Diane Webb presides over a monthly night meeting of the organization. Additional members are Oneida Williams, Billy Edwards, Phil Smith, Peggy Harrell, Linda Sumerlin, Mary John Little, Kaye Hathaway, Nancy Jones, Sylvia Varnell, and (in inset! Phyllis Burgess and Jackie Burgess. Shirley Varnell is being instructed by president Diane Webb on how to prepare an absence report. Kaye Hathaway and Billy Ed- wards start to clear debris from backstage as a beginning of a Beta project to improve the dressing room. Beta Initiation Beta Tapping 49 Mrs. Margaret McDuffie, the glee club director, who puts a lot of time and thought in her work, endeared herself to oil the girls. Ann Martin and Mary John Little, accompanists, were al- ways on hand at Glee Club time to play for the girls. The Glee Club, composed of 50 mem- bers, met every Monday and Wednesday at activity period for practice on the va- rious numbers they were learning. The major performances of the year were at Christmas, at the Spring Concert, and at both the major commencement ex- ercises. Several times during the year, the girls sang in school assemblies. The Glee Club has indeed given much enjoy- ment to our students and the three com- munities. The Glee Club officers, Elizabeth Jefferson, presi- dent; Barbara Pittman, secretary; Kaye Hathaway, reporter; and Carol Lou Ellis, treasurer,- sort out music before putting it away. 51 OFFICERS: President, Peggy Harrell; vice-presi- dent, Peggy Carr,- secretary, Geraldine Ellis; treasurer, Doris Harrell; parliamen- tarian, Jessie Ellis; historian, Ann Martin; reporter, Audrey Abrams; songleaders, Myrna Harrell and Nancy Jones. ..America These girls are mak- ing Thanksgiving tray favors to be sent to the Veterans ' Hospital at Fort Bragg. Jane Corroway, Jackie Burgess, Dorothy Taylor, and Jock Mayo, the typists, found this job very tiring but interesting. With the clicking of typewriters, the shuffling of papers, and the babbling of excited voices, the Se Combe Echoes staff started on the tremendous job of publishing o school paper — the chief project of the F.B.L.A. All club members aided and assisted in any way they could. . They collected news, typed, and proofread all the copies.
