ACT ONE lln The Moonlightl Following the Overture, the Narrator sets the mood of the story with the wistful Try to Remember. He then introduces the main char- acters: A boy, a girl, two fathers, and a waIl. The girl, Luisa, expresses her yearning for the adventurous life in the propulsive Much More, which leads into the ardent duet Metaphor, sung with the boy, Matt, across the wall that separates them. The young lovers are purposely kept apart by their fathers-not because they are enemies but because they feel that parental disapproval is the surest way to have their two children fall in love i Never Say No l. Since their mission is accomplished, they further plan to and their supposed feud by having a bandit, El Gallo fthe Narrator in disguisel, stage an attempted rape i lt Depends on What You Pay l which will be heriocally foiled by the boy. Thus, by moon- light, El Gallo and two actors, Henry and Mortimer, surprise the lovers after their appealing, prophetic duet, Soon lt's Gonna Rain, and carry out the rampageous Rape Ballet. Once Matt triumphantly vanquishes the foe, the fathers and their children are blissfully united l Happy Ending l. ACT TWO lln The Sunlightl We find the romance bathed in sunlight is short-lived l This Plum ls Too Ripe l. Upon learning that they have been duped by their fathers, the lovers quarrel. Matt is determined to see the world i l Can See lt l, despite the Narrator's more sobering comments, and Henry and Mortimer re-appear to offer to be his guides. With their plan gone awry, the fathers put up the wall again and sing philosophically about the un- predictability of children i Plant a Fladish l. Luisa, still pining for adventure, is offered a vision by El Gallo l Round and Flound l, but her dream never materializes. Matt, disheveled and disillusioned, returns to find that Luisa has been hurt also. Although they have been hurt, they have grown up and rediscovered their love for one another. l They Were You l. Autumn is over. Winter has come bringing snow- wisdom. Or as the Narrator reprises, Without a hurt the heart is hollow. Sir, The players have arrived. Romantic drama? Without A Hurt the Heart is Hollow The stage became alive vvith energetic song and dance as the National Thespian Chapter of South Dade High School presented the award-winning International musical, The Fantasticks. Under the joint direction of lVlr. Alan Fetterman and lVlr. David Kross, an unusally small cast of eight people recreated the longest running off-Broadway musical. The role of the Narrator was played by Bill Pratt, Sheldon Lee and Bob Lynn played the fathers of David Magee and Susan Thompson. Libby Cool created the role of the Wall, as Jim Bernecker and Bob Thomas completed the cast as two hilarious actors. Long rehearsal hours, set construction, make-up, costumes and music rehearsals added to the tremendous number of accumulated hours of dedicated preparation for the finest production in South Dade's history. lVl0I'Tim9f, die fOr the man.
