Their efforts, and the building itself are testimony to community commitment. The South Dearborn Community Schools Cor- poration is comprised of the communities of Aurora, Dillsboro, Manchester, and Moor- es Hill. Each community sends to the high school individual needs, but shares a com- mon goal of quality education. The coming together of the young people in the new school enhances that quality education, and provides for each student a more diverse and valuable social and per- sonal experience. Each community benefits from this kind of education. Every student is better prepared to return to the commu- nity, or go beyond the hometown as a more adequately prepared citizen, a more tho- roughly experienced person. The need for a multi-community high school was felt in each community for years. Detailed planning for and designing of the building began in 1975. Groundbre- aking and construction started in early 1976, and the building was ready for occu- pancy in August, 1978. The new building, and the staff who have accepted the challenge of meeting the edu- cational needs of the students who will learn there, are proof that communities can come together with success. It is the tenth year anniversary for South Dearborn High School and the yearbook staff would like to dedicate this year’s an- nual theme to this very special occasion in the short life of the consolidation. In the ten years the school has prospered to be one of the best educational instituti- ons in the State of Indiana and will, without a doubt, continue in the positive direction that has been established in the early deca- de of growth. 3 ■4 4 6. - Seniors strut their stuff. 7. - Leslie's smile looks a little crooked. 8. - Doug, we said a girl, not a gourd!! 9. - Reid, what are you thinking?! 10. - Clint and Chris suffer from the side effects of school food. 11. - Jeanne always did fall all over Pat!! 12 - Anna even steals sweatshirts trying to get a 5-star rating. 1. - The ever paranoid frshmen. 2. - The three stooges honorary fan club prepare to take the floor. 3. - Another spectacular performance by the big Red. But as we all know there has to be a chain of command and there has to be the ultimate boss, the first link in the chain. The school board is pictured above and they are as follows: Larry Petty, Bob Ferhman, Joan Zoller, Ken Cleeter, Joan Fehling, Bob Fogle, and Mike Cheek. The central office staff are as follows: Ms. Mills, Ms. Kern, Ms. Glenn, and Ms. Henke. Also pictured at left seated: Assistant Superintendent Dave Glenn, Superin- tendent Greg Platt, and Business Man- ager William Naylor. 21 S.D’s Command Central Top Left: Principal-Marvin Duerstock Above: Associate Principal-Don Coates Top Right: Athlete Director-Bill Slayback Above Right: Assistant Principal Marlene Dcmmurc Right: Guidance Department: Gene Cleary, Pat Turner, and Steve Mcndcll. 22 Secretaries We Deliver The school would be hard pressed to operate with out the all important secretaries. These three ladies (pictured at left - Jean Sneed. Brenda Walton, Shir- ley Geisler, and Vernida Wendlcman) do much more than the regular duties that one might think a secretary docs. They monitor, aid the students, maintain the attendance records, answer the phones, and numerous other chores that often go unnoticed, but hopefully don’t go unappreciated by all those that they help and give special attention to. The yearbook staff would like to extend a thank you from the whole school and a special “THANK YOU” from us for all the little and all the big things that are taken for granted. Worth Checking Out! Most people would think that this is a picture of the three amigos at left, but everyone knows at South Dear- born it's the THREE STOOGES! I’ll never get back in the L.M.C. after that remark. Only kidding ladies! Let’s try it again. These three beautiful women operate the center of knowledge, the L.M.C. Ms. Turner, Ms. Coggeshall, and Ms. Lyon are the ones responsible for the grand operation of the school’s media center. It is a very difficult job that many take for granted in an ev- eryday situation. Thank you ladies. 23 The Pick Up Artists There are unsung heros at every school and South Dearborn is no exception to the rule. In this case the school bus drivers fall into this category and they deserve to be recognized for their very impor- tant efforts. It would be impossible to imagine a school being able to operate effectively without the routine job of a good bus driver that is taken for granted. We would like to extend our ap- preciation for a job safely done. Making the Difference In the beginning Society created public schools. The public schools continued to operate on a highly efficient level because of contribu- tion of three groups: students, staff, and the infamous school aides. But seriously folks, these people are very important to the school setting. Their contributions are numer- ous and all of their duties deserve many thanks that have been for- gotten to be given. Leslie Allen and Jackie Grieve we appreciate your efforts and want to express our graditude to- wards you. 24 All For One One For all The saying “Cleanliness is next to Godliness really holds true at South Dearborn High School. The maintenance staff here does an excellent job of keeping the building and surroundings in tip-top shape on a daily basis. With the tremendous size and constant use of the plant, it is no small task trying to keep up with the never ending saga of maintaining the beauty of the school. A continuous 24 hour watch is held on the school and many after hours goes into cleaning the building for the next day. The respon- sibility of this supervision lies upon the shoulders of Mr. Joe Groh who is in charge of maintenance and Mr. Leonard Riddle who also is a supervisor in charge of certain duties. The