H V Showing many of the mistakes of a young team, lfech ended the season with three wins and six losses. he highpoint of the year was the homecoming victory ver DWU Vwth most of the squad returning next year, i ech should be a contender for the conference title. The season opener found Tech starting a new series with Colorado College. Tech failed to get off the ground jgcoring-wise until ferry Tystad scored on a 3 yard run Hn the last play of the hrst half. A T ystad to Gary Fschenbaum pass accounted for the other lWnes score. hne passing game by Colorado added to Hardrocker mistakes created a 44-l3 defeat for the lVHners. M The Hardrocker offense recorded its best perform- ance of the year in the 30-0 rout of Rocky Mountain by qolling up 356 yards rushing to set a new club record. Dale Thomason led all rushers with l 04 yards, includ- ing a 42 yard drive play for a touchdown. Don Leitner spared late in the hrs! half on a pass after a faked held 'oal. Two touchdowns by Dave Berg and a held goal by ifaher Barakat accounted for the remainder of the points. The contest with Huron College opened with an darly score after a long punt return by the opponents. The Hardrocker defense stiffened and held the Scalpers scoreless for the remainder of the game. Tying the shore with a touchdown pass to Thomason, the lVHners clontinued their barrage with a touchdown run by Bert- ziick and a 22 yard TD on an intercepted pass by Lanny Wager. Barakat finished the scoring with a 35 yard Held goal to give Tech a 24-7 victory. . An inpenetrable Dakota State defense held the Hardrocker to only l05 yards total offense. Two held ghoals by Barakat, one for 38 yards, were all the stifled d fense could accomplish. A 54 yard run, a series of passes and two Tech fumbles gave the Trojans the 27- Gvictory. ln a drenching downpour, the Southern Pointers after a 2 yard plunge by Dave Berg, but could not score again. The Pointers scored their last TD on a .re- covered fumble in the end zone in the last few seconds ofthe game. Three inches of snow added to the misery of being shutout 34-0 by Chadron. Drives of 59 and 5l yards were stopped without scores for the Hardrockers While the Eagles seemed to be scoring at will despite numer- ous interceptions and fumbles. Bertnich led Tech rushers with 80 yards in l2 carries. Q Techs second consecutive M-day victory was high- lighted in the last minutes by a 63 yard drive for a come-from-behind touchdown. The Hardrockers led at halftime after a held goal by Barakat, only to lose the lead on a return- of an intercepted pass for a TD. On a fourth and two situation, very late in the game, the Hardrockers defense held the opponents and took con- trol of the ball with 74 seconds left on the clock. A hghting catch by Eschenbaum of a 24 yard pass from T ystad commenced the hnal drive. Using the capabilities of a powerful backheld, the Hardrockers churned down the held for the score and the victory. Bertnick tallied 35 of the 63 yards in that last drive, as well as the touchdown. The Northern offense, proving much too powerful for the Hardrocker defense, scored at seemingly every possibility. The Tech offense appeared to compensate for the overpowered defensive team by rolling-up over 300 yards in total offense. Tystad set a team record by completing l 8 passes, six each to Eschen- baum and Leitner to also tie a record. The lopsided battle found the Hardrockers on the short end of the 54-2l score. hm Richman picked off a Weaver pass which set up Barakat's record-breaking sixth held goal of the year to give the Hardrockers an early lead. The Black H1ll's defense allowed very little for the rest of the to be the better swimmer and downed Tech l9- The Hardrockers trailed l3-6 most of the last half A ., .
