D. Skeens, who has constantly done these favors for us. He has taught lessons to many students-lessons in the philosophy of good humor, the worth of service, and the dignity of humility. Mr. Skeens is the unseen chaperone at many school ac- tivities tor which he has set the stage, and for this service he never feels the spotlight's warmth. For your unselfish service, for your willing- ness to grant important and small favors, and for the generosity with which you have shared so liberally your gracious spirit, Mr. Skeens, we dedicate the l954 MEMOIRS to you. Memoirs, 1 954 and gladly did he learn, and gladly teach . D WW' W .,,.. MR. ROBERT L. BRYAN Principal Mr. Robert L. Good bands are built with tal- ented players, and talented players must be trained. Mr. A. E. Raspillaire not only directs the South Charleston High School Band but is instructor in instrumental music in the South Charleston grade schools, junior high, and high school. Through his seemingly boundless energy, the band is supplemented every year with freshmen bandsmen who soon become as competent as their seniors. The band is one of the most active student groups at South Charleston High, and wher- ever it travels, South Charleston is publicized through quality band music. The SC Chemists defeated their arch rival, Charles- ton, in the statistics department, but failed to equal the Lions in scoring, as Charleston triumphed 12-6. Morris Tank Turley gained 89 yards in a great display of power running as John Bodkin, Chester lightning-like fashion in the second half, after the Rubymen had taken a 13-0 lead, to defeat the Black Eagles 28-13. Inspired by the dedication of lights on Oakes Field, an early aerial attack overwhelmed the Pirates in the first half, but the State Champs exhibited their powerful ground attack in the second half to win. St. Albans' Red Dragons made up a 7 point deficit to defeat South Charleston 14-7 in the Eagles' eighth game although the Dragons were limited to only 97 yards rushing as Senior Guard Chester Otto Graham played great defensive ball. Graham, and a junior, Richard Hawkins, opened huge holes in the Lions' defensive line. South Charleston scored quickly and often in their fourth game to defeat the East Bank Pioneers 26-13. Two spectacular plays of the game featured SC's wingmen, Mandeville and Steele. Mandeville hurled a long, south-paw pass to Steele for a TD on one play and the other was a beautifully executed jump pass by Steele and an equally remarkable catch by Mandeville. State Champion Barboursville scored 28 points in Page One Hundred Twelve and John Ruddle, guards Chester Graham, John Bod- kin, Joe Boley, center Walt Haddad, quarterback Jerry Chandler, halfbacks Mose Zegeer and Dale Jack- son, and tackle Ned Guthrie returned the coveted Lions Club Trophy to the halls of South Charleston High School and evened the season record at 5-5. Featuring the game were 40 and 50 yard runs by Alex Hawkins and two TD plunges by Morris Turley. The Senior Class of 1954 will always remember and gratefully acknowledge the fine display of fight- ing spirit and sportsmanship of the team and coaches. However, the scrappy Block Eagles, at a height disadvantage all year, posted a regular season record of I4 wins and 5 losses, one of the best efforts in the School's history. In the season's opener, the Chemists, after piling up a considerable lead in the early quarters, lost to Dunbar 46-45 as the Bulldogs took advantage of an Eagle slump in the third quarter. Senior Forward, Jerry Chandler, led the Eagle's scoring with I6' points. Charleston, defending KVC champs, tired before a fast, sharp-shooting Eagle Squad as Jerry Chandler and Alex Hawkins bucketed I7 points apiece and guard, Roy Haning, tallied I4, the Eagles won 65-48. In the second game with Dunbar, one of the three teams to defeat SC during the season, the full offen- sive power of Jamison's Cagers was realized as they trounced the Bulldogs 63-38. Jack Shamblin, re- bounding in superb fashion, tallied I4 points to equal Jerry Chandler's output as they tied in high scoring honors. Roy Haning and Senior Center, Joe Stroupe, added I2 and II points, respectively, in the display of team balance. The speedy Chemists stormed over the taller but less capable Nitro Wildcats 70-40. Joe Stroupe led in the scoring parade with I4 points and Jerry Chand- ler continued to keep his steady scoring pace with I3 