In order that you may recall the numerous academic, cultural, and social activities en- joyed by all, we have taken care to include at least a part of each. Included are Your classmates, teachers, and counselors, so you might not forget their companionship or their ready aid. To make a unified picture of the life at South Charleston High School, we picked o theme to join the old with the new- the old battered, cracked walls as paralleled to the ever new spirit of the youth at S.C.H.S. Since cars and their ceoseless changing are almost synonymous with youth, this theme has been carried throughout our book as much as possible, and we hope you enjoy it and appreciate its purpose. As a member of the school's tennis team Casey shows off her proficient forehand. Casey prepares for day's classes by go ing to her locker. Originated to give recognition to seniors who, during the past three years, have contributed to their time and energy to the school and communi- ty, the Hall of Fame has chosen for one of its first outstanding students Carolyn Kay Liggett, better known to us as Casey. Carolyn, a friendly, ver- sitile girl, has done much to bring recognition to our school through representing South Charleston at the SASC, her membership on the tennis team and her editorship of the X-ray. Also, Casey is secretary of the French Club, a Senior Class re- presentative on the student council, and was very active during pep week. As the past has shown and the future to further emphasize-,she has done a good job as a student, we predict that success will always be by her side. Dean has been chosen on the basis of the recognition he has brought to our school and our community. Not only has he been active around school by being in the choir, the track team, the student council, and the National Honor Society, but he has also been elected Boys' State Gov- ernor, Senator to Boys' Nation ,and President of the West Virginia Association of Student Councils. FOOTBALL South Charleston s 3 6 l season brought many tears and shouts of joy to the hearts of those people who follow the game. In our starting game of the season the Dupont Panthers edged by in a hard fought thriller. Michoux, Combs, and Fenwick led the Black Eagles' scoring attack, During the first two minutes of action both teams scored, South Charleston, when Michoux scampered 77 yards on a re- turn kickoff. The Black Eagles while playing one of their best games of the year were outscored, but not outplayed, by the Charleston Mountain Lions. Late in the first quarter South Charleston scored on an eleven yard run by Michoux and held a one point lead until Charleston scored late in the fourth quarter. The combined efforts of H. B. Darrell Gibson and F. B. Marshall Reveal proved to be too much for the South Charleston eleven, as they lost to the Nitro Wildcats, Our touchdown came with only one minute and ten seconds remaining in the game as Bob Sibold scored on a twenty two yard pass from quarterback Eddie Butcher. In the game with Sissonville, the Eagles scored on the final quarter when quarterback Dave Combs sneaked over from the two yard line, Shike Keene then converted for the extra point. However, the Sissonville opposition was too much and with only one minute left to play they pushed across for a touchdown. lt just wasn't the Eagles' night for they were no match for the Stonewall Jackson Generals. Many injuries impaired the Eagles as quarter- back David Combs and halfback John Fen wick were taken out early in the game. South Charleston scored early in the second quarter after Dick Tully re- covered a fumble, and Butcher, a few seconds later plunged the remaining yards, HIGHLIGHTS Although South Charleston was picked to win this game the breaks seemed to be against them as Clendenin held the Eagles to a tie game. Michaux made the Eagle touchdown in the first half and with seconds remaining in the last quarter, Butcher passed to Sibold in the end zone but the ball was intercepted and the game ended in a deadlock. South Charleston managed two touchdowns against an un- beaten Barboursville eleven but it was to no avail. Playing an a muddy field, John Steele recovered a fumbled punt to set up the first score. A sixty five yard march with Shike Keene going the final five yards added the second. An inspired Eagle team took their first win at the expense of St. Albans in a thrilling fight to the finish. Extra points and John Scott's action in re- covering a fumble saved the game. Eddie Butcher accounted for two touch- downs and passed to Bob Sibold for a third. The additional one was made by Shike Keene. Michaux spearheaded the attack against the fighting lrish by scor- ing both of South Charleston's touchdowns. One resulting from a forty yard pass from Bob Sibold, the other on a thirteen yard run. Keene converted for the extra point. The Black Eagles' upset over Dunbar came as no surprise to the fans. South Charleston held a l3-O lead until the Bull- dogs finally scored in the final period. More than once the Eagles' defense had to ward off a Dunbar rally. Early in the second quarter Butcher went over on a one-inch sneak after Michaux buffered to the goal line. Dennis Osborne gave a thrilling performance when he scooped up a Bulldog fumble and ran forty-four .yards to score. The Eagles started weak and finished strong, win- ning their last three games. Our last game enabled us to retain the Lion's Club trophy. Every Black Eagle fan can say, We're proud of you. l 0: a,au.4-so-whf.vmf5.......,.t...a.....,L .M W A il Sec-F FIRST ROW-Bill Peters, Tom Halimon, Randy Robinson, Roger McVicker Bill Close Steve Matthews, Earl Stover, David Adkins, David Booth. This award has been bestowed upon her because of her innumerable contributions to the Senior Class throughout its history, Not only is she the Vice-Presi- dent and o leader of the Student Council, but she has also organized several movements to improve school spirit and reputation. An example of these movements is the newly organized Spiriteers Club of which Glen- dora is the sole originator. Glendora, known as Glenny to her friends takes an active part in the Thespian Society of South Charleston. When she is not in the presentation, she may be found working hard behind the scenes. Glendora, we can truly say, has definitely been an asset to her class, school, and community. Climoxing a busy day, Glendoro conducts a meeting of the Spiriteers Club which she helped to organize for the purpose of building school spirit. Part of her job as Vice-President of the Student Council is to be prepared to take over an assembly program in the absence of the President. 