If this volume provides a mirror into which outsiders may look for a reflection of our student life, or if it helps to preserve the friendships and memories we have formed here, our efforts .shall not have been in vain. Our greatest hope is that our yearbook may be a source of enjoyment to those who constitute our high school and uphold its ideals. ra stay I L I l -- -. VVhy it is a child In our classrooms and halls it is seen, You know what it is, 'cause its knowledge is mild And its skin is peculiarly green. Sophomores are less strange, so they are harder to find But search for them and youill know the score, You'11 see they are pleasing, and often rather kind And they value upper classmen like an apple would its core Now the juniors are one of those upper classes They eat at the Black Eagle and buy sodas that fizz, Yes, theylre pretty nice lads and pretty swell lasses There's only one thing better, wanna know what that is? Well, any- way it was memorable, because a new fresh- man class arrived. VVith shining eyes and shaking knees, we entered the doors opened to us. That first day was really an experience. There were people everywhere, and rows and rows of halls that seemed to lead no place. With the typical brightness and intelligence of our class, however, we took this in our stride and soon we even became adept in finding our classes on time. For our presi- dent, we chose Tom Henson. Terry Lilly, jack Swisher, Charlie Quick, Paul Smith, and Dan Ballengee were our contributions to the foot- ball squad. Somehow we got through the freshman year, and the next fall we were a step higher on the scholastic ladder as Sophomores. The most important thing about this year was that we werenit Freshmen anymore. This year, under the leadership of Paul Smith, our class started gaining honors. Steve Atkinson, Charlie Williams, Donald Atkinson and Gary Smith joined the football squad, By now, six majorettes and five cheerleaders had been chosen from our numbers. Page F orty-eight The following year, we all assembled again with a renewed vigor and a strong purpose to accomplish great things, as we were then the inheritors of a new dignity. As juniors, we could enjoy ourselves at S. C. H. S. and yet have another year to look forward to. We found much work to be done, and we started it wholeheartedly. We sponsored the junior Senior Prom, and it was a big success. We elected Paul Smith as our president. Becky Evans was sent by the class to Cirl's State and Paul Smith and Kenny Holmboe to Boy's State during the Summer vacation. Finally we were Seniors. Our able Presi- dent was Oral Withrow. The highlights of this year included: the winning of Pep Week, Ruth Kinder, our Miss Black Eagle, the Senior Class Play, Suddenly It Was Mayliig the Snow F estivalg The junior-Senior Prom, and of course Commencement. And so, after four years of diligent labor, examinations, ques- tions, sleepless nights, detention hall and spit- wads, we, the Class of 1950, feel we are ably prepared for that world of strife which we are about to enter. As we take our leave of these halls of learning we feel a distinct sense of loss, for we now have only our memories. But gratitude will live long in our hearts for the knowledge we have gained. -NANCY Doucms .I RUTH KINDER and ATTENDANTS 3 Chu- Al.N'IA iimms Mm, fx Pugv Fifty Pm :CY I-IAL1 Our Ambitions 0 AS OUR CLASS is outstandingly ambitious, we would like to give you a picture of what the future holds in store for them. C. 31-Madison 0 The outlook on the football season at South Charleston was very bright to S. C. fans for the first two games. The season was started off by the brilliant running of star halfback, Steve Atkinson, with a dashing run of 90 yards on the opening kickoff of the season. Steve followed this by rolling over another touchdown. Scores were made then by Layer on a pass and Quick on a buck from about the eight yard line. Smith, the captain of the squad, played an inspiring game with his bone-smashing tackles and good judgment. Came ended S. C. - 31 Madison - 0. s. c. zo-Mr. Hope 12 S. C. marched to a 20-12 victory over high- ly regarded Mt. Hope with Atkinson going 50, 8, and 10 for the three counters. Smith and Bird played bang-up ball for the Eagles. Boy, that ball game really was wet! With the rain drizzling in your eyes, you could hardly see the players who were slipping and sliding all over the field. S. C. 6-Huntington 28 Webermen fall to Huntington. Those were the headlines. The Eagles fought hard for this one because it was tough, but the High- landers were too much for us. Charlie Quick scored our only touchdown after a long drive down the field by Means, Hawkins, Layer, and Quick. Page N inety S. C. 7-Stonewall 26 We really took it on the chin for this one. Remember the game of last year when we outplayed them in the first half only to lose out in the last half? Well, we reversed it this year and out-fought them in the end. The game, watched by 4,000, was highlighted for S. C. fans by Paul Smith's punts and the de- fensive work of Hawkins and Bird. The sea- son was blackened for Stonewall by the fact that Bob Means scored our first touchdown against them in three years. S. C. 0-East Bank 13 This game produced the only shutout of the season against the Eagles. The field was wet, the spectators were wet, the players were wet, and the ball was wet. All these things were factors against the squad. Dolan started it off on the second play of the game by going 84 yards for the score. S. C. made a valiant try and even stopped the Pioneers on