Mr. Kinnett felt the play was well-received by the audiences. Many people were overwhelmed by the technical work—the remarkable set and exciting lightening effects. He personally felt that the performance matched the technical dra- ma. The annual celebra- tion sponsored by the Juniors is an honor of the senior class and is the last socialization that al- lows five to six hundred school mates to express friendship in an atmosphere of true fellowship. This fantastic evening takes months of prep- aration which includes the first class meeting for organizational committees to fund raising, to in- terviews, to publicity, to the actual buying of the personal garments that highlight the beauty of the festive promenade. The 1987 Prom will be looked upon as a model evening for future affairs as the participants showed that they could have fun and enjoy them- selves while maintaining their composure and maturity. All the entertainment and actions of the night had the air of young adult fun in a modest atmosphere. some, Beautiful, and Elegant The highlight of every Prom lies in the special segment of selecting, voting, and announcing the royalty of the evening. This year was no exception as the crowd anxiously awaited the ceremonial walk by the candidates to the forefront to get a firsthand view of whom was going to be chosen as the lucky young gentleman and lady. Representing the Junior class were as follows: (left to right from picture shown at left) Bobby Shinkle, Connie Walston, Jason Cummins, Amy Anderson, Matt Hummel, and Heather Gilbert. The happy winners are shown below as cheerful Connie and proud Matt display their glee over the honor of the crown. Representing the Senior class were as follows: (left to right from picture on page 14) Glen Bur- ris, Aimee Buck, Brad Tyler, Amy McFelea, John Gossett, and Angie Lee. What we are talking about is the infamous Children’s theater presented for any person young in age or in heart. That’s why the title is so fitting. The performers, adults, and other high- aged kids vastly enjoy the antics up on the lighted stage. The cast at right under the direction of Mr. Todd Simms (below) did a superb job as they delighted everyone that took in the performance. The play “Jack and the Beanstalk” is always a favorite for both young and old. A tale that teach- es a lesson as well as entertains in a light humored way. Once again a job well done by all concerned and we know by all the smiling faces that day in the audience that we will be looking forward to next year. 4 a NOT JUST FOR KIDS!! Upper Left, Upper Right, Above Left: Jack (Larry Gabbard) struggles with two of man’s most dreaded foes: COWS WOMEN. Above: I’ve heard of hen-pecked but never rooster grabed. Dave Kling, Steve Hedges, and Doug Sykes are the main organizers that try to put this youthful talent in perspective. The show itself is one of the leading moments in the school year. Students, teachers, adminis- trators, and staff all have the chance to partici- pate in this fun-filled evening. The acts themselves take many hours of orga- nization and preparation because not every act is given the chance to perform. The tryouts are im- portant so that an act can get on the lighted stage for the intense moments. Once again everyone that was involved in this year’s show did a super job and deserve another round of applause. “Variety” of Talent! Top: The infamous “HEE-HAW scene was a hit at the show. The education of Ameri- ca’s youth has to be consid- ered the most important ele- ment in our society today. That is why it is so vital to have key personnel in the top branch of the institution. South Dearborn is lucky enough to have qualified people at the Central Office to keep the plant running correctly. Central Office: Standing—Phyllis Mills, Ruth Mary Kern, Jimma Glenn, and Norma Henke. Seated—Dave Glenn, Greg Platt, William Naylor. 25 Combinations of Leadership and Guidance Above: Guidance Department—Gene Cleary, Pat Turner, and Steve Mendel Above Right: Assistant Principal Marlene Denmure Right: Attendance Officer: Jean Bauer We would also like to take the time to say THANK YOU to Jean Bauer and her dedicated service to the school. Jean is going to retire after this year. We are going to miss her smiling face. 26 Learning Many Concepts The Learning Materials Center has become a place of learning many concepts. This place is run by three women, Joanne Coggeshell, Joy Lyon, and Verneda Wendleman, who provide a great service to the students of SD; they serve the students in the LMC. The LMC has become an important place to find information and obtain answers to questions that students need in their quest for knowledge. The LMC contains books that provide needed in- formation for assignments and enjoymen t. It also contains Mi- crofiche which is an important source for information about to- pics and colleges. The LMC is truly one of the essential de- partments that aids students. Without this center there would be a lot of unanswered ques- tions that need to be answered. Behind the Scenes These three women Shirley Geisler, Jean Sneed, and Bren- da Walton are only a few im- portant people behind the scenes at SD that help keep the institution running smoothly. If a problem should arise, they are quick to the rescue and get the situation back under control. They accomplish a lot of tasks besides just answering tele- phones that otherwise might not get done. These women are a true asset to the running of our school. SOUTH DEARBORN HIGH SCHOOL LIBRARY 27 Bus Drivers Moving It On. The bus drivers of SD have become a necessity in helping students get to their destinations on time. These people are truely a dedicated group of people. In all kinds of weather and at a variety of hours, these people arrive to take a bunch of teenagers to and from school. A lot of these people go unnoticed, but this group is a very im- portant group of people. I think everyone owes them a big thank you! Due to the number of bus drivers they all could not be named. However, we would like to thank them very much. Getting It All Together The cooks of SD are a group of wom- en who are some- times taken for granted. They pro- vide an essential job for the students. While a lot of peo- ple like to joke and tell gruesome sto- ries about the cafe- teria’s food. Howev- er, this is not true for the students of SD. They are lucky to have such a dedi- cated group of women to cook for them. They also provide the students with a variety of foods. Pictured above: Edna Baxter, Patricia Gossett, Nadine Meyer, Jeanne Kinnett, Betty Riddll, Myrtle Tufts, Marie Godfrey, Vivian Cotton, Geraldine Powell, Barbara McAtee, Ruth McAllister, and Ruth Wilson. 