four people pictured at left plus Harry Bills make up the daytime shift. While Thelma Wilson works the afternoon and Willard Snyder holds down the all important graveyard shift to keep a watchful eye on the school during the night time hours. Super job by all concerned. Putting It All Together Putting it all together is the main objective of these talented ladies who call the cafeteria their home. Providing almost a thousand students with the es- sential daily nutrition required to keep students healthy, these ladies are to be commended for their efforts. Without these la- dies and their culinary skills, our school lunch program would suffer greatly. Although our school lunch program is definitely underappreciated, these ladies spend hours over hot stoves and always produce the best possible meal under the circumstances. As they say in cafeteria talk, this is a job “well done.” Pic- tured at left as follows: P. Gos- sett, B. McAtee, E. Baxter, R. McAllister, M. Tufts, V. Cot- ton, J. Powell, M. Godfrey, B. Riddle, J. Kinnett, N. Meyer, and R. Wilson. 25 Completing Another “10” Here we have them, this year’s group of creative students who have put togeth- er not only this yearbook but also had the sole responsibility of the “Knight Times.” With the aid of Mr. Snyder, they planned a special theme” due to the tenth year of creating a Knight Life annual. S.D. plans to make each of the upcoming yearbooks just as successful! This years successors are as follows: Front row: J. Cheek. D. Lewis, D. Jeffer- son, C. Morling, J. Stratman; Middle: E. Oatman, A. Meyer, K. Bennett, V. Elfers, A. Helton, R. Mulford, A. Cut- ter, C. Schwing; Back: C. Elam, C. Day, S. Rumsey, S. Peterson, T. Scranton, B. Slayback, A. Helton, A. Helton, M. Meucci, and S. Smither. Not pictured: B. Meyer, M. Walter and John Pickett. 26 Main Office Main Helpers Our school’s office is obviously the central point of busy activities. This is where these eight students come into play. They aid getting the many tasks accomplished. The types of duties that these students are responsible for are running errands and other secretarial help needs. Pictured sitting are: H. Wright, S. Weiss, B. Wilson. Standing: A. Helton, S. Higham, C. Walston, P. Engel, and A. Meyer. Actions Speak Louder Than Words This years group of media aides not only helped the librarians but also en- riched the students minds with knowledge about the learning materi- als center. Under the supervision of Mrs. Cog- geshall, they held responsibilities such as checking books out, delivering audio-visual equipment, shelving books, performing graphical work and serving as dark room technicians. These are just some of the tasks they are responsible for. They help the L.M.C. to be a better place to learn and also make it fun. The students at the left are very helpful in the operation of the L.M.C. They are R. Heim, A. Hamby, R. Wilson, K. Davis, A. Schwallie, L. Townsend, L. Luke, K. Droegge, T. Ray, A. Hewitt, R. Schwing, J. Check, C. Swift, G. Wafford, R. Hensley. D. Caswell, J. Cummins, D. Thayer, S. Gabbard, B. Vornheder, P. McGraw and M. Armstrong. Helping In The Fast Lane Other then the office area, the guidance department is a nonstop busy area, from the beginning of the school year until the end. There is no doubt that always something needs to be done. This is one good reason why aides are needed to help the adminis- tration in guidance. These students pictured relay the messages from counselors to students in class, file re- cords and other various activities. Pictured left to right. S. Petty, S. Smither, D. Hall, A. Hall, A. Hewitt, and J. Cairnes. Ushering In Ushering Out These girls need to be recognized for their dedica- tion to S.D.’s basketball program. They have volun- teered their time at all home boys basketball games to keep the numerous amount of fans in line. They also are there to hand out programs. Without them, these games would result in chaos. Pictured here are: Ruth Burress, Mrs. Walton-sponsor, Christinea Nutty, Lori Burgess, and Tara Lee. 28 DAR Good Citizen Steve Gerke, a student at South Dearborn High School, who excels in almost anything he tries, was S.D.’s DAR Good Student. Steve, a member and President of Student Govern- ment, has contributed much to our community through this group. Steve is also a three sport athlete and Valedictorian at S.D. which shows he is an out- standing student and contribu- tor to S.D. and the school sys- tem. Everyone who meets Steve knows that he is a giving person and from this the student body and school are happy to have known him and believe that he exemplifies the DAR good citi- zen. Academic Success: A Natural High National Honor Society recognizes students with scholarship, leadership, character and service. Leadership must be demonstrated by participation in at least one school organiza- tion and character by displaying qualities of integrity, cooperation, and ethics. To be in- ducted each student must maintain a cumula- tive academic average of 3.3 (B + ) or better. This year’s members are above: S. Gerke, K. Hake, A. Rollins, D. Vandever, T. Utter, S. Rumsey, C. Elam, S. Peterson, C. Gilbert, S. Townsend, D. Disbro, D. Collins, A. Ellingh- ausen, K. Hollen, C. Rumsey, B. Hartwell, J. Perkins, and J. Burton. This years inductees are below: Shyra Crider, Sue Haverkos, Bon- nie Berninger, Diane Rubb, Angela Holiday, Angela Hamby, Connie Field, Tim Fiedeldey, Christy Day, Kim Mueller, Tonya Freeman, Stephanie Rullman, Beth Belew, Virginia Hu- depohl, Larry Gabbard, Beth Fiedeldey, Glo- ria Miller, Otto Pittner, Gary Harris, Jim Hughes, Brad Duerstock, Julie Anderson, Kim Weaver, Holly Fehrman, and Kelly Elder and sponsor Ms. Joyce Draut. 