So it was with the sudden death of our principal, lVIr. Earle N. Fricker, a man who was an inspiration to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him . . . A leader who devoted himself to carrying on the noble traditions of South Di- vision. His wise philosophies made an impression on everyone who heard them. His never ending patience and cheerfulncss with students and teachers made him a friend to all. We shall remember how truly devoted he was to South when he advised us again and again: Dedicate your life by the best, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week . . . If every student who is privileged to grace the halls of South will so direct his life, we will have ltept faith, and our community will continue' to be a better place in which to live. I .,,..- 4 'E 1 principal alexander e. rnorstad Ringing the old school bell on September 5, Mr. Alex- ander E. Morstad ushered in a new era as principal of South Division. I am happy to come back homef' he stated when greeting students and teachers in Coblentz hall. Returning to begin his twenty-ninth year of service to the school, Mr. Morstad was absent for three years when he served as vice-principal of Rufus King and as principal of Edison Junior High. For promoting oratorical contests, for organizing cheerleading, and for faithfully attending sports activities, South's congenial principal received the affectionate title of Mr. South Division before leaving in December, 1952. To help students make high school years the best ones in life, Mr. Morstad advises, Plan your course so that you will have definite goals and objectives. Take advant- age of opportunities around you. Try to get along with people, be punctual, and above all, as Theodore Roose- velt stated, 'Live a strenuous life.' Coaches john Schram and Pat Jankiewicz started the 'year with a nucleus of only six returning lettermen. Highlighting the first game ofthe season was a spec- tacular 99-yard touchdown run by fullback Ken Fedor when South,battled the Juneau Pioneers to a 13-13 stand- still. Bad luck and lack of experience accounted for a 26- 6 loss against West Division. Fighting bravely, the Cards bowed to Bay View, 14-8, but their terrific defense paid off in the Tech game to the tune of 6-0. Unable to score against the title-bound King team, the Cardinals lost their own homecoming, 20-0. As they trounced North Division 36-6, things began 'to look brighter for the Schram-men. In a thriller at Pulaski stadium, the team romped over their old rivals, the Rams, 40-7. Emerging victorious in the last game of the city conference play, they beat Lincoln, 13-7. What promised to be a poor season turned out very successfully as South ended up sixth in the city confer- ence, which still placed them in the first division. Although they were able to score only one touchdown, the junior gridders showed good potential and an eagerness to play. Ex- cessive penalties and fumbles were some causes of their unimpres- sive season. The Yannigans were defeated by Pulaski, 6-05 Juneau, 13-Og Lincoln, 19-Og Tech, 14-6, and played a scoreless tie with Bay View. Building star passers and tacklers for the Varsity squad is our main objective, agreed Coaches Robert Lessl and Mark Haight. John Kapsos, Steve Stipanich, Stanley Wreczycki, and Richard Kloss displayed the best Varsity qualifications. Reigning over the gala homecoming festivities of 1956 were King Michael Bartholomew and Queen Susan Thode. The royal couple presided over the all- school pep rally, the football game, and the dance. Animated letters of K and S as well as a trumpet, trombone, and saxaphone were formations presented by the band during half time. In bright new Westem costumes the flag and baton twirlers also paraded on the field to make loyal hearts flutter and voices ring with true home- coming spirit. In spite of a 20-0 defeat at the hands of Rufus King, the crowd's never-say-die enthusiasm was continued at the dance the following evening as couples whirled around to the dreamy music of Chuck Howard and his band. U 'o Bang! the gun goes off and toes dig in as the cross-country team opened its '56 season with the Purgolders of Washington. Coach Joe Heineman faced the difficult task of rebuilding the squad with only two returning lettermen, Gary Nelson and Du- san Novakovic. In the City meet the dalers captured eighth place, and copped eleventh place in the State sectionals. Defeated by