K LQ-els i ' Q 3 ti l ,sl , , -,, , i The l97l edition of the Engineer is dedicated to Associate Professor Dr. Paul Gnirk of the Mechanical Engineering Department at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Dr. Gnirk, a native of Burke, South Dakota. received his B.S. in Mining Engineering in l959 from Tech. He received his Ph. D. in Rock Mechanics with minors in Applied Mathematics and Mechanical Engineering from the University ol' Minnesota in I966 and is a registered professional engineer in South Dakota and Texas. Dr. Gnirk has served as the chief advisor to M.E. graduate students, a mem- ber of the Judiciary Committee, an advisor to the Board of Control, and a member of the faculty Graduate Studies, Research, and Student Activities Committees. ln his earlier years at Tech he was an assistant professor of Mining Engineering and the director of the computation center. We are dedicating the l97l Engineer to you, Dr. Gnirk, for the hard work and long hours of service you have so unselfishly given the students of Mines.