29 Science Show Their Pride The yearly Science Fair at South Dearborn is useful in developing the research skills of the students. Those in Honors Biology are re- quired to enter a project and those in other science classes are encouraged to participate. Judges for the Science Fair are usually part of the staff and community professionals. Under the supervision of Mrs. Linda Hall, this years fair has been a success. Language Peddlers Under the direction of Mr. Todd Simms, this years Speech Team members have shown what hard work and practice can accomplish. They are: sitting: Beth Belew, Larry Gabbard; standing: Mr. Simms, Kim Weaver, Ginger Ja- cobs, and Connie Fields. The team has attended many various schools throughout Indi- ana during their competitive sea- son. The S.D. team itself has had much success and plans to contin- ue these accomplishments in the future. My Friend Lies Over The Ocean This year we have three foreign exchange students here at South Dearborn; Manuela Bergman from West Germany, Cissy Van Winden from the Netherlands, and Sayoko Sahara from Japan. They all arrived in the United States in August and will return to their home country in July. Overall these girls had a very positive experience here and we all hope they have the chance to visit again someday. South Dearborn is proud to have foreign exchange students participating in our schools activities and aca- demics. Standing: Sayoko Sahara, Sitting: Cissy Van Winden and Manuela Bergman. How Is Your Social Studies? The studying of different cultures as well as our own is a very important part of a student’s education in mod- ern times. The Social Studies Department here at South Dearborn stresses the under- standing and the need for complete discovery when it comes to the fields of interest in this area. Textbooks are not the only means by which this group of educators perform their duty. Numerous films, guest speakers, a trip to Washing- ton D.C., and other learning experiences were used to promote the educational ideas the instructors wanted to obtain as an objective in a classroom setting. Pictured at right: Don Karasek, Chuch Thomas, Nick Redden, Gary Lyon, and Harley Heim. English Dept.: Nucleus of Education In any school setting the English Department is looked upon as being the hub to all other forms of educa- tion. At South Dearborn this also holds true as the S.D. English group has pioneered many new frontiers into fos- tering a new and improved way of educating the stu- dents. The most recent of which was the addition of a third level of English which has al- lowed mainstreaming and a renewed interest in the all important basics. Journalism which includes both a yearbook production and a monthly newspaper is also a part of this depart- ment. Pictured at right: Ron Nicholson, Todd Simms, De- partment Head Larry Kin- nett, Rick Zimmerman, Pat- ty Rullman, Bill Snyder, and Mary Jane Jewitt. Business and Math: They Both Count! Business is what makes the world go round. It is one of the most beneficial classes that can be taken in one's high school life. Typing, accounting, book- keeping, and many other impor- tant business skills are learned and stressed at this particular school. The whole idea is to point the student into the direction of good business sense for their fu- ture. Without this good sense it would be almost impossible to cope in today’s fast paced, busi- ness-minded society. Pictured at left: Nancy Gerber, Department Head Brenda Myers, Becky Helms, Hank Ahaus, and Lance Pat- terson. Math at South Dearborn has moved into the modern ages with the ever present use of cal- culators and the ever popular computers which has become a major factor in the world of Math. Math still remains a primi- tive science that is highly useful in the everyday life of every per- son. Even the most simple as- pects of life are governed by the field of Math. Pictured at left: Jan Smith, Stu Hall, Rob Moorhead, Bill Clifton, De- partment Head Marilyn Moeller, and Larry Hornbach. 33 Learning the Different Languages. At South Dearborn for- eign language is much more than a class it is an activity. Not only is a class offered, but a club such as German Club and Spanish Club is as- sociated with the classes. Mrs. Sarah Coil is the lone German teacher and is new to S.D. this past year. Ger- man can be taken all four years of high school. Spanish is taught by two teachers, Ms. Joyce Draut and Mr. Gary Lyon. Both have been at S.D. for the full ten years. Ms. Draut is the Depart- ment Head of the Foreign Language Department. Art Class: Pretty as a Picture The Art Depart- ment, under the direc- tion of Mr. Milt Mas- ing as Department Head and Sharon Hinds, experimented in many different areas of the Art World. Ac- tivities and projects such as painting, sketching, collages, and abstracts were just a few of the many chal- lenges faced by the art students. The art department has also become quite famous for their differ- ent murals and paint- ings that decorate the walls of the gym area. This type of project helped to increase spir- it and beauty to our school. Proper Science Not Weird Science Science is the search for knowl- edge and that is more or less the motto of the Science Department here at South Dearborn. Classes range from Physics to Earth Science and every- thing in between. Pictured at left arc as follows: Paul Tiskus, Nancy Glassburn, Depart- ment Head Linda Hall, Merrill Hutchinson, Gary Hall, Denny Dilts, and Bill Clifton. Home on the Range How many times have you heard the complaint, “I’m not learning anything in school that I can use in the real world!” These complainers such look into one of our more useful departments. Home Economics. Courses at S.D. range from clothing and foods to child de- velopment and family living. Department Head Kathy Green and Mrs. Hawes tried to teach our students the information need- ed in coping with mod- ern society. 