markers. ' East Bank, occupying second place in the KVC, overcame the hustling Black Eagles' lead in the last minute of the game to take a 62-56 decision. High scorers in the rugged battle were Jerry Chandler and Alex Hawkins with I9 points and I7 points, re- spectively. Deadly shooting accuracy gave the Chemists an early lead against DuPont which they never relin- quished in dropping the Panthers 78-70. Hitting on 55'X9 of their shots, Chandler and Hawkins bucketed I9 markers and I8 markers, respectively, and Joe Stroupe cashed in on I5., South Charleston moved into third place in the KVC by means of a 77-67 victory over a good St. Albans team. Jerry Chandler scored 32 points in the exciting game as his- long, jumping one-handers swished the net in a good percentage of his tries. Joe Stroupe, rebounding well, scored I8 points. Stonewall Jackson's champion Generals released a scoring avalanche and smothered the Eagles 9I-58 as they controlled the rebounds and sunk a very high percentage of their shots. Jack Johnson, versatile reserve, earned a first team berth in this game as he led the reserves- in floor play and headed the scoring column with I4 points. Charleston Catholic, holding first place in the KVC, fell before the speedy Chemists 73-57 in losing their first contest of the season. Again it was Jerry Chan- dler who led SC, bucketing 24 points. Jack Johnson rebounded and passed to set up several scores hitting Page One Hundred Sixteen the hoop for I2 points. Joe Stroupe threw in II, A balanced attack proved the difference in the second encounter with Dupont. Chandler and Hawkins scored I5 each, Johnson came through with I4 and Stroupe hit for I2. After gaining an early 20-7 lead, the Eagles went on to soundly trounce the Belle quintet 75-44. Expert shooting and a dependable fast break prov- ed to be deciding factors in the Clendenin scrap as Jerry Chandler and Sophomore Jim Smith, the two side men of the Eagle fast break scored 25 points and I2 points, respectively. Jack Shamblin, hustling rebounder, rounded out the top scorers with I2. Wheeling High School, displaying a slow, deliberate style of ball, failed to keep pace with SC's fast break- ing Black Eagles as Alex Hawkins and Roy Haning mastered the 86-66 win. Haning, playing his best game of the season, topped all scorers with a 2I point effort. The Eagles journeyed to Beckley and solidly de- feated the Flying Eagles 67-59. Jerry Chandler ex- hibited a great style of jump shooting and driving speed as he took top scoring honors with 28 points. Haning scored I2. A last half surge by ci tall, rugged East Bank team gave the Pioneers a win over South Charleston. Alex Hawkins, though hampered by the Pioneers' height in starting the fast break, tallied I6 points. The Black Eagles defeated a rough Huntington cage team in an overtime period which climaxed one of the season's most action-packed games. Guard Alex Hawkins, with a cool and calm deliberateness of purpose, directed the Eagles throughout the four regular periods, With the some tranquility Hawkins sank two foul shots in the overtime addition-those shots won the game for the Eagles. Jerry Chandler led all scorers with 28 while Hawkins tallied I7. The St. Albans Red Dragons fell before the bal- anced SC aggregation as Alex Hawkins scored his season's high of 24 points. Seeking revenge for an early season defeat, the Chemists gave Stonewall Jackson its biggest scare of the season before the Generals pulled away to win 74-64. With Jerry Chandler gathering 32 points, the Eagles came within three points of the Generals in the last two minutes of the contest, but time con- sumed the winning hopes of the Eagle fans and contestants. Charleston Catholic led briefly in the early min- utes before SC came on to take the lead and gradu- ally pull away to win the game 80-6I. Forward Jack Shamblin played his season's best offensive game- he led the SC scorers with I8 points. Jack Johnson added I7j Alex Hawkins, I3j Joe Stroupe, I2, and Jerry Chandler rounded out the top scorers with I0 as five Chemists hit in the double figures. The Black Eagles closed out their regular season with a triumph over a weak Charleston team as SC's balance continued to pay off. ln the 78-6I victory, four Eagle cagers were credited with the double fig- ures. Roy Haning led with I7 points, Hawkins tossed in I6p Chandler had I5, Jack Johnson gathered I2, Jack Shamblin tallied 9.