28 School Aides Pictured left: Leslie Allen and Jackie Grieve In the beginning society created public schools. The public schools continued to op- erate on a highly efficient level because of the contributions of three groups: Students, staff, and the infamous school aides. But seriously folks, these people are very impor- tant to the school setting. Their contribu- tions are numerous and all of their duties deserve many thanks that have been forgot- ten to be given. Leslie Allen and Jackie Grieve we appreciate your efforts and want to extend our gratitude towards you. The Main Crew: Gets It Done V 7 ' y w 3 There are many people who help to keep South Dearborn clean and running smoothly. The main group however, is the maintenance crew. Everyone has seen these people in the halls of South Dearborn at one time or another. These peo- ple are constantly at work improving and repairing things in the school. Without these people, our school would in no way be the efficient institution it is today. Pictured above: Joe Groh Pictured below: Lenard Riddle 29 The Music Combination The South Dearborn band is the perfect mu- sic combination. They have always been a smashing success throughout their career. Wherever they perform, whether it would be at a football game, Riverfront Stadium, pa- rades, or basketball games, they exit with ap- plause from a roaring crowd. The band is directed by Dave Kling and assisted by Doug Sykes. Both have been a true asset in the success of the group. They dedi- cated themselves to making the group the best it can be. They have been more than successful in their job. 30 SSL • -it ' i v. i . I . |V • , r V Above Left: The S.D. Band doing their thing at the Aurora Farmer’s Fair. Left: The outstanding S.D. W‘ a : A ’’ v ' 1___ 31 What The Electric Knight Or- chestra has to be considered the zaniest and craziest group at good old South Dearborn. This wild bunch puts a new meaning to the word spirit. Their antics amaze and astound the visit- ing opponents when they see this mob run out from all dif- ferent directions with multi- styled apparel. Their looks and actions are only second to the highly professional manner in which they sound and per- form. If there was such a contest, I’m sure the E.K.O. would win hands down. It is hard to express exact- ly what this organization really means to the school. All we can say is thank you very much for a job well done. a Combination This Is! 32 Bottom Left: These four people helped get things ready so that the band could perform. Mr. Hedges wanted to give special thanks. The Vocal Sound of S.D. The golden throated singers of the South Dear- born high school chorus delighted many an audi- ence and dazzled many a spectator with their wide range of vocal excellence and their true pro- fessionalism in dealing with how they handle their performances. Under the direction of Mr. Steve Hedges, the high school chorus has blossomed into one of the finest singing and performing groups in Indiana. Each year their annual shows draw rave reviews as the audiences pack the arena to hear these young talented pitch carriers. It is a pleasure to be associated with a high school that is represented so proudly with a cho- rus such as South Dearborn. A truly wonderful job was done by all concerned and by the leaders of the group. The South Dearborn Flag Corp is one of the more pop- ular groups. These pretty young ladies display their flags at every band perfor- mance and are on special dis- play at varsity football and basketball games. At some of these games they are high- lighted so that the audience may notice their super tal- ent. Tryouts for this organiza- tion is during the summer so make sure you contact the school for information lead- ing to you belonging to this wonderful group. Flags and Shields On Display Leading the band at every parade or good old march are the beautiful young ladies known as the shield carriers. The main re- sponsibilities of this group is to make sure that everyone in the audience knows exact- ly who is the fantastic band in back of them. To carrier the letters of South Dearborn takes practice and care so that it looks profession- al and done with an im- mense amount of pride. This job is not to be taken lightly because it is very important to let people know that S.D.’s band is on the move. 4 W Top Picture: Tanya Cochran, Angie Rollins, Robin Fogle, Bonnie Bcrningcr, Mary Walter, Alison Kyle, Sharon Holt, Debbie Collins, Kristie Anderson, Holly Bessler, Leslie Filter, and Shari Caudill. Each year several young talent- ed ladies try to become one of the sequenced beauties that perform in front of audiences for many different occasions throughout the year. Joann Coggeshell is the organizer of the group as well she helps with the flag corp. Joann tries to teach the girls that work- ing together in a cooperat- ive way will produce great results and will assure the girls success now and lat- er when they learn the valuable lesson of work- ing with your fellow per- son. Front Row: Leigh Gilb, Angela Rullman, Mary Pfister, Angie Lee, Debbie Funch, Tammy Waite, Kristen Nichols, Lysa Fischer, Amy McFelea, Shyra Crider, and Chelsa Stonebraker. If you are interested in trying out for this group make sure you contact the school and practice those dance steps. S.D.’s Swinging Singers The Swing Choir at South Dearborn has a perfect name as they do swing into all their performances with extreme enthusiasm and desire to express their enjoy- ment over being able to perform for their audiences. This lively group never lacks that zeal that makes them tick. Mr. Steve Hedges also has them to that fine tuned edge when it comes to their singing voices. It is easy to see why this squad of young talent is so popular. Excellent job by those red and white clad singers. The pictures to the right are taken from the travels of the Swing Choir. Each year the group goes to the Ju- nior Highs to perform and entertain the young chil- dren. This has become one of the most popular trips that involves the music department. Strong Freshman Group—Bright Music Future The band at South Dearborn is considered to be one of the best in the state. To keep this reputation alive there must be a strong feeder program to re- place the talent lost each year to graduation. The freshman band pictured above prepares for the big band sound by doing much the same as the regular high school band. The younger group marches in parades such as the one at left; the Aurora Farmer's Fair. There is a lot of preparation for the future, but we have no fear that Mr. David Kling will have this young group of musi- cians ready for the years ahead. STUDENT HELPERS One of the busiest places at South Dearborn High School has got to be the guidance department. Many activities go on in the guidance area from the time school starts un- til it ends. This is one good reason why aides are needed to help the people out in guidance. These students pictured here are the ones who catch all of the extra work that has to be done, nothing real dif- ficult, but just little things that the students are able to handle. VIDEO CLUB: LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION! The Video Club here at South Dearborn has done an excellent job filming the many activities that have taken place. The five students to the right (L-R) that belong to this club include Julie Bear, Kernie Nicholos, Ken- ny Johnson, Reid Hensley, and Mark Armstrong. There are many duties that these students have to perform. They include taping of extra-curricular ac- tivities such as: Intramurals, It’s Academic, various clubs and other related events. The Spring drama of “Any Number Can Die” and the musical of “The Childrens Theatre” were also very high of the list of many taping activities. Athletic events were also very important to the Video Club. Every football and basketball game was taped and the many other sports here at South Dear- born were also caught on film. The members of this club are very important to everyone in the school because almost everything that takes place these people get it on tape. 38 STUDENTS GAIN RESPONSIBILITY AT HUB OF SCHOOL The main office at South Dear- born is a very busy place through- out the course of the school year. The numerous tasks that occur in this part of the school are very im- portant but yet are things that can be entrusted with the students. The picture to the left shows these students that play a very impor- tant role in the main office. The types of duties that these students perform include running errands and copying off important papers. These are just some of the things that these aides do to help the office administration. These students are very impor- tant in the function of the main office at South Dearborn. AIDING IN THE EVER-BUSY LEARNING MATERIALS CENTER The Learning Materials Center also known as the LMC, is a very important place at South Dearborn High