Volume II KNIGHT LIFE SOUTH DEARBORN HIGH SCHOOL Aurora, Indiana We Believe! We Believe! was seen and heard over and over all during the football season. Besides being a cheer it also showed how much school spirit we had. Since believing is a very important part of sports, organiza- tions, or any activity, We Believe! soon became the theme for the entire school year. Since we had made it known that we believed in our teams and were backing them all the way, our teams accomplished much more. Believing had to happen before anyone could accomplish anything. It wasn't only needed by teams but by clubs, activities, and students. Believing was a very important part of the students’ lives. It gave students confidence, showed them others cared, gave them a feeling of success, and showed how much other people trusted them. Believing in people made them realize that they could accomplish more than they ever thought possible. Apparently, Greg needs no credit for this class. Oooh Nooo ... it’s Mr. Gill again! 8 Involves Everyone Mrs. Jewett ponders the meaning of Juniors. The Language Arts department had many different courses that the stu- dents could choose. For the under- classmen, there were three years of English and literature which were re- quired to graduate. Honors English and literature were offered for fresh- man and sophomore students. Hu- manities was available for junior stu- dents. Dramtics and Play Production, taught by Mrs. Rullman, was offered to sophomore, junior, and senior stu- dents. This department was also in charge of producing the school publi- cations, Knight Times and Knight Life. Seniors had seven different mini- courses available: speech, vocabulary, Shakespeare, mythology, discussion and debate, advanced composition, and English literature I. These senior courses were all taught by Mr. Kin nett, the department head. Mrs. Hullman guides her students on a creative journey through play production. By day a mild-mannered English teacher . .. 9 There were a few changes in the Language Arts Department this year. One was the addition of three new teachers to the faculty: Ms. Turner, Mr. Gill, and Mr. Dietrich. The second oc- curred when the Journalism classes expanded from two to four classes. The newspaper, Knight Times, had two classes, one to write the articles and another to produce the paper. Mr. Showalter advised both classes. Jour- nalism II also expanded to produce our yearbook. Mr. Dietrich supervised the annual staff. Mr. Dietrich experiences (he frustrations of being Kook amt Becky type the very words you ore reading- new to the department. 10 Newspaper room ... a busy place. One of Mr. Kinnctt's many recitations. Mr. K. gets the spirit. Whether it he underclassmen faking English and literature or a senior tak- ing mini-courses or just having one’s name in the yearbook or newspaper proved that each student had some in- volvement with the Language Arts De- partment. The teachers of this department taught the students creativity in writ- ing. grammar, speech, and the use of research which all helped in the future and in other classes. This department also sponsored the Drama Club. For the first time, college courses were offered at this school Many of the seniors took advantage of the English courses: English Composition and speech from Purdue University. Mr. Kinnett taught the classes. 11 rare sight ... a whole cl ass studying. SPANISH CLASS Sehorita Draut teaches four levels of Spanish. What! Another verb tense! La maestra. Miss Draut. contemplates the day's Three, Two. One ... Blast off! events. This post year, the Spanish II and III classes attended a Spanish flamenco performance in Cincinnati. Then after- wards, the classes ate at a Spanish restaurant. Ms. Draut said that what the first year students liked best was the break- ing of a pinata at Christmas time. Students were first taught vocabu- lary and sentence structure. As they furthered their Spanish education they learned the fluency of speaking and the Spanish Culture. The students’ learning was enlight- ened by a machine which allowed the student to talk independently with the teacher, while others listened to an ex- ercise tape. Ms. Draut hoped to have more trips and special guests. 