South Decatur's first year brought about the formation of many clubs, especially created to provide entertainment for each and every student at SDHS. But one club at South was not designed for fun and entertainment. This was the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is an organization which was created to recognize those students who have done above average work academically in high school. Early in the school year, Burney’s Chapter of the Na- tional Honor Society was transferred to South Decatur. On December 13, ten members were inducted into South’s first NHS. In order to become a member, a student must be either a senior or a junior, must have a 3.25 grade aver- age on a 4.00 basis for all years in high school, and must pass the requirements established by the faculty on the qualities of character, leadership, scholarship, and service. Those students who had previously been members of Burney’s Chapter and now South Decatur’s are: Kay Miers, Melody Parker, Nancy Cox, Tom Parker, Trevor Einhaus, and Denise Rcasoner. The new inductees arc: Melanie Cru- ser, Diane Fry, Jim Busse, Ken Bass, Bonnie Tomlinson, La Donna Bedel, Patty Hermesch, Marva Lynn Evans, Steve Beatty, and Steve Gatewood. Mrs. Randall Ervin is the SDHS sponsor. The NHS officers were elected January 27. They are: President Denise Reasoner, Vice-President Ken Bass, Sec- retary Kay Miers, and Treasurer Melanie Cruser. Early this spring, another induction was held to install those sophomores who had also met the requirements of character, leadership, scholarship, and service. South De- catur is surely proud of their wearers of the golden torch the symbol of responsibility and honor. NHS Parents stand proudly as Mr. Graber offers congratulatory remarks. Stands Out Nancy Cox, Trevor Einhaus, Toni Parker, Denise Reasoner, Kay Miers, and Mrs. Randall Ervin look on as Melody Parker describes the qualifications of an NHS member at South’s first induction. Hours at SDHS are often spent in the library. The NHS members will agree to this. A highlight for any new NHS member is hav- ing his Mother pin the golden torch on him. Just ask Mel. Did you make the honor roll, Steve? Oh, no, a B!! Lessons are just TOO much as Ken, Jim, and Melanie prove! 29