School. The students to the left are very helpful in the operation of the LMC. The duties of these students consist of many different tasks. Such as delivering audio-visual equipment that belongs to the school, carding, and shelving books, performing graphical work and serving as darkroom technicians. There are also gen- eral housekeeping chores that come along with the tasks of the LMC. These are just some of the things that these aides do to help the people in the LMC and also their fellow students. These students are a very important aspect of the LMC. They help the LMC to be a better place to learn and also make it fun! 39 The Fast Lane Class Once upon a time there w a group of students who devoted their classroom time to putting together their memories of the kingdom. This small group is known as the infamous ‘‘Journalism Staff.” Which means in this modern era that the group not only puts together this wonderful yearbook but also had the sole responsi- bility of the “Knight Times.” This fairy tale has a happy ending because the staff enjoyed creating these two periodicals for you. Top Right: “Even if it is true you shouldn’t tell Allison. Above: Amie working hard to achieve her goal. Above Right: Reunion of the CRAZIES! Right: Pictures! Pictures! Every- where!! Beginning in the fall of the school year eligible junior and senior students will be selected and inducted in the autumn of the year. Students will be eligible for induction into the South Dearborn chapter of National Honor Society if they meet the following requirements: Scholarship—each candidate must maintain a grade point average of 3.3 (B-h) or better. Service—Each student must be involved in at least three service projects in or out of school. Leadership—Each candidate must belong to and exhibit leadership qualities in at least one school organization. Character—Each candidate must maintain high standards of personal character. This quality should be shown in the students’s integrity, positive attitude, cooperation, and ethics. Each student that is eligible on the basis of scholarship will be asked to submit a student activity form to the faculty council. These stu- dents names will be given to all the faculty members for evaluation based on the other three criteria. The candidates who receive a majority vote of the council will be inducted in the National Honor Society Chapter. Achieving Excellence Top Left: Past inductees in the National Honor Society. The development of these skills may help when working on larger, more complex projects in the future. Those in Honors Biology are required to enter a project and those in other science classes are encouraged to partici- pate. Judges for the Science Fair are generally teachers and professionals from the communi- ty. Local businesses and organizations con- tribute to support the Science Fair and each participant is rewarded with a ribbon. The 1987 winners are: Physical and Chemi- cal Sciences-Mark Vogelgesang, first; and Bill Hartwell, second. Medicine, Health, and Mi- crobiology-Michael Berry, first; and Jenny Robinson, second. Botany-Michael Graver, first; and Beth Belew, second. Zoology-Amy March, first; and Billie Jo Whipple, second. Earth, Space, and Environmental Sciences- Tara Macdonald, first; and Royce Heim, sec- ond. 42 Over Seas Teen Friends The Foreign Exchange program at South Dear- born could be considered one of the most beneficial programs of the school. It adds much international flavor to the atmosphere. Through the program, many of the students of South Dearborn learn about the lives and activities of students their own age in foreign countries. At the same time, the foreign ex- change students are learning what life is like as an American teen-ager. As an exchange student, the teens are introduced to the aspects of American life that we commonly take for granted. They are introduced to American customs, holidays, landmarks, and for a year they take on a new way of life. These students show their courageousness by moving to a different country, moving in with a host family, making new friends, and in many cases, speaking a different language. South Dearborn is fortunate to have these students among us to share their culture. Hopefully, each year we can become better acquainted with the var- ious customs around the world. FABULOUS FORENSIC FOLLIES The South Dearborn Speech Team is rapidly becoming more popular and more successful. Not only has mem- bership increased, but the team is be- ginning to accomplish much more. During the 1986-1987 school year, the team participated in competitions at schools such as Connersville, Cen- terville, and various schools in Indian- apolis. They also made it all the way to the Indiana State Finals in the Dramatic Dub category with Gary Harris and Xenia Jones. The group mainly works with the oral interpre- tation of previously written materials, however Lisa Young wrote one of her own speeches. Under the direction of Mr. Todd Simms, this group of tal- ented students have shown what hard work and practice can accomplish. Pictured at left are: Jan DeLay, Gary Harris, Kristi Anderson, Lisa Young, Larry Gabbard, Alisa Hall, Xenia Jones, Leslie Filter, Mr. Simms, and Kristi Berry. 43 Humanities: The Art of Language and History To succeed, one of the most important sub- jects that must be conquered by students is English. At South Dearborn, the task should not be extremely difficult due to the well quali- fied staff which makes up our English depart- ment. The staff consists of Mrs. Mary Jane Jewett, Mrs. Patty Rullman, Mr. Todd Simms, Mr. Bill Snyder, Mrs. Jennifer Tucker, and Mr. David Worland. The depart- ment is headed by Mr. Larry Kinnett. Each year these teachers cover topics such as gram- mar, speech, composition, and literature. Since it is necessary to complete three years of English at South Dearborn to graduate, each student should be well-developed and know- lcdgable in our native language. The Social Studies depart- ment is comprised of five teach- ers who cover a wide range of topics. The curriculum in- cludes: U.S. History, World History, Federal Government, Psychology, State and Local, Geography, Economics, Soci- ology, and Soviet History. The department is headed by Mr. Donald Karasek. The teaching staff also includes: Mr. Gary Lyon, Mr. Harley Heim, Mr. Charles Thomas, and Mr. Ni- cholas Redden. The depart- ment works to acquaint stu- dents with the knowledge and understanding of the country, the government, the past, and a better understanding of their lives. 44 Science Department Works Themselves to the Bone The Science department at South Dearborn provides the student body with an ex- tensive science program which can provide each stu- dent with great knowledge in all scientific areas. Courses offered are: General Science, General and Honors Biol- ogy, Botany, Zoology, Hu- man Anatomy Physiol- ogy, Microbiology Lab Techniques, Environmental Science, Earth Space Sci- ence, Physical Science, Chemistry I and II, Physics, and Advanced Biology. Mrs. Linda Hall is the head of the department. Staff members include: Mrs. Nancy Glass- burn, Mr. Merrill Hutchin- son, Mr. Dennis Dilts, Mr. Gary Hall, Mr. William Clifton, and Mr. Paul Tis- kus. Math Wizards of the Math Department Math is a subject which touches the lives of everyone each day. The Mathematics Department at South Dearborn High School consists of dedicated teachers who are willing to teach all aspects of math to their students. Mrs. Marilyn Moeller heads the math department with Mr. Larry Horn- bach, Mr. Stewart Hall, Mrs. Linda Hof- mann, Mr. William Clifton, and Mrs. Ja- nice Smith also on the staff. Courses taught include: Basic Math, General Math I, Gen- eral Math II, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Ge- ometry, Algebra II, Introduction to Com- puter Programming, Computer I, Computer II, Computer III and IV, Math Analysis, and an independent study pro- gram Calculus. 