The purposes of Scabbard and Blade are primarily to raise the standard of military education in American colleges and universities, foster the essential qualities of good and efficient officers, and to promote friendship and good fellowship among the cadet officers. Membership is by election only and is based on merit. All cadets taking advanced ROTC are eligible for election to Scabbard and Blade. The cadet elected to Scabbard and Blade must be an officer and a gentleman. He must possess the qualities of leadership, patriotism, efficiency, loyalty, obedience, courage, good fellowship, and honor-all of which lead to success in any field of endeavor, military or civil. i 1