Washing- ton, East, and North, the Cardinals entered the win column by trouncing Tech. Edged by Pulaski, the Redman went on to take fifth place in the South Side sectionals. Ronald Able, Cy Gibas, Gary Nelson, and Dusan Novakovic earned major letters for their fine running. Minors were given to james Burd, John jozwowski, and Lee McDoniels. The team took third in the little city meet, sixth in the city relays, and eighth in the city meet. Taking individual honors in the little city meet were Ron Karow fourth, 50 yard free styleg Chuck Otter fifth, 200 yard free styleg and Frank Procopis fifth, diving. In the city meet Karow took fourth in the 50 yard free style, and Stan Niezgoda took third in the 150 yard individual medley. Of the major emblem winners only Karow and Dennis Forjan will return next year, but Coach Rojahn will have four minor emblem winners to bolster the 1958 squad. Get ready! Get set! Go! james Urbancic ex- hibits take off form in the important little city meet where the linmen took third place. COBLENTZ AWARD For their outstanding playmalcing and scholarship, Raymond Schultz and Allan Mahnke received the Coblentz Award jor the 1956-57 basketball sea- son. Raymond was also chosen on the SENTINEL all-cigz second team. City championships? They're here to stay! was the battle cry of the Cardinal basketball team in winning their fifth straight crown. In pre-season clashes South's hardwooders showed good potential but were nosed out by the Don Bosco five, 57-55. Then they squeezed a vic- tory of 77-75 from a stubborn Notre Dame quintet. In the city conference opener the Rasinske built machine began to roll when Bay View fell before the fast breaking Redbirds 78-57. The next unlucky quintet to crumble was Juneau, who was completely outplayed 62- 51. Then came the East five, who pulled some surprise punches, but were nosed out 79-78 in a real barriburner, and after that the Pulaski lads were slapped down 66-46. Rufus King also tried to pull an upset, but the Rasinske- men squeezed through 79-78. To put a blacksmudge on the Cards' record, the North Stars created havoc with South's offense in the first half of their game and went on to hand the title hungry five their only conference defeat, 62-60. After two easy victories over West and Custer, 84-53 and 87-79 respectively, the Cards cinched a title tie with King by pdunding home a 60-56 win over Tech. To take an undisputed championship the deadly locals slaughtered Lincoln 89-69. Going on to the sctional at Mukwanago, the Cardinals slaughtered Greendale 79-47, but were de- feated by Pulaski 62-6l, thus eliminating themselves from the state tournament. Editors boom orders only to get sharp answers, but it's all in good humor, and the deadlines are always met. BAND Raising of instruments, silence, and a sudden burst of music told South audiences that the smartly clad Cardinal band was on the job to bring pleasure at football games, Caperee, and honor day programs. Following the energetic baton of director Edward Terrill, the 65 musicians rehearsed daily for the city-wide tourna- ment and grade school concert. On various occasions band members formed their own en- sembles and played for the Vieau and Kagel grade schools and the Harvest Festival dance. These experiences gave them a chance to earn valuable service points. Rehearsing everything from pop-standards to long hair the orchestra presented its favorite selections at the annual Spring Concert in Coblentz hall. Dressed in fluffy pastel formals and smartly tailored suits, they made an extra effort to give parents and friends a gala evening of entertain- ment. With harmony in their hearts and melodies on their lips, silk-robed members of the A choir won smiles and encores at the Veterans' Day program and United Nations observance. Besides twirling at basketball and football games, the girls can also boast of strutting down Wisconsin avenue in the 1955 Christmas pa- rade. The iirst group of its kind in Wisconsin, they were recently featured in the rotogravure section of the MILWAUKEE JOURNAL. Organized by Mr. Robert Rose, former teacher at South, the group was introduced to the school at the Homecoming game in 1955. As regular as Old Faithful, the Twirlers, flashing red and white flags, livened up the boys' gym at 7:30 every morning to the strains of Oklahoma and Giant.', These early birds practiced catching their batons while others were catching up on sleep.