45 • • • Business-Wise South Dearborn's Business department consists of many fine teachers willing to expand the knowledge of high school students about business. Courses include: Introduction to Business, Accounting I, Ac- counting II, Typing I, Typing II, Shorthand, Business Math, Business Management, Busi- ness Law, Office Machines and Office Procedures, Personal Typing, and Occupational De- velopment. These classes help to educate the students about business operations in the office and business world. The teach- ers responsible for this business education are: Mr. Henry Ahaus, Mr. Seth Congdon, Ms. Nancy Gerber, Ms. Rebecca Helms, and Mrs. Brenda Myers, who is the department head. Bringing Our Cultures Closer Together By learning a new language, we become capable of communicating with people of various nationalities. It helps to close the gap between two people, two neighbor- hoods, or two countries. Not only can we then understand other people, but we can better understand various songs and movies which may choose to use some words or sayings from a foreign language. The South Dearborn Foreign Language department can help students merely learn the basics of Spanish or German, or they can help stu- dents master the languages. The Foreign Language department consists of depart- ment head Ms. Joyce Draut, Mr. Gary Lyon, and Mr. Mark Wilhelm. Ms. Draut and Mr. Lyon teach Spanish, while Mr. Wilhelm teaches German. Taking a foreign language is not required, however it offers much insight to other cultures. Also, many colleges want incoming students to have taken at least two years of a foreign lan- guage. 46 The Artistic Leaders of America The Art Department at South Dearborn offers a variety of classes. The areas cover ideas involv- ing drawing, sketching, painting and even the more difficult field of pottery. The very basic to the most advanced is taught in these classes, depending upon your own inter- est. This class gives a student the opportunity to create things and to have fun in doing so. Also, if the student is planning a career in the Art field, this would be a good department to consider. “Home Ec. Sweet Home Ec.” The Home Ec. Department at South Dearborn teaches students the skills in- volved in cooking, sewing, and they also learn other aspects of Home Economics. This class was always considered by the female of South Dearborn, but it teaches males also, who wish to learn about human relationships. The Home Ec. class deals with more than just cooking. It also puts the stu- dents in real life situations, such as plan- ning a wedding, and discovering new emotions and feelings. 47 Building for the Future South Dearborn has a very productive Industrial Educa- tion department. This depart- ment offers many different classes. They include: Basic Mechanical Drawing, Basic Woodworking, Technical Drawing I, Architectural Drawing, Woodworking II, Ba- sic Power, Basic Electricity, Metals, Advanced Metals, Residential Wiring, and three independent study programs that require permission in order to be taken. Although there arc only three teachers in the In- dustrial Arts Department they manage to handle these classes very well. These teachers are Mr. Mike Scudder, Mr. Foster Harris, and Mrs. Patricia Meadlock. S. D. is “Learning to Grow” Mr. Walter Ellison is the man in charge of South Dear- born’s Vocational Agriculture Department. This department offers a variety of classes. These include the following: Voca- tional Agri-Business Class, In- troduction to Horticulture, Field Crops and Soil Science, Landscaping and Turf Man- agement, Forestry and Green- house Management and Pro- duction. Just like the other areas here at South Dearborn there is much to learn from this depart- ment. Students that are inter- ested in a career in farming or of that nature should consider one of these classes. 48 Basis of Educational Values South Dearborn has a very special program set up to help those students who have a learning disability. This depart- ment covers a wide range of to- pics. These involve language, reading, occupational skills, and these SIVS program. All of these programs circle around the same objective. This objec- tive is to help the students be- come more productive in a soci- ety where they can be useful citizens. Education for and by the Physical The Physical Education De- partment and Health Depart- ment here at South Dearborn are very popular courses. Since both classes are required these departments have grown very much. P.E., under the director of Mr. Lloyd Nowlin and Ms. Pam Merrill, keep the students busy with Marine Physical Fit- ness and many other sports re- lated activities. Health Educa- tion is the other half of the 9 wks. course. Mr. Steve Garrett and Mr. Dennis Dilts are in charge of this department. These two offer a great deal of knowledge to the students. The special area offered to the students is the Aquatics. This course is designed to teach the students the basics of swim- ming under the direction of Mr. Robert Kelsik, this too is a very productive course. 49 South Dearborn High School Top Left: Harley Heim often gets molested in class. GOVERNMENT S.D.’s government, the student government, is one of the most successful organizations here at South Dearborn. Mrs. Green, a teacher here at South Dearborn, sponsors the student gov- ernment and helps the students in their job of im- proving our school and it’s problems. The student govern- ment officers are from left: Vice President: Bruce Lane, Treasurer: Karla Scott; Secretary: Sheila Townsend; President: Jeff Berniger. RULING BODY OF STUDENTS Student govern- ment members are: Bonnie Berninger, Holly Fairman, Mi- chelle French, Larry Gabbard, Krista Gesler, Steve Gerke, Angie Hel- ton, Jana Mericle, Glenn Miller, Mary Phister, Jenny Rob- inson, Angie Rol- lins, Tammi Waite, and Scott Petty. 54 Chess Team: Check Mating the Competition Throughout the short history of South Dearborn High School, the chess team has been very productive in both wins for our school pride and the influence it has had on the analytical thinking process of the various students that have participated. Mr. Paul Tiskus took over the helm of the chess team from Mr. Miller and continued the interest and merit the club has maintained. Academic Excellence Abounds at S.D.H.S. The Science Team of Steve Gerke, Ron Mul- ford, and Doug Ruter won first place honors in the Hoosier Academic Super Bowl held at Decatur Central High School, In- dianapolis last Saturday. The regional level com- petition was held at South Dearborn High School on April 23 where the team’s score was high enough to qualify them as one of our four classes based on total school enrollment. There were 100 schools compet- ing in this class. This is the first year for this statewide competition which is sponsored by the Indiana Congress on Edu- cation and funded by Lil- ly Endowment, Inc. “What a super year” is a common expression for anyone involved in the “It's Academic Team.” The team sponsored by Larry Hornbach has to be con- sidered one of the best in the school’s history. Their team strength lay in the areas of Math and Science while being very productive in the other educational areas. In fact, the team ranked very high in the conference and a part of the team won the state science competition in their respective class. South Dearborn is very proud of their academic success and next year looks to be even bet- ter. Stu- dents were given a spelling test and those with the most correct participated in the two competitions. South Dearborn won the Regional competition that was held here at South Dearborn. The five highest scoring teams that competed in the Region- al went on to the State com- petition held in Brownsburg. S.D. ended up finishing fifth at State. DAR: Good Citizen Award Glenn Miller, senior at South Dear- born, has been selected to receive the 1986-87 Good Citizen Award. Sponsored by the Colonel Archibald Lochry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the contest is open to all senior girls and boys in all accredited high schools. The selected student must possess outstanding quali- ties in dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Glenn is the President of the senior class, a member of National Honor Soci- ety, Band, EKO and Math Club. Glenn’s parents are Mr. and Mrs. George Miller, Cole Lane, Aurora. 