This year's cagers, playing the type of fastbreak basketball which coach lim Kampen has become known for, made a strong bid for the SDIC title. Their final record was 15-ll, the 15 wins being the 4th largest number of victories in Tech history. Tech also garnered ll new team records in the 26 game season, the first of which was 130 points against Rocky Mountain in their season opener. Tech opened up the season with three consecutive wins against non-conference opponents. Their record was 4-2 before they played their first conference game, the annual classic with Black Hills. The round-ballers dropped this one, a 76-74 thriller, and then went into a slight tailspin, falling to a 6-7 record at the end of 1969. However, the beginning of 1970 saw Tech roll up three straight wins, all by margins of 7 or less points. One of these was cr fine hard-fought victory against this year's SDIC champions, Northern. The win marked the 4th consecutive time that Tech had defeated the Wolves. The Hardrockers battled to a 5-3 conference mark after defeating Dakota Wesleyan for the first time in a decade. Northern eliminated Tech from the championship by defeating them before a capacity crowd in Aberdeen. Tech kept fighting, however, and won two more games to bring their conference record to 7-5, good for a 3rd place tie in the SDIC. Tech will miss the services of three graduating seniors next year, Dave lackson, Dan Hersrud, and Bernie Tompkins. Iackson became Tech's all-time scoring leader, eclipsing Chuck Neller's mark early in the season, by rolling up 1887 points. lackson averaged 20.0 points per game and pulled down 12.1 rebounds a game in rounding out a fine career. Bruce Bad Moccasin will be back for another year, after taking over the 4th spot on Tech's all-time scoring list. Regulars Steve Hoffman, loe Vig, and left Dietz who set a District 12 one-game rebounding record with 30, will all return for another season. 181
