1988 Cougarama South Decatur High School R.R. 5 Box 277 Greensburg, IN 47240 rolume XX 1988 John 'Cougar' Mellencamp said it best in his hit song, Check It Out . This phrase was heard in the halls, sometimes said with amazement, always said with emphasis, and the yearbook staff caught on! When you finish the last page and yell to a friend, Hey come here and Check it out!’ , we will have succeeded. So, come along for the fun and the memories. Come on and ... OUT SENIORS Right: Chad, pick on someone your size. Far Right: Brad, we thought you had to pass the Shoe String Test before graduating Kindergarten, not high school!! Below: Don’t I look GOOOOOOD?“ Below Right: Renate s famous German smile. Upper Left: The Seniors chant — Let us OUT!!! Middle Left: Keith Sample applies the hearty handshake during Senior interviews, hoping to land a job at Scriptures. Below: Even at the State House, John IS the center of attention. SENIORS SENIORS Upper Left: This is not Star Search '88, An- gela and Jenny. Bottom Left: Murph on his turf. Middle: Isn't he a little old for you, Ang? Upper Right: We realue that school some- times feels like a prison, Greta and Renate, but isn't this going a bit too far? Bottom Right: Frenchie is keeping an eye on things. SENIORS Sfj Seniors 7 SENIORS SENIORS ✓ Class of ’88 Seniors this year had a lot to check out . It seems that 1988 was a happening kind of year for things coming and going. At South the number of credits needed to graduate went from 36 to 40. Students took their first ISTEP tests and some went to their first summer school because of it! There was a lot of stink raised over the half-doors in the girls' restrooms and over the State's requiring us to make up snow- days. Lots of good things excited the stu- dents too! We won the first sectional foot- ball playoff in the school's history. We brought the bucket back home after sev- eral years of being at North. A new fac- tory, which just might employ some sen- iors, finalized plans to build in Westport. In the world beyond South's doors ... speed limits were changed from I can't LET US NOT FORGET drive 55, to I can't drive 65,” on interstates. Many of us wondered what was really going on in the pulpits of American churches as many evangelists (a couple of Jimmy's — just to name a few names) were banned for their extra-curricular activities. New class officers were chosen. Presi- dent — Chris Collins, Vice-President — Dale Preston, Secretary — Greta Kissel, and Treasurer — Scott Pumphrey. As the seniors leave this year and enter this changing world, as John Cougar' Mellen- camp might say, Maybe they'll have a better understanding! 1988 — You have finally arrived!!! ... Class Colors — Cerise and Gold ... Class Motto — You must believe to achieve. . . . Class Flower — White rose tipped in hot pink ... Class Sponsors — Mr. Kissel, Mrs. McCormick, Mr. Layton, and Miss Bruns . .. Graduation — May 22, 1988!! ... Senior Night at King's Island ... and last ... Good Ol' South Deca- tur! Diligence at Homecom ing. 26 Juniors c BS o 2 Who will I take to the Prom?''; What do I care about class colors or a class motto? ; Who is Thoreau? Who care?” These were common questions heard near thejunior lockers this year. Thoughts of the black and red Midnight Masquer- ade Prom clouded the minds of most Juniors before the big night on April 30. Then the reality hit, Next year we'll be SENIORS! thus class colors and a class motto were selected. And, of course, Mrs. Tichenor's infamous American Literature class with Henry David Thoreau, along with Mr. Bohall’s (wonderful) vocabulary lists, were the highlight of our year. The class officers (who had the hard job of keeping the Juniors in line) were Pres. — Lora Reed; Sec. — Nic Adams; Vice Pres. — Rob Riddell; and Treas. — Eric Allen. M Sophomores SOPHOMORES The sophomore year is one of decision: final- izing schedules for the rest of their high school years, exploring colleges and career plans, and trying to find a way to stay in school and still have fun. The year was already rough but was becoming rougher by the unforseeable misfor- tune with their homecoming float. There were 2 lights at the end of this dark sophomore tunnel. One light was their 2nd place win in the hallway decorating contest with Porter and the Parting of the Sectional Seas , and the other light being that they are sophomores no longer!!!!! And like other years, many of the floats had a difficult time making it through the parade (some had unforseeable misfortune and had trouble making it to the parade) and they all had a trying time making it from Westport to the school for the halftime festivities. Even though we lost the game to Milan by seven points and it was cold and rainy, the night was exhilarating for many, especially Jenny Sims. Jenny, a Senior involved in Student Council, Yearbook, the school paper, and other activities, was crowned Homecoming Queen. The Junior class also had something to be excited about when their float, Let Victory Ring”, scooped up the 1st place trophy for the Best Homecoming Float entry. 