“FOREWORD For more than lorty years the dome oi South Division has watched over the surrounding neighborhood. From beneath its shelter, tvventy-iive years ago, a small band oi eager students triumphantly hurried iorth, clutching a thin paper-bound pamphlet. Just a little bool4, dedicated to lVlr. l-larry E. Coblentz, it re- corded the activities oi the students and pictured the graduates. This vvas the First Cardinal Annual, published in 1912. Since that year the Cardinal Annual has grovvn vvith the school. Three hundred students have become tvventy-three hundred. The building has been enlarged several times, so that today vve have gymnasiums, music rooms, a library, and tvvo large assemblies. -l-hrough it all the great dome has beheld lour decades of ever-changing, never-ending progress at South Division. -l-hat stately dome has been a lamiliar landmarl4 on the South Side, ior the school has always been the center oi activity in the community. She has steadily encouraged the ideals and sustained the enterprises oi the citizens. ln the turbulent days oi the vvar she was loyal, ardent, and helpiul. -l-he return oi peace turned her energies to campaigns for charity, to entertainment ior pupils and parents, to civic projects, and to health programs. This year tvvo thousand eager students poured from the doors ol the old school, carrying a cloth-bound volume oi one-hundred Fifty pages. It vvas their bool4 oi pictures and oi memories, the 1937 Cardinal Annual, which through the years has spread the glory and the povver, the traditions and the aspirations of South Division.
