There was the traditional pep session on Friday afternoon and the parade in Westport with the band and Cougarettes South's football team had an exciting game against Milan. During half- time, the spectators were entertained with the parade of floats. First place went to the juniors with the float War Games. Second place and the President's Award went to the seniors whose theme was Jaws. The sophomores won third with the theme Breathless. Spirit week consisted of three events: one dress-up day, the class cheers, and the class pyramids. The dress-up day was titled, Repeat Day . During the pep session, the juniors won the class cheer, with the 7th Grade coming in second and 8th Grade coming in third. The pyramid competition was won by the juniors with the freshmen pyramid in second. That evening South played Greensburg in the Sec- tional. SECTIONAL SPIRIT SHORT 1. In the fall, we pre- sented The Pink Panther Strikes Again.” In this comedy, the bumbling, stumbling Clouseau, played by Mark Sturdivant, tripped past everything the archvillian Paul Dreyfus, played by Kevin Mucker- heide, could think of. The spring play was a farce called “The Worst High School Play in the World in which Prince Ivanha, played by Mark, is abandoned in the woods and raised by squirrels (that’s right, squirrels). He re- turns to 'the world of men,’ is educated by Friar Fred, played by Ken Reed, and sets out to reclaim his rightful heir to the throne. NHS INDUCTS THIRTEEN Potential National Honor Society members must be strong in charac- ter, leadership, scholarship, and service qualities and must have main- tained a 3.25 grade point average since the freshman year. Those meeting those requirments then are voted upon by the faculty of South Decatur. This year there were thirteen such students who met these requirements and were felt by the faculty to deserve the honor of being in the NHS. Hopefully, this organization will encourage others to strive for excellence. 16 17 SENIORS WIN FUNFEST The Student Council Spirit Com- mittee sponsored a Funfest again this year. Many of the events were the same as last year, such as a tug-of-war, obstacle race, and Volkswagon push. Funfest '84 also included some new events to test the skills of each class’ competi- tion representative. The senior class took the honor of winning the 1984 Funfest for the day, even though the junior class won the Spirit Year” contest. 1. Annette, what are you sittin in? 2. Don't act so shocked guys! Like so many students in the past, 1984 seniors were ready to move toward their future and “freedom.” Six years of high school were finally over. However, along with not going to class everyday, they also won't see their friends on the daily basis they have become accustomed to. Along with Dr. Day, speakers at this year’s commencement excercise includ- ed Frank Schutte, Valedictorian, and Pam Brewer, Salutatorian. In 1984, South Decatur graduated 101 students. There have been good times and bad, but we are now preparing to move on. Sen- ior year is a busy one. Students choose colleges, plan parties, and go to all the school activities they can for one more time as students. One major accomplish- ment of the class was made by one of its members— Frank Schutte, class valedictorian, was accepted to West Point Academy. The class will also never forget that 1984 was the year that we finally got rid of our reputation of being the worst class. There are many people to remember from the class. 1984 Senior class officers were Darren Evans, president; Danny Richards, vice-president; Kim Badgley, secretary; and Julie Oliphant, treasurer. Kelly Bradley was elected as one of the only Student Council presidents to be female. The senior class was represented by Kelly Bradley and her escort, Eric Mann, at homecoming and was represented at the Junior-Senior Prom at Otter Creek by Vernita Atch- ley and Danny Richards. The class' chosen colors are Dusty Rose and Antique White and its flower is the Sweetheart Rose. May the experience we have gained not be lost, but be planted as the seed of success for our future was chosen as the class' motto. As we go out on our own, we would like to say one final farewell to South Decatur and to thank all of the teachers who made our high school years, years of growth, and especially our sponsor, Mr. Mulroney. 80 Gretchen AmRhein Neil Anderson Todd Beesley Jeff Akemon Vernita Atchley Maria Bell Pat Alexander Kim Badgley Nancy Benge 81 Charles Biddinger Jon Bradshaw Pam Brewer Mike Blauvelt Wesley Bradshaw Jennifer Brodie Kelly Bradley Delana Brewer Leigh Ann Carson r 82 83 Michelle Dixon Randy Duerstock Marie Edmondson Kathy Elliott Darren Evans Robbie Ewing Beth Ferris Amy Fetterman Kim Floyd 84 Lisa Gaither Pat Grote Karen Hardebeck Paula Gant John Hagerty Ronnie Hardebeck Robin Garrity Belva Hahn Sheila Hawkins David Herbert Tim Hollin John Hull Lotus Herbert Kim Homann Olivia Isenberg Marsha Hitchell Robyn Huff Jean Johannigman 86 Daryl Koors Sandy Lowe Eric Mann Kathy Lewis Darin Maddux Matt Mobley Kim Lewis Michelle Maggard-Danforth Wendy Moffett 87 David Morrow Richard Niese Julie Oliphant Larry McCullough Shawn Ogle Bill Powers Willie McCullough Paula Oliger Scott Ralston 88 Ed Renfro Paula Ronsheim Tim Schoettmer Danny Richards Richard Ryle Frank Schutte Dwayne Rogers David Schoettmer Brenda Schwering 89 Sharon Schwermg Beth Shields Dory Shrader Jennifer Shepherd Annette Shireman Maria Studler Jody Shera Eric Smead Mark Sturdivant 90 Dana Sullivan Dan Teitsort Dianna Wood Tracy Vannatta Andrea Waters Tony Weber Wayne Wiley Greg Vanderbur Jay Wright 91 Kathy Young Not pictured: Bill Barkdull Marty Wright 1. Major wins were for Best Float at Homecoming, the class pyramid and the class yell. To raise money for the prom the juniors got to work and made $10,500 by selling magazines. Should I and can I further my education or should I go into a vocational field? Countless other questions arrive as the sophomores take their sec- ond step of high school and realize their magic year of '86 is but a short two steps away. This year's class officers were Isi Dust, president; Melinda Cooper, vice-president; and Christy Gault, secretary trea- surer. The class sponsor was Mr. Norman Layton. This being our first year in high school, everyone enjoyed having a choice of classes, such as: algebra, science, foreign language, English, and agriculture. Another exciting occurrence was the arrival of our class rings. During Homecoming the Freshmen class built a float with the theme '■Superman. Our representatives were Ai- mee AmRhein and Todd Hershauer. During Basketball season we won first place in the Spirit Can competition. We received sec- ond place for our pyramid. The freshmen of- ficers were Darryl Floyd, president: Steve Horan, vice-president: Todd Hershauer, sec- retary: and David Padgett, treasurer. We would like to thank our sponsor. It is one of the smallest in the past four years, but what we lacked in quantity, we made up in quality. Most staff members did their best and, even persuaded some non-staff members to help.
