Louis DeVaughn and Jimmie Monroe Two boys are responsible for the extraordinary lighting and staging of the assemblies and shows at South Charleston High School-Jimmy Monroe and Louis De Vaughn. This dynamic duo served in the capacity of stage directors for three years. Some of their most successful undertakings were: Lion's Club Minstrel, Fashion Shows, Junior and Senior Class Plays, Choir Recitals and Talent Show. An example of their talent for realistic sound effects was the record they made of a train wreck-the same train wreck you heard when you attended the Junior Class Play. Much time and effort was consumed in the making of this record, but Jim and Louie came through with flying colors. In addition to all the time they have spent on staging, Jim and Louie still found time to be active members of the Junior Academy of Science and the Latin Club, and both took part in the National Science Talent Search. Jim was awarded the Bausch and Lomb Science Award and Louis is a member of the National Honor Society. If their high school work is an indication of their later life, the graduating class of '52 predicts a great future for both of them. Through her friendli- ness, capability, and experience, she was elected student president of our school. Barbara, although having many responsibilities as a president, is always ready and willing to co-operate with her fellow classmates as well as the faculty, in order to keep our school rating high. Her attractiveness and pleasing disposition has made Barbara popular, not only with the students of our school, but also with the students of the neighboring schools. Many of the activities in which Bobby has taken part include: National Honor Society, Red Cross, Girls' State, Girls' Nation, and the Annual Staff. Last fall she attended the Southern Student Council meeting in Shreveport, Louisiana, as a representative of our high school. We, the class of 1952, are proud to have had Barbara as our very capable leader as well as our friend. TUDENT COUNClL ' Sis fl Vs kv .1 , ,... SEASON'S RECORD ...... ........ 4 6 0 PIGSKIN REVIEW The South Charleston Black Eagles opened their 1951 football campaign against the DuPont Panthers and ended up on the short end of an 18 to 7 score. Outstanding were Gary Chittum and John Sawyer as Gale Jackson scored the only SC touchdown. Chittum added the extra point. The Eagles traveled to Laidley Field only to fall to the Charleston Mt. Lions. Cap- tain Buz Bodkin was named Linernan of the Week for his spectacular defensive play. SC O-Chas. 13. The Huntington Central Pony Express, scoring three times in the first six minutes, handed South Charleston its worst defeat of the season. Another TD was added to make it SC 0-Central 27. The Chemical City boys finally broke into the win column with a 20-12 victory over Seth. J. B. Davis, Rick Fisher, and West Med- ley each crossed the goal line once and Doc Sherrill added two extra points. At home for the second time, Web- ster's Black Eagles encountered the Milton Greyhounds who bowed to SC by 14 to 6. Bernie Cavender and Sherrill each collected a TD and Doc again booted the extra points in deciding the Eagles' second win in a row. Climaxing a three game winning streak, the SC eleven upset a favored East Bank team at Calvert Field. An East Bank fumble and a punt return by Bob Means re- sulted in two early touchdowns and Bodkin added another by recovering an East Bank fumble behind their goal line. Two extra points by Sherrill made it 20- 0, South Charleston. The Pirates of Barboursville visited Oakes Field the next Saturday and left with a 13 to 7 victory. The Black Eagles, sparked by the line play of Bob Watkins and Herk Hawkins, led the Pirates in yardage gained, but failed to capitalize on the breaks. Means scored on a quarter-back sneak and the reli- able Sherrill converted. An injury-ridden Eagle squad again gained more yardage but again tasted defeat, this time to Saint Albans. The ends, John Mandeville and Don Daniels, both played good ball as Mandeville snared a pass for the only SC score. Final score: SC 6-SA 12. Paul Payne and Melvin Vaughn stood out for the host team, but Charleston Catho- lic had more power in the snow and upset the Black Eagles 13 to 7. A freshman, Bill Prince White, scored the only SC touch- down in his first varsity game after watching the first half from the stands. The Dunbar Bulldogs, one of the bet- ter teams in the state, invaded Oakes Field for the traditional Lions Club Trophy game sporting a season record of 8 wins and 1 loss. Dunbar had won the two previous years and another Black Eagle defeat would have given the prized silver trophy a final resting place in the Bulldog Trophy Case. But the Eagles had their own ideas about who had the better team and set about proving it by sending the Bulldogs home in defeat. White again got the TD as the game that will long be remembered by a score ofz6 to 0. SENIOR SQUAD MEMBERS Pictured from Left to Right are: Melvin Vaughn, Buz Bodkin, Bob Watkins, Paul Payne, Bob Means, J. B. Davis, and John Sawyer. These seven seniors have compiled a total of 18 seasons of football at SCHS. Although the '51 record was only 4 and 6, these seniors carried the bulk of the work and contributed to many of the highlights of the season. Melvin Vaughn, converted from cen- ter to end, played for two years. Mel liked playing in the Dunbar game especially. He also played three years each of baseball and basketball. Captain Buz Bodkin likes to remember the Dunbar game, too. He played four sea- sons, lettering the last three. Bob Watkins, a dependable two-year guard, got his biggest thrill in the Dunbar win. The other guard, Paul Payne, like Watkins, was a two-year man and liked the Dunbar game. Bob Means played four seasons at halfback and quarterback. The Bulldog upset was his favorite. One boy who liked the Seth game CWhat's this ?J was J. B. Davis, a two year backfield man who also played baseball and basketball. John Sawyer, center, played football two years, although his big sport was basket- ball. He liked the