57 Future Farmers at S.D. One group of youth at South Dearborn are those that have a great interest in agriculture and Fields that are related to agriculture. These students are the Fu- ture Farmers of America. The students involved in this club are interested in careers with agriculture. Walter Ellison is the sponsor of Fu- ture Farmers of America. FFA’s events for this year will be to attend the State convention at Purdue and they have an annual trip to Louisville for the farm ma- chinery show and tractor pull. They also attend the State Fair as a group. Students Against Drunk Driving A growing organization up here at South Dearborn this year is SADD, Students Against Drunk Driving. The new group is hoping to get more underclassmen in- volved and to help lessen drunk driving accidents among the teenagers. The group has discussions, Films and sometimes guest speak- ers. They hope to start meet- ing with other schools that have SADD also. If your in- terested in what their trying to accomplish, join SADD. 58 Skill + Ability = Math Club nrn r wr :sr Many students at South Dearborn have realized they need more skills in the math area in or- der to succeed in the field of math. The Math Club is an or- ganization that al- lows students to compete in math tests that are evalu- ated on a National level. The club has always done well in these tests and com- petitions against other area schools. Mr. Larry Horn- bach is the sponsor of the Math Club. UNIQUE CONCOCTION Another interesting club we have is the Science Club. The students involved learn more about Science through group involvement. They meet twice a month and their major project is the Science Fair and the projects in- volved are rated on a nation- al level. If you are interested in Science, a good place for you would be in the Science Club. 59 S.D.’s Future Business Leaders The business world is part of everyone’s life today. Any ca- reer is related to business in some way or another. One large group are those involved in an organization that teaches the concepts and the knowledge needed to be involved and suc- cessful in the business world to- day. Future Business Leaders of America represent this group up here at South Dearborn. Miss Helms is the sponsor of this group. One of the main highlights of the year is the “Day in the of- fice.” Other events the club looks forward to are business competitions and State Leader- ship conferences. AT HOME AT S.D. One of the most impor- tant factors for happy American family life is the home. Most American families are much hap- pier. The Future Home- makers of America is an organization that is very helpful in learning more about the home and to in- form young people in hopes of starting “happy homes.” Mrs. Kathy Green is the sponsor of Future Homemakers of America. 60 DEUTSCHE VERIEN One of the largest organizations at South Dearborn unknown to most of us is the Ger- man Club. They not only go around talking what we as English speaking people con- sider gibberish (Ger- man language) but are provided with cultural environment tech- niques. The sponsor of the German Club is Mr. Mark Wilhelm. One of this years highlights will be the beginning of a German Honor Society—Delta Epsilon Phi. Students must have a 3.6 grade point average in Ger- man and a 3.0 grade point average overall. Now We Know Where Michelangelo Started Another interesting club held at South Dearborn is the Art Club. The Art Club is a chance for students to learn new things and work with things they might not have had the chance to. The main purpose of the club is to expand artistic experiences that could not take place in a classroom. The club does art-related projects to earn money for a field trip taken at the end of the year. Mr. Milt Masing is the sponsor of the Art Club. 61 F.C.A.: Friendship and Dedication NEVER A CLOUDY DAY ... Fellowship of Christian Athletes is an organization sponsored by Mr. Dennis Dilts that has been organized to bring athletes, trainers, coaches, and all others involved in athletics together in the name of Jesus Christ. This club is involved in many activities throughout the year. These include the coat check at every home basketball game, visiting dif- ferent churches in the area, visiting and sending cards to sick people and shut ins. This is truly a worthwhile group that promotes a very healthy and positive Christian attitude to all who have had any contact with them. The Sunshine Society is an organization that promotes the ideas of caring, sharing, and happiness to all around them. This club’s tasks include fund raising activities, visiting the sick and the elderly, and the Ideal Lady Tea. This is where every member chooses their “Ideal Lady” and at this Tea they exchange gifts and ideas. This promotes a positive atti- tude and helps the members to mature. Ms. Joyce Draut is the leader of this group and she gives the perfect model of what the Ideal Lady should be. The entire con- cept of this group is to promote understanding and communica- tion skills to all concerned. The boys’ side of the intramural program was organized by Harley Heim. Any where from 50 to 80 boys participate in the bas- ketball competition. The boys are allowed to choose their own teams and give each team a name that they feel describes their team in the most suitable fashion. It’s hard to believe some of the names these young men come up with!! Harley Heim selected the winners ac- cording to their win lose record. At the end of the season the winning team received trophies for their winning effort. Pictured at left are the boys that won this year’s competition. Bottom Row: Scott Hummel, Brian Ickenroth, Sonny Lynn. Second Row: Bobby Shinkle and George Hurd. Top: Jim Harland. Not Pictured: Al- lan Lamb. Intramurals: A Way to Relax. The girls of South Dearborn had the chance to belong to a team that played volleyball in the intramural program. Pam Merrill organized this effort to promote the idea of working to- gether and trying to combine forces in such a way to achieve a common goal. This year’s teams showed excellent spirit and at- tendance as they all tried to have the winning team. The winning team this year received free food coupons from Frisches. The team members are pictured at left. Seated: Sara Rumsey, Cindy Gilbert, and Christy Day. The change of envi- ronments was hard to ad- just to at first, but with the help of teachers and friends they had their schedules mastered in no time at all. The class officers have done many things to help out the class in their funds for future use. Their hard work was greatly appreci- ated by all their fellow classmates. This is exactly what a graduation means to the thou- sands of young high schoolers across the United States. Here at South Dearborn it naturally touches closer to the heart. Even though many tears and many lumps in the old throat will appear ev- eryone knows the importance of the event for the future of these young adults. In this society a high school di- ploma is essential for the job market and probably most important this diploma gives the former student an achievement that can never be taken away. The end, but a new beginning that is going to play a major role in the rest of their lives. Go forth and be proud of what you have accomplished and look forward to what you have left to accom- plish. 