35 Education that is Special The Special Educa- tion Department at South Dearborn main objective is to teach the youth of the day to be able to cope with the many difficult situa- tions found out in the real world. The life outside the school is tough enough and spe- cial help is needed by many to prepare them. Karen Greene, Glenda Uhlmansiek, and Mary Beth Hedrich are the teachers pic- tured at right that do such a fine job in this so very important en- deavor. Agriculture: Hands on Experience Under the direction of Mr. Walter Ellison, the Agricul- ture classes have prospered not only academically but also in hands on experience out in the real world. Many hours of the various classes offered are spent doing ac- tivities such as judging, par- ticipating, and operating the things needed to become a top notch student in the “field” of agriculture. Mr. Ellison also displays his new computers in the pic- ture at right. 36 The Physical Side of Education South Dearborn is considered to have one of the finest Physical Education facility in the state of In- diana. The plant itself is very well organized for the full benefit that physical education can provide. Four full gym floors which allows basketball, volley- ball, tennis, badminton, and others to be played at the same time. Another feature is the beautiful glass enclosed swimming pool which year round lessons and classes are held once again for the benefit of the students. The outside space is ample with two football fields, weight room, and two baseball fields. All in all the whole physical education facility is next to none. Pictured at left as follows: Dennis Dilts, Depart- ment Head Lloyd Nowlin, Pam Merril, Bob Kelsik, and Jim Shannon. Art Industrially Speaking By not only using creativity, their minds, and their hands, the Industrial Art’s stu- dent hammer down to learn the skills needed in the world of indus- try. Classes such as blue- printing, woodwork- ing, metal working, welding, and machine shop are all offered for the students advan- tage. Pictured at left as follows: Foster Harris, Department Head Mike Scudder, and Pat Medlock. 37 CLUBS ORGANIZATIONS Names in alphabetical order: A. Adams. A. Albrecht. J. Althoff. J. Anderson. M. This reputation is one that is grow- ing far outside the greater Tri-State area. And the reputation that they are getting is all good. Watching this 145 member plus band per- form is often done in amazement as one can hardly believe the sight they are beholding. Many hours of long tedious hours goes into this type of work. The reward for this hard work is well worthwhile as the band displays its talents in an array of places such as River- front Stadium, home football games, home basketball Christmas show, Aurora Farmer's Fair, Pumpkin Show, and anywhere else that they can showcase at. This could not be possible without the ef- forts of David Kling, Doug Sykes, and Steve Hedges. Their time and energy has made the band the quality that it is today. 39 Top Left: The big Red, White, and Blue marches on. Above: Happy cat and Big B are looking for each others horns. Top Right: A smile that broke a thousand hearts. Above Right: Told you Cindy that Jeremy would make a better Prom date. Right: Jim and Kevin make a Cindy sandwich. 40 S.D. Band Students The student life in the band department has to be considered one of fun filled hours with numer- ous hours of very difficult work. This doesn’t seem to make sense to have fun and still have to work hard, but this is exactly what goes on in the zaniest section in the high school. Life as a band member is exciting and should be tried by anyone that wants to learn how to work and play for a common goal that shows your talents. Along with band comes responsibilities that must be taken on. Probably the most difficult of these jobs is being a Drum Major. Pictured at left stands this year’s Drum Majors Brad Duerstock and Larry Gabbard. These two men did a very respectable job leading the band and doing their responsibilities. South Dearborn’s Electric Knight Orchestra, be known as the E.K.O., was as big as a hit as ever i year. They performed at varsity basketball gar which gave that extra school spirit that is always ne ed. The E.K.O. also traveled with the Swing Choii play at the various Junior Highs and Middle School the South Dearborn School Corporation. There the i ented musicians could do the many antics that they so well known for. E.K.O. Swingers The South Dearborn Swing Choir is an elite group of singers and dancers that perform all over the area. The auditions for this group is at the beginning of the school year and a great deal of time for preparation goes into these highly respected try outs. As the pictures show throughout this page, energy abounds from all those who participates in the perfor- mances that the swing choir puts on. Director Steve Hedges demands all the effort that an individual can give and this is what makes it a success. I f you have a desire to sing and dance, make sure you contact Mr. Hedges and become one of the few and proud. S.D. Twirlers: All The Right Moves The 1987-88 Feature twirlers are Holly Fehrman and Stephanie Emery. These two young ladies put hours upon hours of work to perfect this talent. This twosome performs in the Riverfront Stadium at the Reds game with the band as well as the Dillsboro and Aurora Farm- er’s Fair parade. This group found its im- portance in the basic principle in which it is governed, and that lies in the area of learning the democratic process and the ability of working as a unit to succeed for a common goal. Mrs. Kathy Green is the sponsor and she stress active involve- ment by all who are elected to this very honorable association. The duties of each member are numerous and vital to the workability of the group. Each member and especially the officers know that they are needed to make the Student Government work both for the students and the administration. The role of the Student Government is to combine the ideas and wishes of the students with that of the administration. The capabil- ity and ability of the group to do an effective job of this above mentioned role is where the learning process takes place. The officers standing at left are as follows: Scott Petty, Angie Rollins, Sheila Townsend, and Steve Gerke. 