Who would have guessed ten years ago how the country has changed? Who knows how it will be ten years from now? With traditional American values once again sweeping the nation, we hope to keep up our standard of liv- ing while inflation raises prices, jobs are hard to find, and a feeling of de- spair is in the air. There are brights things in the eighties too. This is the era of new- wave music, “Preppy” clothes, and fuel-efficient cars! 1. Mr. McIntyre and Mr. Layton relax in the lounge. 2. Mr. Michael helped arrange the ping-pong tournament. Friends and Good Times We had good friends and good times as we entered the eighties. In the fall we went to football games, the homecoming, the Grand Prix, and had end of sea- son picnics and weiner roasts. We worked on the floats for the homecoming parade and we dressed up for the photographer who took our pictures for the yearbook. We went to movies at theatres with our boyfriends and girl- friends and we even saw one here — Animal Crackers. 4 1. Susan and Kelly work on a community pro- ject—their homework! 2. Greg Cramer booted the ball for the extra point. The Cou- gars led 7-6! The Cougars led at the half 14-6. After a few bad breaks the Eagles won 24-14. At halftime, there were floats, class representa- tives, and the queen candidates and their escorts. The crowd anxiously waited for the crowning. “And the winner is, said Rita Hitchell, “Carol Hamilton. J.R. Stuart crowned Carol and made her the official 1980 Homecoming Queen. 1. During the float competition, the class of '82 took first prize with “Cougars Looking Good.” 10 11 Juniors and Seniors The junior and senior class along with their dates, and the administration enjoyed Sharing the Night Together on May 16, 1981. This year’s junior-senior prom was held at the Ramada Inn in Brown County. The colors used for the prom were dark green and mint green. A buffet meal was the first main event on the agenda. This consisted of shrimp and or roast beef as the two main dishes. After the meal was served and everyone finished eating, the mu- sic began. The Sweetwater” band provided music for the stu- dents and others to dance to. Suddenly, the music stopped. The big moment was here. Eric Lister and Laura Mann were crowned as the 1981 Prom King and Queen. 12 Share the Night Together 6 1. Suzie Lewis and Eric Lister await the big moment. 2. Stu- art, president; Jane Moore, vice- president; Sharon Schenk, secre- tary; and Mark Sturdivant, treasurer. Donna Combs later re- placed Miss Schenk. 17 Sports Cheerleaders ‘Fired-Up’ and Ready The South Decatur cheerleaders have worked long and hard for the Cougars from all levels. The cheer- leaders from seventh grade to twelfth grade have yelled until their throats ran dry, stomped all over in back-aching stunts, and jumped up and down until their springs broke. The ball players have much to be thankful for in these girls. They stayed late after school and worked for perfection. Their reward—fans yelling in the stands at the ball games. Top, l-r: Susan Elliott, Jennie Wills, Kim Shera, Tammy Huber, and Terry Yeager are the varsity cheerleaders. Right, counter- clockwise from bottom: Debbie Padgett, Ro- byn Huff, Julie Oliphant, and Jennifer Billieu are the reserve cheerleaders. 19 More Cheerleaders Being a cheerleader means you have guts. You have guts enough to get in front of a crowd and show your support when nobody else is; guts enough to stand in front of your classmates and yell when they won't. We should thank our yellleaders for the fine job they do. 1. Freshmen cheerleaders: Lauri Cunningham. Kim Lewis, Kathy Elliott, and Beth Shields. Yell your heart out Susan. 3. Go get 'em, Cougars!!! 4 Who said that? 20 VARSITY FOOTBALL 2. 3. Varsity Cougar football fin- ished their season of 1980 1—9. The best game of the season was against North Decatur. It was the highlight of the season because the team played to its potential reported Coach De- Bord. This year Tony Arnett won Most Valuable Defensive Back, MV Back and MV Player. The win came over Tri- ton Central. Several members of the re- serve team also played on the varsity team gaining valuable ex- perience for next season. The reserve foot- ball team 7. 