116 if ' 5 The friends that are lost across the miles as your lives go on will be replaced with the warm lingering memories of the high school years. These pictures of the last group meeting are here for you and to help those memories stay fresh in your minds forever. 118 119 SENIOR MEMORIES: Loving and Warm Combinations Forever SPIRITS OF THE HILLTOP CASTLE What would school be without sports? And what would sports be without cheerleaders? To say the least, it would be boring. This year’s cheerleaders did a great job of bringing life into the crowd. The girls spent hours in front of hundreds of fans, getting them into the action, while the guys tried everthing from gymnastics to tricycle riding to get the fans up and cheering! The SDHS cheerleaders definitely deserve our praise for going out on all of those cold and windy nights and cheering our teams on to victory. They also deserve our thanks for mak- ing this another successful year of sports. Front Row (L to R): Lysa Fischer, Amy McFelea, Aimec Buck. Back Row (L to R): Tammi Waite, Anje Miller. Who deserves more credit for bringing school spirit to South Dearborn than the Pep Club? And who deserves more credit for livening up our ballgames than that famous Dragon? Pep Club, along with the Dragon’s assistance, was responsible for helping the cheerleaders bring the fans to life. Why else would they have dressed up from head to toe in red, white, and blue, always ready to scream and cheer our teams on to victory? The Pep Club and Dragon helped make this another great year. From the Pep Club’s signs and decorations to the Dragon’s greetings and antics at the ballgames, South Dearborn’s walls were once again filled with school spirit. The 1986 football team can definitely be described as deter- mined and they also took pride in the fact that they always tried to strive for excellence throughout the season. Though success may not have always been present on the field, the individual players were able to succeed in their ow n minds. They were all winners in one way or another. Whether it be in the fact that they achieved personal goals or in the fact that they helped achieve team goals, they all won. When the 1986 football season ended, it left behind it many memories. Their record does not reflect their desire and determination. The coaches Mr. Nowlin and Mr. Garrett pressed fundamentals. A FOOTBALL FAIRYTALE The annual football Homecoming was changed slightly this year. Inclement weather forced the revealing of the royalty to be during the dance instead of halftime. Freshman candidates were Krista Geisler and Ty Brown, Sophomore candidates Sue Haverkos and Jeff Stratman, Junior candi- dates Jason Cummins and Patty Engle, Senior candidates Brad Tyler, Kurt Cheek, Todd Spaulding, Mary Pfistcr, Angie Lee and Tawnya Conley. Winners were Queen Angie Lee, King Kurt Cheek, Princess Sue Haverkos, and Prince Jason Cummins. The night was a fairytale for all involved and all watching. Congratulations! Volleyball Alive and Well at SD!! Volleyball has become one of the more popular sports at South Dearborn. Over the short history of the school volleyball has secured a strong foothold on the young ladies that enter the sports world for the many benefits that it offers. Coach Pam Merrill has always been the leader of the spiking pack and has created a program that allows for many different positive effects to occur. This season was no different as the Lady Volleyball Knights went a setting. The season was highlighted with strong play and team spirit which helps in the team play category. There is a down side to the season and that comes in the loss of six outstanding seniors. They will be sore- ly missed as the young leaders will try and replace the drive and desire that these six maintained. Good luck for next year and remember to work hard over the summer for preparation for the up- coming season. Top left: Somebody pinch me, I think I’m dreaming! The linksters placed fifth in the E.I.A.C. and sixth in the sec- tional with Renee qualifying for the re- gionals. During the few short years that the boys’ Cross Country program has existed, South Dearborn has become known as a perennial power in the area. This year, the 1986-87 team continued the winning tradition, compiling a 64-23 recorrd, including a 9-1 dual meet record, East Cen- tral Invitational Champs, EIAC champs, Derborn Ohio Invitational runner-up, fourth place finishes at both sectional and regional, and qualifying for their fifth semi-state appearance. Not only were there many team accomplishments, but individual achievements as will. Senior Larry Tibbs, a three-year letter winner, was named most valuable runner. Two-year letter winners, seniors George Hurd and Chris Piche, were co-captains. Junior Steven Gerke received the mental attitude award, while Junior Bill Belew was named most improved. Most improved first year was Shane Godby. Bill Hartwell, David Kelly, Scott Weiss and Brad Duerstock all were letter winners and show much talent and promise for the future. South Dearborn Cross Country has indeed become a force in the area. Their success can be attributed to their coach, Mark Wilhelm, and also their determination to better and faster runners. 138 Clockwise, from bottom left; Chris and George just “loved” to do situps. Shane specialized in the Pee Wee Herman run. Before a race, the team participated in a relaxing game of “Duck, duck, goose. Ike shows his winning form. Bill kicks it in at the finish. South Dearborn runners always led the pack. 139 TOUGH LADY KNIGHTS The 1986-87 Girls Cross Country team not only ran well this year, they dominated. Coached by Mr. Wilhelm, 8 young ladies started off on a 14- week journey through grueling practices and tough meets, pulled muscles and shin splints, but all of the hard work they put in and the pain they went through definitely paid off in the long run. The team captured three in- vitational titles, the Dearborn Ohio county Title, EIAC, and sectional, along with an eighth place finish at regional, the best ever for South Dear- born. Individual achievements were, Ronna Rabius, Most Valuable; Stacey Peterson, Mental Attitude; Christy Tibbs, Most Improved; and Lori Gentry, Most Improved first year. The girl’s cross country pro- gram, which before had strug- gled to have enough runners to compete as a team, has now be- come a force in our area. And with all of the promising talent, the future looks bright for SD. A perfect regular season, Ripley County Tourney champs, EIAC Champs, Sectional winners for the sixth consecutive year, and a sixth place ranking were just a few highlights of the season. But the end came in a heart-breaking loss to seventh-ranked Seymour in the regional finals. The Lady Knights, although they fell short of their expectations, received the admiration of the community. Through hard work and dedication, they earned the recognition of “Team of the Week” from Channel 9, and regular coverage by Channel 5. The team’s 23-1 record, the second best in South Dearborn history, carries on the winning tradition in girl’s basketball at South Dearborn. 