X' J 1+ 1 DEDICATION X 'l 23552 1? 1 l ffl ' iztl ., 22, ,E Three years ago Mr. Walter F. Snyder assumed his new role as principal of South Charleston High School. We, the Senior Class of l958, were the first sophomore class at this school to be under his direction. He has worked hard to give the students the advantages of his years of experience, and under his capable leadership our school has taken many forward steps. Throughout our high school career, Mr. Snyder has been a guiding force in showing us the way to a proper mental attitude toward adulthood. He has encouraged us to strive for higher, more far- reaching and enduring goals, and has helped us realize our responsibilities to ourselves, our school, and our society. Thus, it is with gratitude and appreciation that we, the Senior Class of l958, dedicate our Memoirs to Mr. Walter F. Snyder, principal of South Charles- ton High School. i Rf' f -ff wr 1 ff N1 6 , -4? Tl'llRD ROW - Bud Williams, Bob Mount, John Slimick. enior Kfcwd Wa ,mn , Dick Bare Nick Noland -iw David Morris 92 thrilling comedy-drama entitled Night of January 'l6th. An interesting feature of this murder trial was the recruiting of twelve members of the audience to serve as iurors. The iurors were not planted in the audience, but were chosen by lot. The play was constructed in such a way that the evidence concerning the defendant's guilt or innocence was evenly balanced, hence, the decision was based on the individual feelings of each juror toward the case. The two parties opposed in the trial were as radically antagonistic as were the participating audience and the iurors, themselves. The final decision brought protests from the opposing side, who left the performance debating the correctness of the verdict. This proved to be a challenge indeed, serving to arouse arguments and much discussion concerning its intriguing plot and underlying conflicts ----- particularly the eternal conflict between the two distinct types of humanity portrayed. Thus, it was actually the participating audience that was put on trial. ll l 5 li l if 36 i Q I Y - 5 Bailiff - Bob Throckmorton Judge Heath - Jerome Gorby District Attorney Flint- Bill Cyrus Defense Attorney Stevens - Max Padon Clerk of the Court - Pat Armstrong Karen Andre - Barbara Schoonover Dr. Kirkland - Bob McKee Mrs. John Hutchins - Vonnie O'Dell Homer Van Fleet- David Morris Elmer Sweeney - Nick Noland REGULAR CAST - Max Padon, Barbara Schoonover, Bob Throck- morton, Pat Armstrong, Jerome Gorby, Bob McKee, Judy Stewart, Bill Cyrus, Pat Mahoney. Pat Mahoney exemplified the spirit of the team by his hard running and superb playing. The Generals, with their speedy backfield and hard hitting line, proved to be too much for the Eagles. lt looked as though South Charleston's arch rival would never quit scoring as they ran up a score of 3l-0. The Chemists drove toward pay dirt in the first quarter which threw a scare in the Generals for a short time, but after being stopped, the Eagles never threatened again. ln a non-conference tilt, the Beckley Flying Eagles took a 25-6 win over South Charleston. However, with ten first downs to Beckley's eleven, South Charleston gave the strong Flying Eagles a good game. George Dorsey made the only Black Eagle touchdown after Dick Tully had recovered a Beckley fumble. Even though South Charleston scored twice in the second half, it wasn't enough to stop the Red Dragons who were looking for a homecoming victory. George Dorsey and Lowell Hudson tried to keep the Eagles in the running with two touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters. Even though the Eagles fought every yard of the way, the determination of the Dragons won out with the final score at 35-l3. 139' -..ww-wwf B11 Dunl0P -fr.. 1-fe 1 5-ii . . l65 lbs . - - Came' Tm Sid: n 3 .., A ... ,., -H ' U unqg ..- ' 4' ' ,.f- A ' ,003 'iw' r fqetitbr .v M H, .-4 -5eaia+fc.s:vf' ,Z B .fl-era-L.g,5fgL.,fzf R' l E 5' I I Il I 4 WQf'nef' .y y gd., I ,Q , g - . 45 lbs . . . U' V g According to statistics, South Charleston should have beaten Barboursville by two touchdowns, but such was not the case in one of the hardest fought games of the season. South Charleston lost through penalties and fumbles, their only score came in the third quarter when Dorsey swept around the right end in a seven yard drive. The Eagles were set for a second touchdown on the one yard line when a toss was fumbled and Barboursville took possession. The game ended in a T3-6 victory for the Pirates. South Charleston came from behind to battle the Catholic line and the clock to a 13-13 tie. Pat Mahoney scored on a one yard plunge in the second quarter, but the needed points came late in the last period when George Dorsey received a pass from Sophomore quarter- back, Buzzy Harrison, and advanced to the Catholic five. Dorsey, a few minutes later, cut around the right end for the tieing score. South Charleston's 7-O victory prevented Dunbar from permanently possessing the transient Lion's Club Trophy. Nothing could stop the Eagles as they fought to win over the favorite of the day. The only touch- down of the game was made by Pat Mahoney after the combined effort of George Dorsey and Buzzy Harrison had brought the ball to rest on the three. Mahoney also made the conversion. The Eagles kept the Dunbar Squad far from the South Charleston goal allowing them to penetrate past the 30 yard line only twice. This game, the climax to a season which was not otherwise too successful, left us with a promise for a better season next year. e BUrgeSS B x .nf 6, Joh 30 - . f7 T' -. b :dl , 1.4124 .