12 GERMAN CLASS There is one in every crowd. Mr. Wilhelm surveys his class. A teachers work is never done. As the students walked in school on the first day many were surprised to see a new German teacher, Mr. Mark Wilhelm. Besides teaching German I, German II, civics, and geography, Mr. Wilhelm was assistant coach for hoys’ freshman basketball, cross country, and track teams. He also was the junior class sponsor. Some German students and other interested students were greatly enriched over spring break by taking a trip to Germany and Austria. Some of the cities visited were Mu- nich, Salzburg, and Innsbruck. Some of the sites seen were Olympic village, the Royal Castle of Neuschwanstein, and the famous salt mines of Salzburg. Mr. Wilhelm hoped to teach German III next year. 13 Hi! My name is Mark Wilhelm and I'd like to he your German teacher. Social Mr. Hubbartt is head of the class as well as the department. Mr. Hubbartt takes a now outlook on the juniors. Coroner Randy Lothridge speaks to crime class. Mr. Heim at his prime. New to the faculty this year in the Social Studies department was Mr. Wilson. He taught such courses as: U.S. History to the juniors, and psy- chology, personality theory, and be- havior disorders to the seniors. He was in charge of the hoys’ intra-mural teams, and helped coach the football and the boys track teams. As head of the department, Mr. Hub- bartt said, “I think the department is great and the teachers do a fine job. He also believes the students get a quality education. He also men- tioned that there were some changes in the curriculum and the class load was lightened. Studies Fun and games with a dedicated college Joe. Mr. Hellooooo! Mr. Wilson. Mr. Lyon, (he voice of the Sou.h Dearborn Nowlin. n,fi S' A sigh of relief as class is dismissed. The Social Studies Department pro- vided many interesting movies, speak- ers, and trips this year. Some of the movies were The Grapes of Wrath, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pit- man, Theodore Roosevelt, and a series on America with William Shatner. Speakers on rape and Congressman Lee Hamilton visited many of the se- niors. Conservation officer Paul Shep- herd demonstrated the uses of a radar gun. For Mr. Heim’s Crime class, Coro- ner Randy Lothridge showed a slide show in the auditorium on his work. A highlight for the seniors was the bus trip to and from Indianapolis to visit the state capital. The students were fa- miliarized with the building and the different branches of state government. Senator Nugent answered questions and explained things to interested stu- dents. These classes also offered to register eligible students to vote. Some of the teachers also taught subjects in other departments. Mr. Wil- helm, the German teacher, was the in- structor in the Citizen-Geography class and Mr. Lyon’s, the world history teacher, taught Spanish I. All these teachers have their own personalities. With Mr. Nowlin, every- one had fun and games, Mr. Wilson got everyone psyched up,” and many seniors had Crime with Heim.” Mr. Lyon's Voice of the Knights” kept his classes informed. is MATHEMATICS Proofs, logarithms, and cosine were all part of the “Math Mania.” Some students who ventured as far as Geom- etry or Analysis came out wishing they hadn’t. When it was time for a test one could always see the halls filled with students cramming. But, with our great staff of teachers, many came out hav- ing learned a great deal. During the year, the Math Department acquired a computer which was used to supple- ment instruction for academic stu- dents who wished to do extra work. Mr. Hornbach also instructed students how to operate the computer and Tom Steuver programmed it. Mrs. Smith equates her students with triangles. Mr. Hornbach looks back again for the answer. Many science courses specialized in certain areas. Human Anatomy students disected fe- tal pigs, while students in Botany in- vestigated poisonous plants. At first in- experienced chemistry students blew up test tubes, but as the year went on they became capable chemists. Seniors in Physics class discovered how light reacts in several experiments. 19 • • • Your Business Is To learn the mechanics of good busi- ness, students needed to learn many skills, one of which was General Busi- ness. It set up a good foundation and helped to prepare the students for Ac- counting. These, along with the other fine courses, of Typing, Shorthand, and the mini-courses, helped many students to progress into good paying obs, directly after graduation. This year Mr. Race instructed a few mini- courses that familiarized students with filling out income tax forms for per- sonal and business use. There was also a course on banks and banking, that helped the students learn how a bank is operated. All business classes were visited by a representative from South- ern Ohio College. Accounting students learning the Basics. Mrs. Myers provides helpful tips for her students. Just thrilled I'm sure. 20 Their Business 21 CLEFTS The South Dearborn music dept, has one of the finest facilities around. Now being at iVs 2nd year it has a various amount of classes offered. The classes are taught through the combined talents of Mr. David Kling, Mr. Steven Hedges, and Mr. Doug Sykes. The classes that are offered will deeply strengthen the music ability of one's interest. Musical PerSWAYsion I just love attention. One more time! Skeeter takes a break. 22 CHEFS The butcher is here! The butcher is here! Yes the butcher was here. He came to the Home Economics Depart- ment to demonstrate the technics of how to prepare, butcher, and cook pork. The Home Economics Department teaches and helps the students learn how to prepare for their futures. Mrs. Riehle’s class took a trip down to a material manufacturing plant. 