The' non4return of several veterans, the early appfe- hension of young 'college wrestlers, and the arrival of a mid-season coach, due to, Coach Ekeland's heart attackpdid little in the way of-combining forasuccess- ful season. Don Ashiem found himself again in the role of senior citizen to a group of ,youngerimen,and combined with the late leadership of Coach Gary' Boner and ther assistance given' by'John Sterner of Stevens High School following the loss of Coach Eke- landp the Tech team put 'up a tremendous battle with Black Hills ,and ,defeated a -team from Eastern Nlon- tana. However, the rest iof the yearturned into a long, disappointing season. Individual standouts showing promisewere: Don Ashiem, Lee Erdman, Larry Coop- er, Tim Kuhl, Steve Erdman, and Chip Story.

Eight school records were broken and another tied during the course of the season. Dale Patterson was thelone senior, and his injury in the conference meet prob ably denied the Miners the championship. Dale leaves the school with no less than six school records in his name. The standouts and record holders that lead Tech to a close finish in the conference meet and a second place finish in the Southern lnvitational were: Chuck Wait, Monte Evans, Gary Trohkimoinen, Lindell Sunde, Erv Anderson, Dale Patterson, Kip Dopp, Don Stroh, Gary Hanten, Kerry Belden, Buck Wood- ward and Doug Schlepp. ' There were three conference individual champions: Monte Evens, l4':21l mile, Doug Schlepp, l44'1W'l triple jump, and Gary Trohkimominen, l9:43.5l steeplechase. Gary also set a new All Time South Dakota Colligeate Mark with 9:31.8 steeplechase time at Springfield.
