Q10 me This year, Pep Week was conducted in a manner different from that of the previous years. Each respective class had a designated game in football season about which they presented a program. The Student Council presented their skit before our final game of the season with Dunbar. Their skit was a form of the Howdy Doody Show, and the special entertainment for the audience was a melodrama, complete with the villain, hero, and heroine. On the Friday of that week, all classes participated in a parade through South Charleston. The Senior class presented their version of the Hodo s Show with the scene at Laidly Field for the encounter ofthe Mighty Black Eagles and the Charleston Mt Lions The lions were no competition for the big birds as they scored an overwhelming victory For their float the Seniors hada brilliantly constructed Black Eagle pulling Noah s Ark with a forlorn Bull dog lashed to the mast lnscribed on the side was the following slogan Noah took them two by two, Eagles take the Dunbar crew Here comes the parade Yea Eagles Keeping the crowd in laughter the Juniors presented their rendition of You Were There portraying Stonewall 5 Last Stand The Eagles, dressed as Indians, gained spirit and enthusiasm by a hilarious war dance The war painted Black Eagles then met the Generals and completely massacred them The Junior Class was the only class to have two floats inthe parade one was a do it yourself Bar B Q with a sign proclaiming We II cook their goosel while the slogan for the other float was Let s plow them underl' XXX This year s winner of Pep Week the sophomores entertained the school with a fairy tale of The Mighty Mighty Eagle and the Red Dragon Future Mother narrated to her three children the story that there had been a great rivalry between the Eagle andthe Dragon over the lovely t ophy Eootballia The Mighty Eagle was victorious when he and the Bad Red Dragon met on the field of battle, and Footballia was returned to her owner With a skunk and a clock the Sophomore float signified It s our time to skunk them ' The Winner s float WE EM DUT ff 145110 A emem Jer The bulldog wl rch was always used tor Pep Week 'l te rnusncal truo from Ca'np Horseshoe ur Tl v nev on nes Betng the only Pres tn en Class to wln pep Week The never C asr wg talk about Ctrls State and Boys State tat Certttn Qenlar feel tg he l ouncnl s new roam ur tum rnator s plactng thrrd ln the Malorette Festival Twxrlnng Contest I lhomettes and therr Cloud No 7 musxc 1 mw Varslty C1 ul: ur hlon le heart rnarorette Lamhs Clarnnet Capers I move the rnertlng be arlgournenl lho changes rn Pep Week T me one blennsh In our perfect football record Those -mtr-r slexgh rudes Qur pl'l'1ClpUl s daughter as Hass Kanawha Malorette Those great Pep Qallres Alfonso Ruben All our vacations IU tovernber The V P In charge ot Intramural sports The strange rntluence at Elvls around S C H S Eagle eye Surrette t e ateterlo Cop Boy those -Nhoppers rn Speech Class The one anal only Hodo s Joe Gf'ICll1IS drag strnp l probably care Our crazy English themes The football team s long speeches In assembly The Thanksgiving ilnner tn the cafeteria A I the laughs clurtng lwltuatron Day The T V elehrrtnes tn Speech C ass Our snappy baskethall tean Th Senrar Cneerlealers 'ml Nalarettes Those teen age Frencn teachers The Blackwater Falls Skr Tour Nah en our Olympic sw harno Axll the sleepy eyes tte tonday after the Senior Trip The Snowflake Fantas, The long trap to the Qarboursvtlle game Oh the rugged College Boavl Tests The night oreg wore 0 tress Do we have to have those pictures taken agaun7 The night the Latin Club rrade punch wrfh water Putting up the fnghr for the all night party The new nvy league look The rnornlng rneetlng place the library Buddy check' Sensor Alnnnlstratlor' D , T we Junior Senior prow Singing the Alma Mater vor tte last time Tre day Jon gave up tne gavel me Sunday BJ calnureote Service T me Commencement lvght tears and all n to allege you Freshrran' 7 Q ' f ' f 1 0 I 0 l A ' , . Both teams displayed o great will to win, but early season litters hampered scoring threats. The Panthers had the scoring spark when it was needed, however, and emerged victorious. The South Caiarleston attack was sparked by the outstanding line play of Jim Miller and the hard running of Greg Shultz, S. C. ----- CHARLESTON A very powerful Charleston High Team showed a wealth of talent as they outclassed the Black Eagles, 32-O, on a muddy Oakes Field gridiron. Even the rain couldnit stop the Charleston backs as they