Today a new crop from this same fertile setting— A completely new product, but the process the same. Once a dream—South Decatur Reality now. For minutes, hours, days A cadence of years. The continual groping. Grasping and changing. The process continues. Traditions evolve as the land had before us. Common lands broken and loyalties challenged. But the sowing, the growing, the reaping continues. We record the past and salute the future. To the years of South Decatuj In the Beginning South Decatur High School’s first student council was a composite of three schools gathered together to set the standards, colors, and nickname for their new school. Their first meeting was in May of 1968, at which time Cougars became the name and MAROON and WHITE became the colors. This council has since been enlarged and functions as a interim council to meet any need which might arise. The members as pictured are: Seated: D. Reasoner, K. Frieders- dorf, M. Con well, J. Stier, M. Redelman. G. Biddinger, J. Campbell. Standing: T. Einhaus, J. Emily, Mr. Hickey, T. Best, S. Reed, M. A nine-year- old dream became a reality in Decatur County on Sunday, October 27, 1968, when the spacious new $1.7 million South Decatur School was dedicated on its beautiful landscaped 40-acre site on the west side of Indiana 3, midway between Letts and Westport. An estimated 2,000 persons shared in the memorable occasion marking the completion of a new era in education for the youth of Decatur County. The dedication and open house, which followed, were high-lighted by the presence of Richard D. Wells, Superintendent of Public Instruction for the state of Indiana; Roger Anderson, Superintendent of Decatur County Schools; and members of the School Board. South Decatur High School, a consolidation of Sandcreek, Jackson, and Bur- ney High Schools, maintains the most modern of facilities and assembles an estimated 700 students. This school, which began in the grass roots of a 40-acre field, now houses the future of tomorrow. 9 Student Life South Decatur It is significant that of our pas- times, study is by far the most impor- tant. We study five days a week, six hours a day. We read; we take notes; we memorize; and we study. Despite the tendency of other activites to split us into groups of opposing interests, study unites us a common denominator. WS. Prepares Aeademically Vocational Education The vocational classes at South Decatur help the stu- dents to prepare for their fu- ture. Students now have the op- portunity to work with actual machines. This is a great advan- tage as many of the students have had no such previous ex- perience. The home economics rooms are equipped with the latest in new equipment includ- ing a furnished one-room apart- ment, and the shop has wood- working and metal depart- ments. M SDHS Mathematics The Math department under, the guidance of Mr. B. K. Bedford offers courses in General Math, Algebra I, Algebra 11, Geometry, Trigonometry and Analytical Geometry. South Decatur Math students made us very proud in their showing in the State Math Contest. The Leaders of Today and Tomorrow Class Officers Larry Gault, Ken Bass, Kathy Davis, and Sarah Ed- dleman. Karen Friedersdorf, Alice Ann Phelps, Larry Smith, and Robert Witkemper. A World of Books New furnishings, along with a li- brary containing approximately four thousand books, made the li- brary an interesting place to study. Whether searching for fiction or refe- rence books, stu- dents always re- ceived willing assis- tance from our li- brarians under the leadership of Miss Diane Gulley. 16 Front Row: Marjorie Wiley, Mary Witkemper. Activities a n d Organizations Our life at South Decatur is a jigsaw of interlocking pieces which creates a picture of friendship, leadership, and scholarship. Though concentrating our time mainly on scholarship, we seek a diversion from books. At the end of the day we rush to our various clubs and organizations. We seek a retreat in rehears- als for school plays, beating a deadline, or enjoying our various clubs. At South Decatur we are striving to become complete, well-rounded persons. We justify delaying study-time in favor of extra-curricular activities in these activities be- cause they will expand our practical knowledge. Bottom Row: Barbara Ball. Connie Low. Cathy Dale. I shall try to fit myself to give intelligent service in making my community a safer and more beautiful place in which to live. Thus will my own life become rich and complete.” The Sunshine Society has done such good deeds as make and send favors to the people in nursing homes and provide baskets for the needy at Christmas. The two social events of the year were a Sweetheart Dance and an Ideal Ladies Banquet. Mrs. Capper and Mrs. Parker sponsored the Sunshine Society this year. 26 The newly elected Sunshine officers are: Treasurer Mary Jeanne Witkemper; Reporter Linda Glasson;Pres- ident Kathy Davis; Vice-President Janet Stier; Secretary, Paulina Schreiner. After lighting their candles, the new Sunshine girls finally realize their responsibilities. South Decatur's first year brought about the formation of many clubs, especially created to provide entertainment for each and every student at SDHS. But one club at South was not designed for fun and entertainment. This was the National Honor Society. The National Honor Society is an organization which was created to recognize