142 Young Lady Knights—Bright Future 144 The Lady Knights’ Basketball Pro- gram has been one of the best in the state in the 1980’s. To have this con- tinued success the Freshman and Re- serve levels have to maintain a sense of excellence themselves. Once again Coach Lloyd Nowlin led these two levels to another highly successful season. This fine work will help promote the further achieve- ments of the future Lady Knights. This was the year for the S.D. basketball team to have one of those years. After losing a large num- ber of talented athletes last year, the inexperi- enced Knights were going to try to hold their own against a tough schedule. During a large portion of the season the varsity squad played quite well being in almost every game; winning or losing by the smallest of mar- gins. The sectional was a disappointment, but we know this will allow Coach Worland to regroup his troops and bring that sectional championship back where it belongs in the castle of the Knights. One of the highlights of the year is always the Basketball Homecoming in which a queen and king along with an underclass princess and prince are chosen. The candidates this year are as follows: Freshman-Cindy Morris and Andy Terril; Sophomore-Shyra Crider and Garry Groh; Junior-Bruce Murray and Crystal Elam. These were the underclass candidates for the princess and prince. The honored winners were Juniors Crystal Elam and Bruce Murray. Congratulations!! Senior Candidates were Christie Hummel escorted by Brad Tyler; Lysa Fischer escorted by Kelly Hinkle; and Amy McFelea escorted by Ron Mulford. The voting was very close this year, but there is always a winner. This year the queen was the beautiful (you can tell she was on the yearbook staff) Christie Hummel and the king was the dashing Ron Mulford. Congratulations to all the participants as they are all winners in their own right. RESERVE STRENGTH Future Players It is almost impossible to run a winning program at the varsity level unless one can maintain a reserve program that teaches the basics and the other skills that are needed to develop young talent with potential into consistent varsity players that are productive enough to win during the long grueling season. This is exactly what this year’s reserve team accomplished. Even though the win loss record was not that great the team still progressed in such a manner that these athletes will one day soon be the varsity winners of the future. Congratulations to Coach Garrett and his players for a fine season. 148 First row, left to right: Don Hensley, Dave Jordan (quit team after picture was taken and before season started) Toby Kelly, Joey Smith, Todd Whitson, Kevin Burress, Gordon Perkins, Mark Vogelgesang. After a slow start for Coach Chuck Thomas’ freshman crew, they quickly gained momentum and accomplished many of the goals that they had in mind in the beginning of the season. The team as a whole finished above the .500% win loss mark and gained the vast experience needed to be able to conquer the reserve level for next year. Coach Thomas felt this group has a lot of potential and with continued hard work should be able to progress through the ranks of the South Dearborn basketball program. 149 im Top Wrestling Season in History Front Row: Managers-Xenia Jones, Angie Jewitt, and Missy Lusby. 2nd Row: J.B. Coach Congdon and the boys worked very hard to accomplish what no other wrestling team had ever done. The list of their achievements arc endless, but we will try to give as many as possible. They were 16-1 in dual meets losing only to previous Kentucky state champ Simon Kenton. They also won the sectional for the first time and qualified nine for the regional which they did not win, but finished high in the rankings of the regional. The next step was the Semi-State in which six wrestlers continued the season with J.B. Bart- lett, Glen Burris, and John Hoskins all quali- fying for first ever State contenders. Middle: Coach Hutchinson, Brad Duerstock, Steve Gerke, John Althoff, Gary Vogelsang. Back: Tracy Anderson, Eric Kuchling, Mike Berry, Matt Hummel. The boys swim team has completed their third undefeated season in a row for the 1986-1987 school year. They have a record of 37-0 in dual meets, they have won five straight E.I.A.C. championships, they finished second in their Sectional at Columbus North, and they are the only team to have won the South Dearborn invitational. Each boy on the team has certain events that are their specialty. Bob Sherman and T.J. Lewis are the best with the breast stroke. Jerry Courter, Scott Hummel, Steve Gerke, John Althoff, and Tracy Anderson specialize in the free style events. Mike Page and Brad Duerstock compete in the butterfly and Matt Hummel is a diver. Six of these swimmers qualified to go to state competition: Jerry Courter, Bob Sherman, T.J. Lewis, Gary Vogelsang, Steve Gerke, and Brad Duer- stock. Congratulations guys!!! 153 Top left: Gary and the gang anxiously await a little “splish splash”. Above: Steve and Tracy show off that infamous hair style and physic that made the swim team famous. She begins their season in February with conditioning which includes running and lifting weights. In March and April the girls hit the courts. Coach Wilhelm says that a big factor about the team is that they are a young team. Her entire varsity team is made up of sophomores and the reserve is made up of two juniors and freshman. They are prictured at the right in no specific order: Stephanie Emery, Gloria Mill- er, Amy Helton, Beth Slayback, Denise Hop- kins, Sue Haverkos, Angie Helton, Diane Ull- rich, and Julie Karp make up the varsity team and also pictured arc the reserve players: Sher- ry Smithers, Krista Geisler, Lori Gentry, Amy Richardson, Cyndi Morris, Cindy Cunning- ham, Michelle Bruce, Ray Lozier, and Leslie Votaw. This year the tennis team placed second in Conference and their main goal for next year is to beat Greensburg, who placed first in Con- ference this year. Good luck next year girls!!! Above: Denise forgot her South Dearborn team sunglasses. Right: Coach Wilhelm holds back a sneeze in pre-game warm up. Top left: Nothing like getting “high” on tennis. Mid left: Beth and Denise await the serve. Left: The girls are ready while Gloria and Stephanie say a little prayer. Top right: Gloria is so nice she is offering her opponent her own raquet. Second Row (L-R): Brad Ickenroth, Nick Wilson, Mike Goodpastcr, Danny Hughes, Coach Don Karasek. Third Row (L-R): Doug Powell, Todd Russell, Gary Vgelgesang, Earl Allman, Chris Rumscy. Tennis anyone is a new cry at South Dearborn with the success of this year’s boys tennis team. The record was still not all that great but considering the poor re- cord over the last few years things are start- ing to shine for the boys’ program. This year’s team won 4 dual matches which was the first wins in three years and the best record since 1980. Coach Don Kar- asek felt very pleased with the outcome of the season considering where these boys started in the beginning of the season. The team also gave an excellent showing in the sectional by finishing fifth overall. The award winners were Mike Goodpas- ter with the Toughness Award, Earl All- man with Most Valuable Player Award, and Todd Langdon with Most Improved. 