repeatedly tore holes in the South Charleston defense. Mean- while, the defense of the Mountain Lions effectively bottled the offensive thrusts of the Black Eagles. Most of the scoring was done in the first half, and both teams used their reserves to finish the game. Mahoney stopped after long gain. -'22-gre T Zloofdaff A rx' 1 S. C. ----- NITRO Quarterback Jerry Shamblin led the South Charleston Black Eagles to their first win of the season, when they squeaked past the Nitro Wildcats, 20-19, before a jubilant crowd at Oakes Field. -Xided by some fine blocking, Shamblin scored all three touchdowns for the Chemists on runs of 20, lO, and 2 yards. Trailing T3-0 at one point the Chemists fought back to 20-T3 lead. Then, with less than a minute to play, Nitro scored again, but Tex Laos knifed through to block the extra point try which gave the victory to the Eagles. S. C. ----- CLENDENIN Clendenin handed the Eagles their third loss of the season with Melvin Touchdown Harris leading the Cardinals to a 25-6 victory at Clendenin. larris, the small but powerful fullback for the Cardinals, rar- inside and outside the South Charleston defense to score three of his team's four touchdowns. Greg Shultz thrilled Black Eagle fans with an 80 yard runback of a kick-off to open the second half. The attack lagged down after the run, however, and South Charleston could do no more scoring. S. C. - - - - STONEWALL The Stonewall Generals gained their second win of the season by defeating the S.C.l'l.S. Black Eagles, 27-6, at Laidle Field. With Bob Stealy passing for two touchdowns and Tommy Alford scoring one, the Generals took a 20-O halftime lead that put the game beyond South Charleston's reach. The Black Eagles went 58 yards in the fourth quarter for their score, with Jerry Shamblin sneaking over from the one yard line. The loss was South Charleston's fourth compared to one Wln. Shamblin breaks through for T. D. zjvlydggdffi S. C. ----- EAST BANK After scoring twice in the first period, the Pioneers of East Bank held on to defeat the Black Eagles l9-6, at The Oakes Field Stadium. Eullback Arvid Estop led the East Bank attack by scoring both of their first quarter touchdowns. .lerry Shamblin con- tinued to do an outstanding job for the Chemists as he com- pleted 9 of I7 PGSSBS, one of them to Greg Shultz for South Charleston's lone score. Two more T. D. passes by Shamblin were called back because of penalties. S. C. ----- BARBOURSVILLE Touchdown iaunts by Jerry Shamblin and Jim Jordan were to no avail as the Black Eagles were downed by a strong Barboursville team, 39-14, on the Pirates' home field. Bobby Roberts led the Barboursvillevictory with two touch- downs, scoring on runs of 52 and 70 yards. .lordan started the S. C. scoring with a two yard plunge in the first quarter. Shamblin added six points to the Black Eagle total when he grabbed a Pirate fumble on the eight and rambled in for the score. S. C. ----- ST. ALBANS The St. Albans Red Dragons, defending AA Champions, poured it on in the first half to defeat the S.C. Black Eagles by a score of 40-6. Led by Vic Quinet, the Dragons jumped to a 27-O lead at the quarter and were never threatened thereafter. Delbert Kidd, subbing at quarterback for the injured Jerry Shamblin, engineered the only S. C. score by passing to Bill Snyder. Bill then lateraled to Jim Jordan, who completed the 28 yard play by racing into the end zone Eagles close in for the kill. Eagle aerial goes astray. S. C. ----- CATHOLIC The efforts of Andy Pop Korn produced the two touch- downs which proved to be the margin of victory as Charleston Catholic defeated South Charleston by a 20-6 score. Pacing the Black Eagles were George Dorsey and Jerry Shamblin. Shamblin completed passes of 45 yards to Bill Snyder and 26 yards to Carl Tully to set up the S. C. touch- down. Dorsey then picked up the six points with a five yard plunge. During the second half the Eagles dominated the game, however, the Catholic lead was to great to overcome. S. C. ----- DUNBAR The South Charleston Black Eagles played a determined game, but lost a tough one to the Dunbar Bulldogs, 3l-'l9, in the Homecoming game for both teams. Jerry Shamblin led an aggressive Eagle Squad to a 7-6 advantage at the half. This lead was short lived, however, for the Bulldogs scored three quick touchdowns immediately after the half. On the strength of touchdowns by Greg Shultz and Jerry Shamblin, the Eagles came storming back. The effort fell short, though, and the Black Eagles once again absorbed the loss.