50 Top Lefl: Sheila points the way to Student Government suc- cess. World of Academics Each year the world of academ- ics becomes more and more impor- tant and South Dearborn is also striving to maintain a standard that is high and to the brim with quality. The establishment of competing academic teams in the Eastern In- diana Athletic Conference was a strong step forward in improving the atmosphere of academics in a high school setting. Each school from the conference sends a representative and a total of 6 meetings are set up for the teams to participate in. This year South Dearborn finished 3rd in the competition trailing the top two schools by only a few points. To strengthen our team and to get as many people as possible to compete and try out, a complete program of academic intramurals is offered for the students’ enjoy- ment and knowledge. Make sure you give the world of academics a try. S.D. Spellers — Webster Approved! Where would we be without the fine art of spelling. Many scholars feel that spelling is the key to all communication and maybe to all of education itself. South Dear- born tries to do its part by putting together a competing spelling team. Mr. Larry Kinnett supervises this group of young intellects and coaches them through the trials and tribulations of competition. This all starts with try outs and after the team is set good old meet- ings take place for the purpose of intense practice. The competition runs on to a state high school level and eventually to national level. If you have a knack for spelling or find yourself reading a lot of dictionaries, give it a try. SADD Beginnings . Happy Endings! Each year numerous deaths oc- cur because of drinking and driv- ing. This needless waste of life must be stopped. One of the best ways to put an end to this tragedy is to educate the youth in our high schools. To try to get them to real- ize that drunk driving is a crime and it costs dearly to commit this type of crime. This is why South Dearborn was one of the first high schools in the area to start SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) chapter. The sponsor is Hank Ahaus and he tries to reinforce the idea of many and that is not to fall prey to drink- ing while being behind the wheel. The response to this group of students has been very positive and we all hope that one day a group such as this will become non-exis- tent because we learned not to pay the price! 53 The Club That Really Counts. The South Dearborn Math Club is one of the more success- ful clubs at our school. Mr. Larry Hornbach is the sponsor and organizer and his main ob- jectives all center around mak- ing everyone in the club the fin- est math student he or she can be. Any one that has an interest in math can join the fun. All you have to do is see Mr. Horbach and take the various math tests. These math tests are then taken and evaluated at a state level to see how your math knowledge compares to other students in Indiana. From this comparison school officials can tell the effectiveness of their math program. The Pass Word Is Checkmate To know how to play chess is considered one of the more elite status symbols of the world to- day. And wouldn’t you know it that good old S.D. has a chess club just so you can gain that elite status. Or if your not into status symbols then how about playing just for the fun and ex- citement of it. The sponsor of the chess club is Paul Tiskus and he enjoys the game so he helps others with this intricate form of game- boarding. The club members try to get together as much as possible to refine each others skills. There is also an occasional competiton outside the school setting with other nearby high schools. 54 It is scary to think that one day the fate of the world may be in your hands. That is why everyone at South Dearbon is so very thankful that we have a Science Club to hope us prepare for that very day. All kidding aside the Sci- ence Club at S.D. is very helpful when one has a thirst for the knowledge that sci- ence has to offer. M rs. Linda Hall is the sponsor of this club and tries to convey the importance that science plays in everyday life and why it is so important to un- derstand it the best one can. The club does many fun things like projects and field trips that both investigate and demonstrate the world of science. If you like science or are just plain curious, give this club a try. Scientists of Tomorrow 55 Stage Production: Setting the scene Stage production is an elite group of young men who make plays, musicals and other productions possible. Light- ing, scenery, and general atmosphere are what these guys do best! This year the stage production class played a very im- portant role in the play “Teahouse of the August Moon”. Without the expert sce- nery created by these talented folks many a play would have lost its appeal and, therefore, decreased the success of the production. A special thanks to these great, great boys for the excellent work they have done for the benefit of the ac- tors and actresses, the audience, and of course for their own personal satisfac- tion of a job well done! 56 SD’S Green Thumbers SD’s green thumbers are those guys involved in the Future Farmers of Amer- ica with a special knack for agriculture. Art Club Draws The Line i k Many artists are