158 Top Left: Todd looks good even without socks. Top Right: Todd and his coach came to an understanding about where he was going to play. Above Left: The boys were SOOOOOOO PROUD over their awards. Far Left: Dave shows some of his competitive spirit. Above: A common sight: PURE EXHAUSTION!!! Left: Danny shows that winning form. S.D. Girls’ Track: Few, Young, and Talented First Row (L to R): Tara McDonald, Tamya Drew, Angie Lewis, Sue Pettit, Amy March, Julie Anderson, and Stephanie Rullman. Second Row (L to R): Rhonda Mulford, Ronna Castellucio, Christy Tibbs, Denise Shell, Marcy Conley, Diann Kitchell, Kelly Elder, Alisa Barry, Angela Schmaltz, and Coach Mark Wilhelm. The definition of a true rebuilding year has to center around what the 1986-87 Girls’ Track Team was all about. With an abundance of young talent, but no seniors the track team did surprisingly well under the instruction of Coach Wilhelm. The accomplishments were plentiful considering the circum- stances. Their record ended up at 27 wins and 8 losses. They also won three different invitationals, had six girls from the sectional to go to regional, and had a strong performance in the confer- ence tournament. Remembering all this was done with no seniors and only 15 underclassmen which is considered very small for a high school team. An excellent job and effort by all concerned and a sign of a bright future lies in the sights of the years to come. With contin- ued hard work and dedication the Lady Knights track team is on a verge of a dynasty. y Top Left: Denise does her usual by finishing first. Top Right: Sue and Amy have that freshman glow that sets them apart. Mid Left: Marcy strides for another victory. Above: S.D. version of the Bobbsey Twins. Far Left: Steph, a vision of loveliness. First Row (L to R): Dave Kelly, Calen Burris, Brian Ickenroth, Todd Russell, Larry Tibbs, Mike Meucci, Shane Godby, Mike Emery, Steve Gerke, and Toby Kelly. Second Row (L to R): Brad Deaton, Scott Weiss, John Baker, Mark Vogelesang, Fred Reohncr, Tony Benning, Jim Harland, Shawn Vinson, Chad Lehner. Third Row (L to R): Wayne Sandusky, Derek Schneider, Gary Hensley, Shawn Snyder, Chris Hinkle, Andy Terrill, Bill Hartwell, Pat McGraw, Dave Lewis. Top Row: Coach Mark Wilhelm, Manager Dan Gilvin, and Coach Gary Hall. This one of those teams that every coach, athlete, and school dreams of as far as being successful and representing the school in a proud manner. This is a good description of the 1987 Boys’ Track Team. The team and its members were one of the if not the most successful track teams in the school’s history. They ended up the sea- son with 30 wins and 5 losses. Records were also broken by Brian Ick- enroth in the 400 meter dash, Jim Harland in the 300 meter hurdles, and Pat McGraw, Chad Lehner, Jim Harland, and Fred Reohner all in the 400 meter relay. An excellent example of hard work pay- ing off to produce a winning situation. Top Left: Coach Hall talks over some last minute instruction to half of his record breaking relay team. Top Middle: Dave “Stud” Lewis heaves the shot to his limit. Top Right: Brian prepares for another blue ribbon. Above Left: Scott and Larry pace themselves for the last minute push. Above: Larry warms up for his favorite event. Left: Todd is amazed at Chad’s ability to chew on his knee. 163 A New Sport With a Bright Future: GIRLS SOFTBALL Back Row (1 to r): Coach Seth Congdon, Marla Whiteford, Sara Ditmcr, Missy Leptak, Kathy Davis, Michelle Neff, Angie Meyer, Carrie Combs, Kelly Schwier, Scorer Cheryl Schuman, Front Row (1 to r): Georgia Hostetler, Tara Moehring, Beth Bclcw, Kim Conley, Shari Caudill, Lysa Fischer, Dana Peterson, Lee Ann Bessler, Not Pic- tured Mgt. Dawn Bower. In its first year of existence the South Dearborn Girls Fast Pitch Softball Team has shown great spirit and strength. They have had a very impressive year winning over half their games. This figure is not only impressive because it is the first year for this sport, but also because only a couple of these girls have ever played fast pitch softball in their entire lives. Therefore, the coaching combination of Mr. Congdon and Mr. Nowlin got together to teach these young ladies just what it takes to become a successful team. The experience these girls gained and the fun they had to- gether is sure to make fast pitch softball a long lasting tradition at South Dearborn. These girls are trend setters. With the sea- son they had this year, the future looks bright and full of endless possibilities. 164 Top Left: Lee Ann is always prepared to play ball. Top Right: Lisa and Dana show us their positive attitudes. Middle Left: The team discusses the next inning. Middle Right: Coach Congdon looks upon his team with pride. Left: Michelle shows us the great body she gained from softball. 165 Even after losing many key players this year, the South Dearborn Golf Team is giving it their all. Naturally, they have not been as successful as last year, but there has been a lot of desire to improve among the players. Coach Worland has worked many hours to improve the distance and accuracy of the boys golf strokes. It has been a year of rebuilding for the team and they look forward to many players returning next year to form an excel- lent squad. Members of this years golf team are: Pat Allan, John Hoskins, Rick Strasemeier, Bill Shelton, Jim Hughes, Scott McNinch, Earl Allman, and Doug Router. These fine young men were coached by Mr. Worland, and Mr. Thomas. fla Top Left: Scott shows us his perfected stroke. Top Center: Doug prepares to make his putt. Top Right: John is ready to tee off. Middle Left: Coach Worland relaxes, and watches the action. Middle Center: Jim walks confidently onto the green. Middle Right: Scott practices his swing. Left: Bill prepares to sink his putt. 167 Rebuilding After Dream Season The baseball team of 1986 will be remembered for many years to come. The loss of all those seniors will be remem- bered just as will, especially by those people who participated this past season in 1987. A lot of people thought that the team in 1987 would be very average and would actually have a difficult time contending with the area teams. It was no real surprise to those fans who knew that the team was better than was given credit. The remaining letter winners from last year worked hard to set examples for the younger group and the young unsung he- roes of the future played well to keep the winning tradition at S.D. alive. The team finished at the .500% win loss mark and last a heart-breaker to lose the sec- tional, but we know Coach Hornbach and the boys will be back to regain their sectional ti- tle next year. Standing: Scott Fowler, John Gossett, Brad Tyler, Chris Rumsey, Doug Powell, Garry Groh. Seated: Roger Fussneckcr, Jim Sizemore, Doug Whitaker, Mike York, and Bill Belew. Left: Scott was the pitching ace this year for the Knights. Above: Mike relaxes between pitches in the infield. 169 Sorry we didn’t get a picture of the reserve baseball team, but we at least wanted to mention them. The reserve baseball team this year was led by Jim Mallott. This year’s team record does not express their drive, hustle, deter- mination, and the great attitudes towards the game. With the instructions from Coach Mallott, the team learned the basics and fundamentals of the game that will help them gain improvement in their skills. The team constantly worked and pushed themselves to the limit in order to better their skills so they can hopefully obtain a position on the varsity team of the future. Those Special Helping Hands. The behind-the-scenes people that would be very hard to get along without are seldom heard of or seen, but are still there and need to be recognized. Pictured at left are the usherettes who escorted, directed, and smiled at fans all during the varsity basketball season. Mrs. Marlene Denmure is the sole leader of this group of young ladies. She directed the girls to their correct responsibilities and duties. The five girls who did this hectic job are at left. Standing are Laurel Billingsley, Rochelle Campbell, Kathy Banschbach, and not pictured are Jill Bubcnhofer and Lori Burgess. The other group of helping hands belong to the train- ers of South Dearborn athletic teams. Without these dedicated student trainers it would be very difficult for the coaches to operate in a smooth manner over the course of the season. Under the direction of Mr. Dennis Dilts the young wrappers learn many facets of the art of training. This includes care, detection, wrapping, maintaining, and preventing all types of athletic injur- ies. The S.D. Trainers are pictured below as follows: Standing-Mike Langdon, Tom Utter, Matt Rowlet, Mike Emery, and Dan Begley. Kneeling-Jim Mericle, Matt Hummel, Sherry Smither, and Mitch Ayler.
