A FAIRY TALE” HOMECOMING It was a Fairy Tale evening for Aimee AmRhein as she was crowned queen at South Decatur's traditional Home- coming on October 10. The traditional pep session on Friday afternoon was followed by the parade in Westport with the band and Cougarettes. South’s football team had an exciting game against the Brown County Eagles, al- though the Cougars were defeated 25-14 by the Eagles. During the halftime, the spectators were entertained with the crowning of Aimee, escorted by Larry Kroger, and the parade of floats. The theme for the 1986 Home- coming was Fairy Tales . First place went to the Fresh- man float Four and Twenty 'Eagles' Baked in a Pie”. Second place went to the Sophomores with Ole King ’Cougar ' (The other classes consisted of Three Blind Eagles” by the seventh grade, Humpty Dumpty by the eighth grade, Sing a Song of Six Pence by juniors, and Old Woman in a Shoe by seniors). The FFA float's theme was Old McDonald . There were also floats from the Cheerleaders and the Baptist Youth Center. A dance ended the Homecoming celebration for another year. i 1. Well if you thought Mrs. McCor- mick and the Cougar Cheerleaders, then you are correct! These young ladies also supported and cheered at every football and basketball game. Last year the cheerleaders worked at the Opti- mist Booth at the Decatur Co. 4-H Fair as a fund project. In the summer, the 8th grade through the 12th grade girls attended cheerleading camp at DePauw University. The training really paid off, since the Varsity and 9th grade squads en- tered a state competition at Southport H.S. and received third place trophies. During the Fall Sports Banquet, each girl received a certificate and a red rose. Angela Oldham, Jenny Sims, and Aimee AmRhein each received a jacket. A spe- cial recognition goes to the cheerleaders' spon- sor, Mrs. McCormick, and to South's Cougar, Kenny Biddinger, who also worked at games and pep sessions. Though small in number, the group was requested to show their accomplished stature through several events which were seen by a great number of people in both state and national settings. June of '86 took the band to Florida with perfor- mances at Walt Disney World, Sea World, Ken- nedy Space Center, and Wet and Wild. In the fall, there were football games, band camp, and marching contests. Later there were some new experiences. They made their stage debut in No- vember at the Indiana Reperatory Theatre and at Union Station in Indianapolis. The pep band also achieved professional status by performing at an Indiana Pacer game at Market Square Arena. Other events included the band banquet, a skat- ing party, and many more performances: West- port Barbecue, the Christmas Concert, County Music Festival, every basketball game, Com- mencement, and the terrific Musicale. COUGARETTES If you do not know any of the Cougarettes, you would never begin to understand all the time and hard work these girls put forth. Their efforts do not begin in the fall, but at the beginning of summer when they must attend two camps: dance and band. After school begins, they practice everyday for one period as well as many after school and night rehearsals. This year all that work paid off. They performed at every home football and basketball game, and they held workshops for the elementary and Jr. High students. When they traveled to Spencer for the Indiana State Music Association Contest, they brought home a Division I rating. Besides all that, they performed at Indi- ana Reperatory Theatre, Union Station, Charlestown Marching Contest, the District Contest, and many other events with the band. They also found time to have a bake sale. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Fry, Sponsor and Amy Hoke and Tricia Krzyzanowski, Captains, and of course to the girls for one of the best squads ever. Wendy Taylor received a special plaque during Commencement for perfect attendance during her entire school career. Our Senior Class certainly came a long way. From the first day of school in first grade to no recess in the 7th grade, we then learned how to open our lockers, ask dad for the car keys for that special Saturday night, and to pick on the 7th graders when we became Seniors. Finally on May 31st, 82 of us proudly walked down the aisle and held what took 12 loooong years to receive, The Diploma . For our Commencement we chose as our motto, “Great visions often begin with small dreams. , and we chose the traditional school colors of maroon and white as our class colors as well. We also chose the maroon and white carnation as the class flower. We also enjoyed writing our Senior wills and voting in the Senior Poll. Here are some of our Senior Favorites: The Flintstones (Cartoon), Corvette (car), pizza (food), Tom Cruise (actor), Cybill Shepard (actress), Alabama (band), Talk Dirty to Me (song), pink (color), Garfield (comic strip), Whitney Houston (singer), Cosby Show (series). Top Gun (movie), Greens- burg (place), and Big Red (drink). Our favorite teacher was Mr. Hileman. The Best All Around Seniors were Wendy Taylor and Fred Low, but Aimee AmRhein and Todd Hershauer were chosen Top Senior Boy and Girl . We built a Three Blind Eagles float for our fairy tale with representativies Julie LeMasters and Matt Grimes. We chose Hardees for our fast food with great results. Our proudest moment came after receiving a 2nd place with 600 points in the Spirit Point Contest, which was due to our fantastic cheers at pep sesssions. The Cougar Staff' begins with the central office, the corporation administrators, and the school board. Next comes the personnel in the actual school building, beginning with everyone's favorite place, “the office . This consists of the administrators, the guidance people, hard working secretaries, and the school nurse. The faculty and assistants work many long hours to provide the best instruction and interaction with the student body. The cafeteria, bus, and custodial staffs also provide invaluable services to the school. There are also many students who aid these adults so that South Decatur can function effectively. It has been a long and arduous road, albeit a challenging and rewarding one to produce this year's Cougarama . Many hours have gone into this publication in order that everyone might have some lasting memories. Of course no book of this size can ever be done alone. I first wish to express my gratitude to my staff for all the hard work that they accomplished dur- ing the school year without an editor. As they know, there were many hours of drawing layouts, writing copy, taking pictures, typing, selling ads, and running errands. I also wish to thank Mr. Duncan and MOST of the faculty for all their cooperation during the year. For all the fantastic yearbook photos, I sincerely thank Phil Allen and Cameo Color as well as Mr. Whitaker, Mr. Renfro, Mr. Hickey, Chad Buchanan, Lisa Kirtman, and Jason Overmyer for a job well done. A special thank you goes to Mrs. Tichenor and her newspaper staff for ail their work on some super layouts. I also wish to express my deepest gratitude to Kip Stewart of Herff Jones and to my sister. Natalie Tanner, for all their long hours of work this summer when the staff was not able to help. Now, as I leave the Cougarama'' in Mrs. Tichenor’s capable hands, I wish to say a sincere thank you to you for allowing me to serve as your sponsor for four Cougaramas . I hope you enjoy our creative efforts! ) Row 1—Erin Henderson, Stacey Schoettmer, Mindy Nobbe, Julie Miller, Tricia Krzyzanowski, Lora Reed Row 2—Beth Cann, Mr. Tanner (Sponsor), Gabe Graue, Stephanie Phelps, Michelle Smith, Scott Pumphrey, Tina Harrison, Christie Campbell Do you want to run an errand, Mindy?'
