110 ASCE The highlight of the year for A.S.C.E. was its Christ- mas Party at Gill's Sun Inn. The student chapter of A.S.C.E. is the professional organization for civil engineering students. Member- ship is open to all students enrolled in the under- graduate and graduate programs of civil engineering. Prof. Tom propson is the faculty advisor. Meetings are held monthly to promote the profes- sional development and involvement of all members. Other activities included weekly films, four field trips, a student-faculty picnic, a student-faculty Christmas party, as well as active participation in Freshman Open House, Homecoming, and Parents Day. The faculty, under the able leadership of Santa Buff, presented gifts.

112 r-4' Scabbard cmd Blade is a national military honor society with local chapters, called companies, located in 131 leading colleges which have ROTC programs. The chapter at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is des- ignated as Company F, l2tl1 Regiment. The purposes of S. 6: B. are primarily to raise the standard of military edu- cation American colleges and universities, to encourage and foster the essential qualities of good and efficient of- ficers, and to promote friendship and good fellowship among the cadet officers. Membership is by election only and is based upon merit. All cadets taking advanced ROTC are eligible for elec- tion to S. 81 B.