tempermental, but not these talented young folks involved in the art club. This organization pro- vides an outlet for persons with artistic leanings to express themselves. Mr. Milt Masing is the sponsor of the art club. Members pictured at left are: Tracey Pruss, Cissy Van Winden, Valer- ie Calendar, Tina Richards, Michelle Red Elk, Kathy Dills, Linda Baker, and Mr. Masing. Keep up the good work!!! 57 Those Simply Krazy Krauts An elite group at SD is the German club. It is only open to those currently enrolled in German and is therefore limited. Even with these restrictions the membership is ex- ceedingly high. The German club is a unique way to practice and of course per- fect your pronounciation and grammar in the German language. Those involved also find it extremely fun! This year found the club initiating a new sponsor. Leadership changes are alwyas difficult, but this group weathered the stormy times and things are looking great! This special day in- volves members of the group going to se- lected businesses of the area and learning how the business works from the inside. This experience gives these students hands on experience in the every day workings of a business. Miss Flelms is the sponsor for this great group and she has done a wonderful job with this young group of future business leaders! LOOK OUT WORLD!!!!!! These sometime hoopsters really have fun out on the court, but they are very competitive too. This program is a way for young men who do not participate in the high school varsity system to enjoy the sport at a little more competitive level than the street level. Members of this years winning team First Row: Darrell Thayer, Garry Wafford, Mike Langdon. Row 2: Brad lekenroth, Joe Zoller, Todd Langdon, Doug Powell, Bob Lyons Ten Pin Fun Another type of intramurals at South Dearborn is bowling intramur- als. This involved both males and fe- males. Participants competed at the Durbin Bowl in Lawrenceburg. This program gave students a chance to enjoy a sport that is not a part of the athletic program at the high school. Those who competed felt that it was fun and hope to see it continue in the future years. Winners of bowling in- tramurals are pictured at right. 60 SPORTS Fix It Crew When you mention a fix it crew, one would think maybe you are talking about the main- tenance department at South Dearborn. In this case we are talking about the fine training team. It would be impossible to run an athletic program properly without the aid of trainers. They spend a vast amount of time trying to keep the players together long enough to com- pete and they do a super job of it. Pictured at right: Kneeling - Matt Hummel, Julie Karp, Mike Langdon, Tom Utter. Standing - Sherry Pettit, Tina Mangold, Mike Emery, and Joe Mann. The S.D. team won 5 firsts and 6 seconds out of 20 events which is an excellent per- centage. The highlight of the season was the Team’s trip to Indiana State University in June for the Indiana Special Olympic State Games. Approximately 2,200 athletes from all over the state of Indiana competed in the meet. Honorary Coach Steve Alford spoke during the Open- ing Ceremonies which were fol- lowed by 3 days of athletic com- petition. The South Dearborn team competed in the track and field events. In the summer the cheerleaders attended camp which showed them new ideas as well as new techniques. With the new year also came a new sponsor, Patty Gossett took over the cheerle- aders with much enthusiasm and leadership. The cheerle- aders sponsored a beach party which became an excellent fund raiser. Also for the first time the girls sold “South Dearborn Knights” key chains which helped raise money as well as school spirit. There was a new tradition started this year for cheerle- aders. Instead of the regular six it became seven places. The increase in positions was to do new stunts and to cre- ate more spirit. Cheerleaders have an important job: they are the people responsible for creating spirit at sporting events as well as school. KNIGHTS FOREVER Spirit is displayed by the pep club of South Dearborn High School. They deser- ve much credit for all the time and effort that they contribute to our school. The pep club carries out many duties that go unnoti- ced by many individuals. They put up signs for ail types of sports and create spirit in and out of school. The spirit may just be ap- parent in school but the members of the pep club go above and beyond their duty to cre- ate spirit at school activities and sporting events. Assisting the pep club at sporting events are the dragon and the yell-leaders. Both the dragon and the yell-leader are supports in bringing spirit to the crowd at many of the sporting events. The dragon brings en- thusiasm to the children and adults at the games while the yell-leaders assist the cheerleaders in creating spirit and cheers at the games. Striving For Excellence The 1987 football season was one of excitement, success, defeat, and many other learning experiences. The team took on the challenge of the '87 season with much pride and dedication. This pride and dedication along with determination showed the qualities of a fine team and more important, a group of fine young men. Though the success of this team was not always shown on the score board, these young men reached many team and individual goals. The hard work put into reaching these goals mustn’t go unnoticed. The team and the coaches put in many hours trying to make this team the best it could possibly be. This hard work paid off in many different ways. The memories left behind from the 1987 season will be cherished by the team and the coaches, and all of the hard work and dedication will also be remem- bered. The young men also learned to strive for excel- lence for the rest of their lives. 