23 VARSITY SPIKERS 12—3 Finishing the season with a 12-3 record, best ever for South, the varsity volleyball team was the conference champ for the second year in a row. The lady Cougars have not lost a conference game in the past fourteen played. Highlights of the season included beating North Decatur 15-0, 15-0 and who can forget the breathtaking Greensburg game? Freshmen volleyball ended with a 6-1 record. Since Miss Bruns also coached the Reserve and Varsity, the freshmen team worked on their own much of the time. Every girl who has played freshmen volleyball knows that going into the corner and bumping the ball all during practice can be pretty boring. Al- though the team finished with a 6-14 record (3-4 in the conference), they did just that. The Cougars were al- ways within inches of victory, with fate sometimes against them. All the games were close, except for the one with the North Decatur Chargers. Even though the team worked hard in practice, it also had fun. The players went to a Pacer game and saw an Indiana University practice and game. Also a Free-Throw- Athon was held to help raise mon- ey for the athletic department. 1. The Band has worked hard to accomplish what they have earned. Band Camp starts off a long year of hard work fol- lowed by night practices and practices during 6th period. Hours of marching are needed. The band works hard on their playing too. When not marching, they are inside playing. This year the Band has much to show for their hard work. They're going to Walt Disney World in Florida. They’ll march through the streets of Disney World where people from all over the country will be watching. The band has done a great job and we should be very proud of them. 48 Club Liven Spirit r. 1. J. Moore. K. Homann. J. Stone. C. Murray. D. Oliver. K. Lewis. T. Staggs. C. Hamilton, r. 2. K. Bradley. They ate at the Ra- mada Inn and then went shopping in downtown Nash- ville. The spring project was the Mother-Daughter Tea. The senior girls were honored. 52 F.F.A. Visits Kansas City One of the most active clubs here at South Decatur is the Future Farmers of America. Each year the club offi- cers go to both State and national conventions held at Purdue and Kansas City, Missouri. They have also done some typing for Mrs. Reynolds and helped her out with the orientations. So the Library aids aren’t just students who sit around watching all of us get lost. The cooks and the kitchen workers don’t have it too simple either. They went through many adjustments in the cafeteria just as we did. They were the ones who cleaned up the messes which were made on the floor and the tables. 1. Library workers: r. 1 J. Colson. S. Poole, K. Tichenor. r.2 R. Grimes, M. McCoulIgh, S. We know that from the first day we step on to that big school bus and find that it is always the little guy who gets the edge of the seat. Then the dream comes, If only we were seniors.”. Then that day finally arrives and with it comes a flock of choices and decisions. Now after all that waiting and wishing, we find that we are still at heart the same kids that climbed onto the school bus that first day. Now we must go out into this uncertain world and make re- spectable lives for ourselves. The job market is unstable, but we can do it if we try. Others of us will be headed for the college life. The class of '81 has had its good times with its bad. Remember how worried we all got when the draft was talked about? Then there was the problem of learning how to han- dle a teacher. We were always re- minded about our lack of spirit, and in fact, we never won a spirit award at South. We did contribute some excellent athletes though. Our good times outnumbered our bad. We excelled in putting on the prom as juniors. Everyone got in on the action. And don’t forget the girls’ volleyball team that taught Greensburg a much needed lesson. Some say it’s the hardest year. Some say it’s the easiest. No matter how we look back on it, we entered the eighties as adults. And because of our education, we shall enter the of ’81 world with endless possibilities open to us. The Sophomores put much time and effort into the spirit day contest and it really paid off! Many of us stayed after to help with hall decorations, the skit, and the pyramid. We also had many people dress accordingly for dress-up days. Winning the contest gave us an hour and a half lunch break one day in May. Some of us found out that driver-ed wasn’t as easy as we thought, although most of us had fun driving. There were no serious problems and most of us were even able to get our licenses. As we go on through our lives we can bring back memories of the good times of our sophomore year. We picked them out ourselves. When we got them back, they weren’t quite what we ex- pected. This year we also picked our classes for the first year. Some of them were easy, and others were too much to handle. People who had a study hall never had anything to do in it, and people who didn’t have one never had time to do their work in class. We also had lockers to ourselves. For some people it was nice, but for others it was just as messy and as crowded as it was last year with two people.