those students who have done above average work academically in high school. Early in the school year, Burney’s Chapter of the Na- tional Honor Society was transferred to South Decatur. On December 13, ten members were inducted into South’s first NHS. In order to become a member, a student must be either a senior or a junior, must have a 3.25 grade aver- age on a 4.00 basis for all years in high school, and must pass the requirements established by the faculty on the qualities of character, leadership, scholarship, and service. Those students who had previously been members of Burney’s Chapter and now South Decatur’s are: Kay Miers, Melody Parker, Nancy Cox, Tom Parker, Trevor Einhaus, and Denise Rcasoner. The new inductees arc: Melanie Cru- ser, Diane Fry, Jim Busse, Ken Bass, Bonnie Tomlinson, La Donna Bedel, Patty Hermesch, Marva Lynn Evans, Steve Beatty, and Steve Gatewood. Mrs. Randall Ervin is the SDHS sponsor. The NHS officers were elected January 27. They are: President Denise Reasoner, Vice-President Ken Bass, Sec- retary Kay Miers, and Treasurer Melanie Cruser. Early this spring, another induction was held to install those sophomores who had also met the requirements of character, leadership, scholarship, and service. South De- catur is surely proud of their wearers of the golden torch the symbol of responsibility and honor. NHS Parents stand proudly as Mr. Graber offers congratulatory remarks. Hours at SDHS are often spent in the library. The NHS members will agree to this. A highlight for any new NHS member is hav- ing his Mother pin the golden torch on him. Just ask Mel. Did you make the honor roll, Steve? Oh, no, a B!! Lessons are just TOO much as Ken, Jim, and Melanie prove! 29 French and Spanish Clubs Popular Organizations SWINGING WITH SPANISH Hola csrudiantes! Como estas? Spanish is a wonderful language and an interesting one. Many Spanish students enjoy the Spanish Club. The club meets once a month and has many exciting activities. They have had a Christmas party Spanish style, and have taken a Spanish trip. They make things concerning Spain. Mexico, and other Spanish speaking countries. They have an all ‘round Spanish good time. Adios. Hasta luego. “PARLONS FRANCAIS” French, another wonderful language, gives many joys to the French Club. The club has enjoyed interesting slides on France, a Christmas par- ty French style, where they sang and danced in keeping with the French custom, a Mardi Gras Celebration, and the highlight of the year was eating dinner in a French restaurant. ‘A tout ‘a 1’ heure. Science and History Clubs at SDHS One of the many clubs organized this year is the Science Club, sponsored by Mr. Sutton. Mr. Kidd, and Mr. McIntyre. Its purpose is to promote interest in science careers and individual project work. The students learn requirements for college entrance in the field of science and gain an insight into what the colleges will expect of them. The purpose of the History Club is to help inform people about the background and development of the area in which they live. This year the club has enjoyed many activities such as our trip to Vincennes and the hunting of cemetery records for the state. Future Teachers of America The FTA holds the attention of teachers-to-be of SDHS. The Future Teachers Association, under the the direction of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hensley, offers helpful, enlightening information to students about the “hows and whys” of teaching. During the year the members have had guest speakers including Mr. Gardner, the school guidance counselor, who gave information on “How to Become a Teacher”. At many of the regular meetings the members have discussed actual situations from teaching. The members are as follows: Front Row: Sara Eddelman, Elneeta Able, Nancy Cox, Debra Michael, Donnie Low. Second Row: Mrs. Joyce Hensley. Joyce Powers. Diane Fry. Connie Low. Mr. Glen Hensley. Top Row: Kathy Venters, Marva Evans. Alice Phelps, Linda Stephens. South Decatur, which participates in the Mid-Hoosier Conference, began practicing its summer baseball team. The baseball team was under the direction of Coach Ted Stewart. The boys and Coach Stewart had a commendable season. Steve Reed, an outstanding outfielder, was selected for the All-Conference Team. Coach Steve Mickiff, who plays offen- sive center for the Indianapolis Capitals. Football was a completely new game for both team and fans at South De- catur. Building ground roots, Coach Midkiff started with a team of 7th and 8th grade boys. These boys were eager and Coach Midkiff made use of every ounce of enthusiasm. The result was a nearly perfect season. The fans saw their team defeated only once and that was by big and experienced Jennings County. Spring practice has started in preparation for a Freshman team and a Junior High team next fall. 49 TOUCH DOWN BOUND.” South Decatur’s The members of the cross country team are as follows: Front Row: Jim Hagerty, Steve Cox, Terry Ha- ley, Pat O’Haver. Their two class ring designs brought diversity to South De- catur. Eight months of hard work collec- ting old scrap paper and selling a record number of magazines ended with the de- tailed plans for “the best prom-ever.” It seemed that school took the back seat to extra curricular activities, but time was well spent in the chemistry lab, in English classes and even in study hall.