23 ART The art department was one of the departments which encouraged a stu- dent’s creativity to be used. The begin- ning students learned the basic con- cepts of design and color while the more advanced artists learned the skills of drawing using the elements of line, shape, and form. The Industrial Arts Dept., affec- tionately referred to as shop , was where students learned to use many kinds of machinery. In wood shop, students made every- thing from clocks to playhouses. In this department, students learned to work with their hands as well as their brains. • • • Fun, Fitness and Foxtrot? Mr. Finnegan supervises softball. This year’s P.E. class offered a wide variety of courses that were both fun and educational. Instructor, Bob Fin- negan, and assistants, Pam Merril and Brent Rutemiller, did a great job of keeping everyone interested in the ath- letics and other activities. The staff put some spice into classes by adding field hockey and dancing. Though dancing got its share of jokes, everyone liked field hockey because it was new and different. Swimming was really popu- lar. Lots of new equipment and the use of three gyms made our P.E. program one of the best in the area. Mr. Dills lands a helping hand. The things they expert us to do! Some students who wanted to get ahead in their future jobs took educational programs at SIVS. The SIVS curriculum included auto mechanics, auto body re- pair, sales and marketing occup. and food service—just to name a few. The students took their re- quired academic courses at SD and then traveled by bus to Ver- sailles to take their classes at SIVS. The SIVS was an excellent al- ternative for students who are in- terested in vocational training rather than college-related fields. In the Graphic Arts program, students learn to use the offset presses. One of (he populor dosses at S VS is (he Auto Mechanics class. A typical (lav in the life of a future electrician. COOKS The cooks at any school take a lot of abuse from students about the quality of the food served. Nonetheless, our cooks worked hard and served many nutritious meals. The cooks arrived early to prepare the noon meal and stayed until the kitchen was clean again for the next day. Together they gave us the ham- burgers and french fries, the meat loaf and potatoes, the hot ham and cheese we needed to make it through the af- ternoon—until we made it to McDonalds for a refill. The excite- ment began on Thursday when the pep band got the show started. The Swing Choir also performed before the king and queen contest. Our candidates, Pat Tcdesco and Mike Clark represented the school well in the king and queen contest, which resulted in a victory for Mike. The highlight of the big event was a parade on Saturday, which was led by our 170 piece band. On Saturday, the varsity cheerleaders participated in a cheerleading con- test. Though our cheerleaders did not bring home a trophy, the squad showed much enthusiasm and pride. Considering all that happened during the three day pe- riod the Farmer’s Fair was a huge success. There is no pot of gold at the and of this rainbow. Mika Clark smilas after being crowned king of the Farmer's Fair. School spirit is publicized as SD cheerleaders perform. A truck load of farmers show their interest for the future. Some “Marching Knights“ provide music for the parade's spectators. The SD Drill Team smiles despite sore feet. 40 Seniors are proud. Juniors give a big “K” for the spelling of Knights. SD’s Band strides with pride. Go Big Red! Go Big Red! was a popular cheer during the football pep sessions. Even the bond had special cheers. We had a great season and fantastic pep sessions. Everyone had a hand in keeping the students rowdy- teachers, team players, hand, cheerleaders, the Blues Brofhers and even Ball State University students who were past members of South Dearborn High School. Students really enjoyed the pep sessions. Not only did it get stu- dents out of class hut it gave the students time to meet new people and talk to their friends. 42 “Let’s get fired up! Student support suddenly improved; we had won the sectional. A winning team was all smiles as the stu- dent body cheered them on. The Blues Brothers even showed up to tell us that they were behind us all the way. It was a fantastic year. We had tug-of-war, pyra- mid contests, spirit stick contests, and even a contest to see who had the best Sunto Claus face. The student body was fired up so much that it was very hard to calm down. The basketball team proved to be worthy Knights and so did the student body. Kermit, The Blues Brothers, a flasher, the Village People, a dixieland band, a water show, a singing cowboy, rock bands, a swing choir, and other personalities were found in our auditorium on April 18 and 19. Now one asks, why were they there? These personalities