Dunbar game. 1-74 MAKING PLANB No, this isn't.a study in biology, merely the SC coaching staff mapping out a new play at Oakes Field. Assistant coaches Jamison and Ruby look on as head coach Weber explains his plan of strategy. SETTING UP A TD . . . and the Black Eagles carry out the plan of action by beating Dunbar. Above is Don Daniels attempting to cross the Dunbar goal line after grabbing a pass thrown by Don fS'herri11. The score ,came one play later as Bill mite gicked over. Second row: Chester Adkins, Neil Swisher, Cebe Price, Butch Davis, Bobby Jarvis, Sonny Holstem Paul Under wood, Jerry Chandler. One of the greatest athletic teams in SCHS history, the 1951-'52 basketball squad finished the regular season with an amazing 18-2 won-lost record, losing only to Charles- ton and Beckley. A smashing victory over Charleston, cli- maxing Kanawha Valley Conference action, brought the KVC Championship title to the Chemical City school for the first time. With the exception of freshman Neil Swisher, every player on the Black Eagle squad was a junior, giving Coach Jamison good reason to look optimistically to the future. Our most sincere congratulations to a fine team- Good luck, boys. BASKETBALL REVIEW The Eagles warmed up with an easy 56 to 21 win over Dunbar. Paul Underwood paced the attack with 17 points. With Cebe Price and Dave Hoffman chalking up 14 markers each, SC followed up with a 56 to 39 victory over a stubborn Alumni five. Playing on the cramped Mt. Lion floor, J amison's crew lost the all important Charles- ton High game. Paced by Cebe Price's 19 tallies, the Black Eagles led until Charleston grabbed the lead in the final seconds, and lost by a tight 52 to 50 count. Paul Workman's Clendenin Cardinals were next on the Eagles' list and were handed a 51 to 36 trouncing. Price supplied the extra punch by tossing in 12 points. The Chemical City quintet again poured it on a hapless Dunbar squad, this time by 60 to 32, as Hoffman dumped in 21 for the winners. With center Jim Holstein out with the flu, the Black Eagles traveled to Hurricane and came out on top with 73 points to Hurri- cane's 60. SC's Mighty Juniors were headed by Bobby Jarvis, Holstein's replacement, who chalked up 18 big markers. The East Bank Pioneers gave SC a scare by leading the Eagles going into the fourth quarter, but couldn't hold the pace as Price headed a late rally which made the final count SC 43-EB 37. Cebe Price dumped in 13 points for the night. Win number five in the Kanawha Val- ley Conference came against the DuPont Panthers as the Juniors of SC won a thriller by a score of 66 to 43. High for the winners were Paul Underwood and Cebe Price with 17 markers each. Raymond Miller exhibited his ability to score, pitching in 17 points, as the Black Eagles took a tough St. Albans Five 58 to 46. Stonewall Jackson's Generals put up a real scrap in a game that was tight all the way, but the scrappy Eagles' were not to be denied and came out on top, 75 to 64. One of the highest individual scores of the KVC race was chalked up by leaping Cebert Price who shot from every angle for 33 big points. Improving steadily, Jamison's shoot- ing artists swamped the Irish from Charles- ton Catholic for their eighth KVC victory. Price had another good night, banging in 26 points, as SC emerged the victors by a score of 67 to 42. Coming from behind, the Black Eagle five continued their winning ways with a 58 to 51 victory over the Panthers at DuPont. Price led with 17 points, 12 of them coming in the fourth quarter. In another tight game, in which the score was tied with 50 seconds left, SC nosed out Clendenin 61 to 57. Leaping Cebert Price again led the Eagle scoring by pushing 19 tallies into the hoop. Fifteen straight points in the third quarter by South Charleston, coupled with a questionable foul called against Huntington Central team, resulted with the Huntington coach removing his team from the floor. South Charleston, ahead at that point by 51 to 38, was sparked by Price's 22 markers. SC boosted its KVC record to 11-1 by knocking off East Bank 39-30, as Price pushed in 13 points. Coach Jamison treated his squad to a trip to Princeton and they responded by crushing the Tigers 72-62. High for the night was Price with a total of 24. Beckley, the defending state champs, handed the Eagles their second loss of the '51-'52 season by a count of 65-34. Price had 15 for the losers. The Chemical City five took over first place in the KVC by virtue of a 69-52 win over St. Albans. Price had 26 points for the win- ners. The Generals from Stonewall Jack- son, always a threat, bowed to the SC ma- chine 55-47 at the Morris Harvey field house. Price threw in 26 points for the night. BASKETBALL SC 54 ......., ......... Lions defeated Clen- denin to set the stage for the Game of the Year between the two. Price tallied 13 for the winners as Catholic fell 58-45. The championship game at the Mor- ris Harvey field house, viewed by a record crowd of 3,200, was a fitting climax to one of the most interesting seasons of KVC his- tory. The game itself was not decided until the final whistle, a story book affair that kept the spectators on their feet to the end. CHS led at the half by 30-27, after the first quarter ended in a 16-16 deadlock. Ray Miller and Dave Hoffman helped to tie it up again at the end of the third before SC took the lead and went ahead to win 57-54. Price fin- ished a great season with 18 points for the night. SPORTS IN SHORTS In December of this term the first floor gym was booming with excitement when the four volleyball teams consisting of Senior, Junior, Sophomore and Freshmen teams began to liven the school. The first game was played between the Senior and Junior teams on December 10. This thrilling game marked up scores of 39-20 in favor of the Juniors. The second game which was played on December 11 the Sophomores vaulted over the Freshmen with a 21 point lead. The final score was 36-15. On December 12 the final volleyball game of the season was played between the undefeated Junior and Sophomore teams.
