How ci day can be so frightening and at the same time so marvelous we don't know. When we got off the bus, it seemed as if everyone knew everyone else but us, When we went into the auditorium, it seemed that just about everyone in Edgecombe County was there and staring at us as if we were refugees from some war camp. Of course they weren't, but it seemed that way. The speeches that were made in the auditorium wel- coming us surely helped overcome that funny feeling we had acquired. As the day went by we began to feel as thouah we had been coming to high school all our lives, On the way home we decided that high school wasn't so bad after all, and, when we got home, we told everyone how nice it was. We didn't say anything about being scared at first, but, iust between you and me, we were. Through the activities of the year we developed a real sense of belonging, It has been fun. The directions of Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Griffin kept us from get- ting lost the first day. The girls got a big kick out of being initiated at school. tl guess we looked right cutem Many freshmen took part in the Halloween Carnival, the Band, and the Glee Club concert. We were proud of the fine work Peggy Harrell did as secretary of Student Council. Polly Pitt and Betty Barnes, cheerleaders, helped to create school spirit. This fall when we returned, with Mrs. Frazier and Mrs. Lupton as homeroom teachers, we felt very different from last year. We had a lot of unexpected holidays during our sophomore year. Hurricane Hazel came through and took South Edgecombe's roof and part of our school days. When the boiler burst, we took part of our Christmas holidays before Thanksgiving. This year we had five girls to be cheerleaders. Mary John Little served as treasurer of the Student Council. One highlight of our sopho- more year came when we served at the Junior-Senior Banauet. As we enjoyed that night, our minds were also filled with dreams of our own banquet to come next year. Oneida Williams Phyllis Abrams Elaine Baker Betty Barnes 4. QI' ' 4 Tx' l .l. P. We also have the memory of our Junior-Senior Banquet. We went to the planetarium in Chapel Hill twice. How will we ever forget our trip to the lake? Before we were half way there, the Blue Goose stopped operating. But luck was with us that day and finally we reached the lake-with hot dogs, ice cream, and boat riding as our reward. Donald Edwards proved to be a superrsalesman during our magazine drive. I know each of us will recall his special memories of the Junior-Senior Banquet. Proud escorts, lovely girls, sott music, and good tood completed a night of en- ioyment. If overcoming obstacles makes for strength, the seniors ot '55 should truly be strong. Many things happened to interrupt the regular schedule. On October 15, Hurricane Hazel passed through, leaving much destruction in the state. Many of our students lost parts of their houses. The roof of our building was picked up and dropped in the highway. About the time we had settled down to work again, the boiler burst and we had to be out of school tor two weeks. However, some of our work had to go on. Mrs. Phillips held practices tor our play in the agriculture shop. Mrs. Frazier and Mr. Thorne continued with the ball practices. The annual staff moved typewriters into the sponsor's home and worked there. Finally, we were forced to go back to school and hold classes in the gymnasium. That was something! Snow caused still further loss ot time. All of this necessitated some Saturday teaching. ln spite of the many problems, we could always find a way to have lun, too. In the second semester there were parties, trips, and the wondertul Junior-Senior Banquet to speed the time along to the great day of graduation. It is to be hoped that all of our school experiences served to tit us tor a rich lite of service.