were there to perform for our second annual Variety Show, of course. This show consisted of the many talented students and friends of this school. To put on this magnificent show, it took hours of practices and rehearsals at all hours of the night. Mr. Kling, the director, put all his effort into this activity with the help of his band. Mr. Hedges controlled the sound and lighting with the aid of his students. The show opened with an act straight from Florida, our Swing Choir, and progressed with talent un- limited. Some senior girls displayed their own talents by providing a water show with all types of containers to the tune of the “Beau- tiful Blue Danube Waltz. From the musical Oklahoma, Alicia Lay and Willy Stinchcomb sang their solos. The climax of the show was the final appearance of our own Blues Brothers. 45 Eltvood mid |n iel nke Ulmis in Ifx-ir lusl SO opprairnnco. KNIGHTS IN THE LIGHTS After many hours of hard work, the Drama Department presented the first play of the school year, Moliere’s The Imaginary Invalid, on September 24 and 29. Fhe cast gave a matinee performance on the 28th to the student body. Many seniors participated in the productions this year. Their experience added to the success of the shows. Mrs. Rullman commented, “They will be missed tremendously, but with adequate training they can be replaced I he making of these plays took the combined talents of many people, Drama Club, Mr. Hedges Stage Craft Class, and Mrs. Rullman’s Dramatics and Stage Production Classes. These people spent many hours at work which ranged from the building of sets or the adjustment of lights to putting on makeup and costume changes. Their work was greatly appreciated. The South Dearborn Knights football team ended its 1979-80 season with a proud seven win. three loss record. Among the victories were four games won by coming-from-behind to beat the opponent. Two overwhelming victories were overtime wins against conference foes. Batesville and Greensburg. The Knights' E.I.A.C. record was 5-1; this put the Knights in a comfortable second place. One of the season's highlights was the homecoming game against Batesville. The Knights won the rain soaked game in overtime, 14-6. Senior. Troy Johnson, scored on a quarterback sneak for the winning score, and Mike Rowlette recov- ered a fumble to seal the victory. The 1979 season saw many great individual performances. Jeff Henke ended his career by leading the E.I.A.C. in rushing for the second straight year. Henke also had 268 yards against Milan set the school’s single game rushing record. Mike Clark, the Knight’s team captain, was named E.I.A.C. Defensive Player of the year by menacing the opponents with his ferocious play at middle line- backer. Other All-Conference selections, besides Henke and Clark, were Defen- sive Back. Richard Zielinski and Defensive End. Todd Snider. These individual performances pulled the team together to create the spirit needed to have a win- ning record. The team had a style of its own. Our Knights were known to their opponents as “BELIEVERSThe chant. “We Believe” will be long remembered. 75 IT TAKES DEDICATION • • • 76 • • t TO WIN The Knight Pride Club was formed of football players who had reached certain accomplishments. To belong to the club, the offensive team must spell out “Knight Pride Club twice. To re- ceive a letter, a player must have been on the field when we scored a touch- down, and h of a letter for extra point. The defensive team must spell out the name once. They acquired a letter for holding the opponents scoreless each half. Individuals obtained letters for the testing program, not missing a game, and voted either player or prac- tice player of the week. Marty Picratt, the sports editor for the Journal Press, had these words to say about the 1979-80 season for the South Dearborn Knights. “Saddled with every bad break imaginable, the limping South Dearborn Knights owned a 5-10 record and little hope of winning its first sectional title. Personal squabbles, defeats in the final minutes, criticism by fairweathered fans and the public announcement of the coach's resignation brought the club to an all-time low. But, as most noble men do when their backs are pinned against the wall, the Knight machine exploded, winning seven of its last nine games, in- cluding the school’s first sectional victory (Regional Finalist) and the distinction of being one of the last 32 teams in the state of Indiana. What the coach had been saying all year finally sunk in-that you, the Knights, had the potential to be a very successful team if you worked hard and acted and played as a team. Saturday night in the Connersville Regional finals the Knights could have eas- ily downed the “sweet sixteen-bound” Spartans. Not because they were playing out the ear, or because of a fluke—it was because South Dearborn was playing near its potential. Fans and foes always will wonder what this team could’ve done had they begun as they ended. For Bob Finnegan it was a great finale to a notable 29-16 career at the infant institution. For the eight seniors, especially the starting five, it was a point well proved without words. We’ll never see Strauty jump and fire that fist up in the air, or Hon smash home a stuff, or Todd grab a rebound, or Reinberger and Havo take the club into a four-corner, but what they’ve done to pull the school to- gether will be long remembered.” 