65 66 67 Tomorrow’s Grid Iron Heroes • at 99 mu ff I if Freshman Left to right: First row Jerry Powell, Travis Draper, Dale Engle. And they had four team members elected to the EIAC conference team which are: Christy Day, Gloria Miller, Kathy Da- vis, Kelly Elder, and one team member elected as MVP of the Conference. This person is Kelly Elder. Coach Pam Mer- rill dealt with a young but strong team with only 3 seniors. They were strong in all areas of passing, setting attacking leading them to their Conference title. The team finished out the season with a 16-7 record, a Conference Title, Ripley County Tourney Champs and won their 7th consecutive Sectional Title. Like all beginnings there must be an end and the Lady Knights found that end in the first round of the Regionals to Jennings County, a team ranked ninth in the state. The boys Varsity squad for 1987-88 was headed by first year coach Jim Shannon and led by Seniors Chris Daugherty, Bruce Murray, Danny Jefferson, Chris Rumsey and Jim Batchelor. The Knights are young and talented and show a lot of promise for years to come. The team was put through a tough time at first, but then they started to mold together and became a true team. The Knights finished out their regular season with a record 8-12. The team finished third in the Conference and played arch rival Lawrenceburg in the first game of section- al. S.D. and Lawrenceburg met twice dur- ing the regualr season and split the wins by going into overtime both times. Yet, in the sectional game Lawrenceburg prevailed and beat S.D. 78 to 70. Even though with the losses S.D. Knights had some pretty strong individual perfor- mances. The most assists award went to Bruce Murray. Most rebounds, Derek Schneider. Best free throw percentage was awarded to Jeff Stratman and the attitude award went to Jim Batchelor. The Knights, even though having a losing record proved to a lot of people during the 1987-88 season that the Knights will be back strong next year. Reserve and Frosh: On The Move! Individual awards at the end of the year were given out to Eric Sherman for most rebounds and best free throw percentage. The boy’s freshman squad for the 1987-88 season was coached by Larry Hornbach. The team finished out the season 11-6. The free throw trophy went to Craig Fitzpatrick. The freshman squad showed many people that they will be very capable to handle the job of varsity and reserve when the time comes. Special thanks goes out to Rob Curry, who helped Mr. Horn- bach out with coaching the freshman B team. This group of girls have specific jobs to do. Some of them clean the mats, while others tend to keeping score. Since most of the matches were away the girls only had to concen- trate on cheering on the wrestlers. Front row Left to Right: Dawn Disbro, Staci Spears, Krista Goodpaster, Amy DeSalvo. MORE THAN MAT MAIDS Our 1987-88 reserve wrestling team had a very good season with a 3- 1 record. Their three victorious matches were held against Conners- ville Brookville, and Lawrenceburg. With a reserve team like this, we have a good advantage with our varsity team next year. Front left to right: John Murphy, Brett Presley, Tom Wells, Jake Stewart, Keremy Wilson, Krista Goodpas- ter. Although not setting the world on fire with their record they surprised many an opponent with the hardness and dedi- cation in which they performed. Small in nunmbers but large in desire led them to a satisfying year filled with many goals and objectives being met. Potential shines bright for the future as many of last year’s performers were hungry underclassmen ready to tackle yet another season and make it even more successful. Seated: (L to R) D. Kelly, B. The South Dearborn girls showed why they are considered to have some of the most athletically talented abili- ty in southern Indiana. The girls’ track team was highly successful once again this year. The girls finished second in the conference and were very impressive in the sectional. One of many highlights of the year was Kelly Elder’s record breaking discus throws in both the sectionals and the regionals. 91 STROKE OF CONFIDENCE Front row: left to right—Brad Ducrstock, Steve Gerke, Gary Vogclgcsang. Steve Gerke, Gary Vogelge- sang, Eric Kuehling, and Matt Hummel were the returning sen- iors, along with Mike Emery. The rest of the team consists of three juniors: Brad Duerstock, John Althoff, Donnie Taggart; sopho- more: Todd Whitson; and freshman: Tony Hummel. Placing second in first singles was Stephanie Em- ery and second in third singles was Amy Helton. The season record ended up as 9-6 and confer- ence record was 5-2. The girls had a very successful season with the girls showing a lot of determination and never giving up on any match. Most Improved Player was given to Angie Hel- ton. Coach Don Karasek stated that the boys played well but their lack of experience hurt them. The boys consisted of: back row; Bruce Murray, Brad Ickenroth, Todd Langdon, Kevin Burris, and Coach Don Karasek. Front row; Kenny Fischer, Jim Johnson, Stacy Meyer, David Burris, Kevin Gerke, and Craig Fitzpatrick. The boys ended their season 1-15, finish- ing fifth in conference and sectional. 