9 fx 9 A moment of pride is enjoyed by Dean and Glendora as they place into the trophy case the championship trophies which our team won this year. . . . The S. C. quint ended its regular season with a l7-3 record which was one of the best in the school's his- tory. With the season completed, South Charleston was found sharing the Kanawha Valley Conference championship with the St. Albans Red Dragons. The Eagles led the conference in of- fense by averaging close to 80 points per game. The score of the opening game of the season gave a preview of what was to come as S. C. trounced Cedar Grove 86-49. Four S. C. boys hit double figures with Jay Deitz leading the pack with 30 markers. The fans went wild as Ward and Deitz took scoring honors in South Charleston's lO2-67 win over Charleston. The Eagles made a sizzling 6l.2 per cent of their shots and led all the way. Surrette's cagers eased by the Dunbar five 50-46 in a game that was played at a much slower pace compared to their pre- vious performances. The Bulldogs cut the S. C. lead to one point in the final two minutes of action, but three free throws gave the Eagles their hard fought victory. The Black Eagles had little trouble in downing an alumni quint by 81-56. Michaux played his first game of the season and tossed in l5 points. A 32 point show by Deitz highlighted the S. C. win at Nitro. Bob Sibold, Bill Londeree, and Ronnie Michaux also scored in the double figures as the Eagles topped the Wildcats 77-66. Continuing their winning ways, S, C. won their fifth straight conference game by defeating East Bank 81-75 in an action packed game played at the Recreation Center. Carl Ward led the Eagle attack by tallying 23 points. ln their next contest South Charleston posted a 75-62 win over the DuPont Panthers at Midway Junior High. Carl Ward came through again with 23 points. A crowd of 2,380 fans at Charleston's Civic Center saw South Charleston nip Stonewall Jackson 59-56 after trailing by as much as lO points in the first half. The Eagles, led by Ward, Sibold, and Deitz, went ahead for the first time with two min- utes left in the third period, and after the lead changed several times, they went ahead to stay at 48-47. Unbeaten South Charleston took a big step toward the K.V,C. crown by downing St. Albans 77-64 before a standing room only crowd. The Eagles were never behind after the first quarter and shot like pros at the foul line making 3l of 37 chances. 6 l. ' ll BASKETBALL The Black Eagles won their ninth in a row at the expense of Charleston Catholic at the Irish gym. Ward, Sibold, and Deitz together scored 67 points in their 102-61 victory. DuPont's determined Panthers handed the previously unbeaten Black Eagles their first defeat of the season. A S.C. rally in the final period fell short as they lost 71-65. The trio of Deitz, Ward, and Sibold proved to be too much for Nitro as they took a 92-67 thrashing from the powerful Eagles. The Nitro cagers had no chance from the very start of the game. South Charleston's high powered attack completely smothered Cedar Grove, with five Black Eagle players in double figures. The Eagles, who held a 48-28 halftime lead and finished up with a 33-point quarter, were paced by Carl Ward. For the second time this season, S.C. overpowered the East Bank Pioneers. The Eagles' 14 points to the Pioneers' 5 in the third period were a deciding factor in the win. South Charleston made its first start outside the K.V.C. against a highly successful Beckley team. Bill Londeree tallied 24 points, many of which were long set shots, and was a ball of fire on defense. After trailing 27-18 at the midway mark, St. Albans surged back to defeat the Black Eagles 62-56. This victory created a tie between the Black Eagles and Red Dragons for first place in the K.V.C. A spine tingling performance by Carl Ward in the last few minutes of the fourth quarter resulted in a win over Stonewall. Trailing all the way the S.C. five staged a comeback which brought smiles to Coach Surrette and S.C. fans. South Charleston held to its tie for first place by walloping Charleston Catholic 80-43. The Black Eagles experienced only minor difficulty in rumbling over the Charleston Mt. Lions 83-70. Deitz took high-scoring honors with 27 points. In their final game of the conference the mighty Eagles rolled over the Dunbar Bulldogs. This important victory gave S.C. the co-championship of the Kanawha Valley with a 16-2 season. Princeton and Rod Sticks Thorn were too much for the Eagles as they were defeated in their last scheduled game of the season. Princeton was outgoaled 33-31 by the Black Eagles, but the Tigers were red hot at the free throw line. H l 1 gf, J ' s. l Si 'le 0 V -. 0 , .NG Q 1- 0 ' - . Both of them have worked and studied constantly over the past years, This high position cannot be ob- tained in a single day, week, or month, it takes steady work throughout high school. Although valedictorian and salutatorian are selected on purely scholastic achievements, Chuck and Carole might well be considered for other services and contributions to the school. Both are members of the National Honor Society, which requires not only schol- arship, but also a character above reproach, outstanding leadership abilities, as well as services of importance to your school. M ...-g L., T LVV- FAREWELL SENIOR Farewell Seniors, As we close the doors of our high school days. We have worked hard, but we have had fun. There has been rain, but there has been sun. We'll always remember the Senior skit With bearded St. Peter and few lights lit, Seniors softly crying, Alma Mater softly hummed. At the end of the football season was the homecoming game, To win this game was the football team's aim. We were all dressed up because this was the last time as fans As Seniors, this was the last time we would sit in the stands. We will always be proud of that team, They won, as was our dream. The cheerleader cheered harder, realizing this was her last. All the games, either won or lost, were in the past. That last day when we went to classes just once more, Our teachers, and we, were glad to get out the door: But wait, are we really glad? Thinking of all the good times in class, we realize we're sad. Now we are walking up the aisle graduation night, The walk up the stairs and the diploma is in sight, Our high school life is rushing through our mind, All the dances, ballgames, and incidental times. Yes, we have good memories and memories that are bad. There are tender memories and memories that are sad. We have all these memories, may only good ones remain, And may we never forget until we meet again.
