emor C aaa .jvhfsfory The SENIOR CLASS of I957 has proven uts abuluty to wun many honors un every phase of school Iufe thus applues to both currucular and extra currucular actuvu tues Hard work partucupatuon un actuvutues and an all around good attutude toward school have made thus SLNIOR CLASS a memorable one The GRADUATING CLASS of l957 was the last freshman class of South Charleston Hugh School and the only freshman class ever to wun Pep Week They also won Pep Week un theur Junuor year thus beung the furst class to wun thus honor twuce As a recognutuon of theur scuentutuc abulutues JOHN HOWELL and JANICE ANDERSON were awarded the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Scuence Award un theur Junuor year CARL EKSTROM havung made an outstandung score on the competutuve Amerucan hustory examunatuon receuved the Daughters of the Amerucan Revolutuon Award At the annual conventuon un Morgantown FRED GHIZ was elected Vuce Presudent ofthe West Vurgunua Junuor Clussucol League Durung the summer of 1956 JEAN DICKERSON HOUSTON NEWMAN and BOB WATSON were chosen to represent South Charleston Hugh at the Youth Lea dershup Camp at Camp Horseshoe SUZANNE CARRUTHERS CAROL HADDIX NAN CY ERSKINE RILLA SKEEN and LINDA SAMMONS were the gurls who represented SCHS at Gurls State NANCY ERSKINE was chosen Governor of Gurls State and LINDA SAMMONS served as Natuonal Party Chaurman Thus was an honor not only for these gurls but for our school as well Boys State representa tuves were BOB GUELICH and JON CHAFIN CLIFFORD WOODS our competent drum mauor receuved thurd place honors for hus baton twurlung at the T956 Mauorette Festuval at Laudley Fueld In September 1956 the SENIORS chose charmung CAROLYN CUNNINGHAM to be Muss SC Hugh MARJORIE DRAKE and NANCY SHAWVER were her attractuve attendants Our representatuve un the Muss Unuted Fund contest was GAIL COOK who receuved furst place honors for South Charleston Hugh School Popular CAROL HADDIX was chosen by the SENIOR CLASS as Muss Black Eagle un November 'I956 Her lovely attendants were JUDY PAYNE and JEAN DICKERSON Thus year the Grand Pruze Wunner of the Sewung Contest was senuor NANCY SERGENT BARBARA GREEN DOROTHY LAWSON and JEAN HAGER also receuved sewung awards Snow Flake Fantasy was the theme of the Snow Festuval where GAIL COOK was crowned Queen of the gala affcuur Her senuor attendants were JEAN DICKERSON and LINDA SAMMONS Throughout hus four years un hugh school JERRY SHAMBLIN has won recognutuon un the state and com munuty He was member of C V C he also receuved honorable mentuon un K V C the all state team and Southern West Vurgunua team BILL SNYDER was guven honorable mention on the all state team and C V C Leadung the cheerung at the sports events were our two senuor cheerleaders CAROL HADDIX and LINDA SAMMONS The senuor boys who worked hard to support our athletuc teams were BILL TAYLOR GREG DUG GAN JERRY SHAMBLIN DENVER LOYD BOB WATSON JOHN DUNCAN HOUSTON NEWMAN DAVID JACKSON BILL SNYDER JAMES PAYNE JON CHAFIN WILLIAM HARRIS FREDDY ERSKINE Q O 1 1 1 . , . . . an . - 11 - 1 1 ' . . 1. . . ,, 1 , .