48 at 1987 Homecoming Senior Attendant — Amber Hunter Escort — Rob Phelps Senior Attendant — Greta Kissel Escort — Chris Shuter Senior Attendant — Angela Oldham Escort — Brad Bryant 49 HOMECOMING 1987 CHECK IT OUT! It's a time for happiness because you've suc- ceeded at one of your main goals of life. You also are lucky that you don't have to go to school for what seems like three-hundred and sixty five days a year (unless you choose to go to college)! Graduation is a time for sadness because you'll miss your friends, teachers, pep sessions, convocations, and everything else that is high school. Golf is more than simply hitting a pretty white ball into a little, round hole. If you don't think it takes time and concentration and dedication, then try it yourself. Before you go to the golf course and make a fool out of yourself, borrow some OLD clubs and find an empty lot to test your driving ability. If you twist your back out of shape trying to make the cute, little white ball go further than ten feet, or if you find yourself digging a small reservoir because you keep hitting the ground rather than the ball, or if you find yourself thinking of ways to wrap the club around the base of a tree, then consider yourself a potential golfer because they’ve all been there. Imagine jumping up and over a bar that stands at six feet (that's taller than most people). Ask Jeff Idlewine about that feeling. The usual marching contests were attended this year, but with one addition: the regional contest in Bedford. This achievement came after the usual grueling band camp and night practices, and it is only the 2nd such title in the school's history — the first being in 1983. Other exciting trips were taken this year to various sights around the state. One such excursion was to Union Station in Indianapolis to perform in front of prestigious crowds. When the marching aspect of the year was over, the band moved inside for the concert season. Through Miss Melody Hunt we had a chance to experience a new beat and groove to new types of music. In her year-long stay with us, she brought such great hits as Sleigh Ride”. An Alabama Medley , and Rhythm of Life to the school and community. With her help many students received high rankings at contest, in- cluding a first by Matt Wright and a second by a Men's Ensemble consisting of Brad Beam, Chris McCullough, Marvin Wright, Matt Wright, James Hoffman, and Kenny Biddinger. These young men and women study elements of the agricultural phenomenon known as farming. They take their knowledge and put it to use in competitions. Some of the winning judging teams were the Poultry team, the Livestock team, the Dairy team, and the Forestry team. For example, these people took charge of morning announcements and made sure everyone's day was started in the right way! Also the Council members livened up the day by sponsoring many convocations — several were even interesting! As tradition would have it, the members traveled to another school for a day to take notes' on the system. This year instead of traveling to North De- catur, the trip was to Columbus North. The major event of the Council's year came late fall, just before the winter snows hit: the painting of the paws. Everyone rallied together to make a path up the sidewalk leading into the Cougar's Den. Dreams were shattered, though, when the rains, snows and feet wore off some of the paint within a short time. Overall, the year was one of action and fun. So check out the Student Council. Group picture (left to right) 1st row — C. Shuter, J. Sims. G. Kissel, S. Ogle. K. Steinker; 2nd row — L. Hughes, R. Some of the improvements were having their own locker, having more free- dom and not having to endure 'Clean Plate Week”. However, seventh grade is not a bed of roses. They get picked on by seniors, run over in the hallways, and their lockers slammed in their faces. So, as you can see, seventh grade is not all fun and games. You have to be at all of the games (in uniform) AND you have to be in a peppy mood. That doesn't sound hard but have you ever had a day when you just felt like staying home and not going to a game to scream you're head off? Add to that homework five maybe six days a week plus practicing cheers after school. Even though it’s hard, the girls have fun. They have an opportunity to meet people from other schools. They also have a chance to see what other schools look like. As a cheerleader you get to make everyone else peppy, too. 144 ADMINISTRATION ( Principally” Speaking) Faculty 147 Len Lawrence Assistant Principal - Athletic Director OFFICE AND GUIDANCE (the Real BOSSES) Jayne Gault.