86 INTO ANOTHER SEASON South Dearborn Varsity Basketball Record 12-12 South Dearborn 78 Rising Sun 59 South Dearborn 66 Southwestern 81 South Dearborn 70 Union Co 86 South Dearborn 52 68 South Dearborn 73 48 South Dearborn 55 Lawrenceburg 52 South Dearborn 58 Seymour 78 South Dearborn 60 Lawrenceburg 62 South Dearborn 56 48 South Dearborn 54 55 South Dearborn 51 Brookville 56 South Dearborn 88 Greensburg 66 South Dearborn 53 Jennings Co. 72 South Dearborn 79 49 South Dearborn 55 South Ripley 66 South Dearborn 71 66 South Dearborn 58 Batesville 55 South Dearborn 68 Brown Co. 59 South Dearborn 54 Madison 48 South Dearborn 53 70 Sectional South Dearborn 63 59 South Dearborn 59 Lawrenceburg 55 Regional South Dearborn 70 46 South Dearborn 46 60 HOOSIER HYSTERIA HEIGHTENS VICTORY!!! Young men from all areas of the dis- trict came together to form a team with potential to win. Separately, these boys may never have tasted vic- tory. But together, all they needed was a chance—the chance to use their tal- ents for the good of the unit. The season’s slow start seemed only to make them more determined to suc- ceed. This determination led the Knights to their first sectional title. The Knights then traveled to Connersvii e to face the Milan Indians. With a 70-46 victory over the Indians, the Knights moved to the final game against the Connersvil e Spartans. The Knights were defeated, but were considered winners by their hometown fans. The Knights, though they were slow start- ers, were winners in the end. First Sectional Victory—1980 “Havo speeds by L’burg in the deciding game of the sectional. Nice try, but this one belongs to Hon. Regional Finalists Proud Gary Hyatt's first Regional. The crowd watches in awe os Brian fires one. “Go Big Red!” ond We WILL Win!” echoed thru the crowded gym as the Knights battled to emerge victorious over Switz. Co. Pacers. As luck would have it, the Knights were matched against L'burg in the final game and that old rivalry was revived. But this time the Knights reigned, and the crowds chanted On to the Regional! In the first game of the Regional the Knights charged and easily overthrew the Milan Indians, thus advancing to the finals. But in this last game the Knights battled exhaustion and lost. As every season must, this one ended. But the senior members left, secure in the knowledge that they gave it their best. Who would have thought this team could have pulled so many people together in a way that would last forever? 91 92 A Year Kim Montgomery holds the advantage for the Knights. It was a year of ups and downs. The Lady Knights experienced a lot of “ups” as they learned to work as a team and become better friends. At first, they had some difficulties due to lack of varsity experience. The class officers, (President— Margo Smith, Vice-Presi- dent—April Raffignone, Secretary —Mi tzi H as- sung, Treasurer—Bryan Banschbach, pictured right), the prom com- mittee, and sponsor, Mr. Wilhelm, chose the theme, “Knights Are For- ever” The band, Albat- ross, provided the music amid the green and yel- low decorations. As the evening progressed, the couples hoarded buses to take them to the dis- cotheque, Tomorrow's. There, everyone enjoyed themselves in the atmo- sphere of lively music and flashing lights. Layout Editor...... Copy Editor........ Photography Editor ....Donna Stokes Debbie Barricklow ...Lois Hudepohl ....Lu Ann Pelsor ...Sonia Hubbard ...Arnie Bowman We, the editors and staff of the 1980 KNIGHT LIFE, would like to say that producing this yearbook has been a unique experience that will long be remem- bered. Regardless of the fact that our staff was com- pletely inexperienced, we suffered a change of editors in the middle of the year, our photographs were not taken, lost, stolen, destroyed (pick one), and our sum- mer deadlines were late even though many long hot hours were spent, we managed to put together a book of memories that will increase in value over the com- ing years. Enjoy the memories—the year was full of them! We hope that within these pages you will find the photographs and words to help recapture the spirit of this year—the good, the bad, the funny, the sad, the places, the friends, the times, the trends, all the games, and all the names. Everything's here in your yearbook. This book is your only permanent record of an un- forgctable year. Use it time and again—to remember a face, to recall a place, to relive a game, or to remem- ber a name. It’s been fun and thanks for the memories!