96 Covering All The Bases The 1988 Softball team at South Dearborn bounced back from a very slow start to end up with a very respectable season. Being only the second year of a relatively new sport in high school, the girls took the field with eagerness to take on any opponent. Softball has still not caught on in popularity as only 12 girls came out for the team, but one has to remember that quality far outweighs quanity, and this statement definitely held true for this year’s team. Not only is it a new sport, but there was also a new coach involved with an array of fresh recruits because of the numerous graduates that no longer could be counted on for this season’s team. Considering all these obstacles the girls did quite well in achieving as many of their goals and objectives as they could during the course of the year. Fast pitch softball is an excellent game and very competitive for young adults. If you have any interest in playing next spring, get into shape and break out the old glove. Front (L to R): M. Over the years the South Dearborn baseball teams have been the most productive win wise than most of the other athletic teams put together. But all things must come to an end and even though the season was not as successful as usual there were sparks of potential in this failing season. After the number of losses over the last two years to numerous gradu- ations, a rebuilding year had to fig- ured on and this is exactly what hap- pened as the youth of tomorrow had to be used today. The boys of summer flirted with the 500% all season and by the end of the whole affair showed vast signs of improvement which is sure to carry over to next year and the years after. Coach Hornbach feels that if the boys play a lot of ball over the sum- mer they should be ready to increase the number in the win column. Definitely Not Out-of-Bounds Young and energetic would be the key way to describe this season's golf team and the way and desire in which they played were also expressed by enthusiasm. Under the direction of Coach Chuck Thomas, which was in his first year, the golf team tried to cover all the angles by con- stantly going over the basics. In the game of golf the young must learn the basics before any real progress can be made. Even though the reoerd did not express what was achieved, the players advanced to a new realm of under- standing of all aspects that can later be mastered by this inexperienced group of linksters. The team is pictured at top left and are as follows: Standing (L to R): J. Hughes, B. Murray, R. Strassmeier, S. Petty, C. March. B. Ruter, and Coach Chuck Thomas. Kneeling (L to R): D. McNealy, D. UNDERCLASS The Freshman class of 1987- 1988 entered South Dearborn very timid and unsure of their new envi- ronment. They learned to work to- gether in their very successful pro- ject of selling candy. Sponsor, Gene Cleary, guided the Fresh- man students with their candy sale in order to support them for their Junior Year Prom. As the year went on, the Rookies developed into maturing young adults; ready to meet the upcom- ing years of high school life. With this progress, the final level of Sen- iorism will be the ultimate goals. The class officers for the Fresh- man group did an excellent job throughout the year. Being such an outstanding class. South Dearborn has very high hopes for these graduates. As scared Freshman, the students slowly became families with the seemingly huge school. During their Sophomore year the feeling of finally “belong- ing” was a welcomed blessing. When their Junior year finally rolled around a realm of long lasting friendships had blossomed and plans for the future were brewing. And yes, the year they’ve all been waiting for, the class of '88 has completed twelve years of hard work and sacrifice. They are now the infamous “Senior Class.” The Senior Class Officers are pictured to the right: President—Jim Harland, Vice President—Sara Rumsey, Secretary—Cindy Gilbert, Treasurer—Stacey Peterson. 4 my 4dama Pa Uc4 4tec 7%an4 4’imal auy 4 my SaJtti “Paula “Sa4t s4(laa Sarny flamca “Salc tclax 79Cic4c t Sautn “Saxtci goalee Saxten 0HU Uam “Scitu KCm SchhcCC S ciiy Stniy Daum “Sayti Aeolic S’taum fjaaa Staumlny 131 H4f “Slue £( Ai« “StUCe '?%a %lly ‘SlUtQQC 'StVUfC pCHHifa SuxO%4t “Kcwiy “SuftHtt « e At u™ + ‘£ «9 e e «4a i su e« et pull gfalden Tftuu 0AmUm$ “Kelly (?( xA WieAiul (?l x£ I “Dcut (?U ti4f rftuOutv (ZUcten Ua uUy ffyeviold (Z-uuvfcxd 4 my (£ UirU€ (? vuxl (?ummt«A (Joaoh (ZdmmiHA s4tllAA t (?tau 'KaiAy T uaIa 04 IaU« T y gbilA T uyAtx(y 7 mmy ‘DauyAvity P %harta “Dctmen 72 u m T)tA iA 133 Class of ’88 Seniors 4Uee Karen T nae e Z a e Swl Mr (?-ufAta Si Kane . partner ScatZ '? v£en IR per 'ptc aaeeAe Steve tfcnte 7 y nf tfiffin (Ziadej tfUSent 'tfrcatAen IfUtent T a tftfola ‘PcfW fovi T)C xhc fie U 'KcMy 'Kate 4ayt a % ££ T i « e Walt THcfaU ' a tjtf 4t pirn ‘WasUatui U£ 'ZtcvUatcU S t (fany '%c Uy 7£cid 'ZtcHtUy Tfcy a ityentuCAH s4tyc a 4 my ‘ZtctaCtt 135 Class of ’88 lors 'KtfcdtM 7i 'KtfUe %le 0Kuc4li u} uf cu ux 0K wiy uZ uiW s4 H4f CUlScrf 7 %dd T U td i 4m€y€ t 7%tvttfy jZovc Pau a yU ind «4 7« Xfm ?9t cV H d TlicoU Tftan td 137 Class of ’88 Seniors Ptt H TKcKiMthj s4hha )Kt4f£n 4 ylc TfCeyen KCm 0?%,t elUn Tftile TKeucci SA t a “THcyen THieteUe THct Ufc ‘Seely THeyen SctA PcjtyUe PexAl Q ST in in © 00 00 pa tU. Many hours of planning and preparation went into the organization of this event. The Prom took place at Holiday Inn East in Cincy and the After-Prom was at Burgundy’s. A good time was had by all and next year's will be just as exciting. Royalty: Corey Short. Tara Mocehring. Dan Schroeder. Connie Walston, Bruce Murray, Cindy Gilbert, Dawn Disbro. The audience of parents, friends, and other relatives feels a sense of pride and praise for the individual that walks so distinctly across the stage. While the emotions of the audience were running high, the all important graduates were having feeling that they will hold onto forever and will cherish for many years to come. The start of a new beginning and a recent loss of a lifestyle that lasted 12 years creates a situation that leaves a mind in a state of certain confusion. The 1988 graduation at South Dearborn went as smooth as the infamous silk and without hestiation over 250 students obtained a major goal in the big game of life. Congratulations to the class and to Steve Gerke for being Valedic- torian and Angie Rollins for being Salutatorian both are pictured at below and right.