the 2 inch when Downey Bird threw the runner for a loss. S. C. 13-Borboursville 26 There were only about 2,000 people in the stands of Oakes Field on this cold, clear Sat- urday of October 22. Paul Smith made both of the Eagles, tallies in this game on a much used fake kick which was one of South Charlestonis best plays in the 349 season. Although they played hard and fast football, Football History the Eagles were outclassed by their visitors to the tune of S. C. 13 - Barboursville 26. This game was highlighted by the brilliant line play of Gary Smith and Terry Lilly. S. C. 6-St. Albans 33 Though they went down fighting. a quick look at the score books reveal that the battling Webermen from S. C. suffered a decisive de- feat f38-Gj in their third and last away game of the ,49 season at the hands of the St. Albans Pied Dragons. So. Charlestoifs only score came late in the second quarter when they drove 80 yards. The spark plugs for the Eagles both defensively and offensively were: Downey Bird, Eddie Garrett, Walter White and as always, Paul Smith turned in a memor- able performance. S. C. 13-Catholic 18 The last minutes of play made the difference in one of the most exciting games played on Oakes Field in many-a-year. South Charles- ton's first score was set up by the brilliant back field play of Means, Atkinson. and Quick. Garrett then took possession of the ball and crashed over for the tally. Skippy Hawkins kicked the point after the touchdown. Their drive in the second half began as 'gHerkie Hawkins covered a fumble for the Eagles. A pass by Quick and two smashing sprints by Garrett put the Eagles ahead 18-6. S. C. fans were happy, but not for long, the Irish un- leashed their passing attack and went on to win 18-13. S. C. 6-Dunbar 26 The South Charleston eleven fought brave- ly and gallantly to win possession of the Lion's Club trophy permanently as they ended their 1949 season at Oakes Field on Nov. 12, but their efforts were fruitless. The Eagles were snowed under by an avalanche of touchdowns heaped upon them by the Dunbar Bulldogs. Charles Layer's brilliant play set up the only score for the Eagles, and Eddie Garrett then crashed over the 3 yard line for the score. Brilliant play was turned in by Downey Bird, Paul Smith and the entire South Charleston football squad. The football season, this year, although looking very dark from the spectators' view- point, and had a few good points. The team was composed of a number of lower classinen who turned in excellent performances in some games. VVe all hope these boys live up to expectations next year and begin S. C. on an- other long trek to bring the title of State Champions back to our school many times. Page Ninety one Papa' Ninvly-fu'u U etb S f. OJ n. Z' .1 ff -4 I, if , ff LJ ,-. The Eagles looked like a dream team as Coach Buck Jamison unleashed his attack with his first team at South Charleston High. The Eagle defense was impenetrable, and the scoring offensive work of Swisher, Farley, Turley, and Allen soon told the tale. The Mountain Lions were outclassed while the classy Eagles put on a display of their power. Pappy', XVorkman brought his Clendenin Cardinals to town on january 6 and trimmed the Eagles 65-59, showing off the brilliant re- bound work of Pete W'hite. the high scorer in the Conference, to great advantage. The superior Cardinals fought an uphill battle all the way, and finally rode to victory over the scrappy Eagles. The offensive work of the team still brought cheers as their set shots and hooks swished in. Turley led with 15 points. As a supposed away game was switched to the supposed away team, the Dunbar Bull- dogs. The very scrappy Bulldogs put on a great show, as time and time again the speed and quickness of Paul Jones and Company stole the ball only to throw it in the hoop. The Eagles fought hard for this one, but Dun- bar outscrapped them. Still this was another team shoved on to a long string of victories by South Charleston. The going was tough as every team in the conference boasted of an uprising group of athletes, and South was one of them. They had as much material this year as theyill ever have, but just couldnit keep the consistent pace. Alfred Farley paced the Eagles with twelve points. The power of last year's Charleston Catholic team reigned no longer, as South Charleston caught on fire in the final quarter to dump the Irish 49-40. Again it was Swisher, Farley, Turley, and Allen that brought the cheers, and also Bruce Williams who came in as a substitute and paced the Eagles. Tuffy Layer and Fred Turley were top-house men forhSouth Charleston with fourteen points eac . South Charleston then turned to face the Pioneers of East Bank who displayed their junior High all-state forward, Mike Holt, to the twice beaten Eagles. Holt is one of the coolest boys in a ball game I have even seen, and he showed it as he led the Pioneers to a 60-50 victory over the Eagles. jack Swisher was high with sixteen points. The Eagles caught on fire against the Princeton Tigers as they soared over the Tigers 53-34. The Eagles were in no danger throughout the game, as Goose, Turley, jack Swisher, and Hahn Allen dropped in sixteen, thirteen, and twelve points, respectively. Coach Jamison then took his squad into the territory of the high-flying Pied Dragons, and promptly was bumped: off. Fouls were the main cause of the defeat, as before the final gun all five of the regulars had fouled out, but sparked by the brilliant play of our David Hoffman, the Eagles up within two points until the Dragons dropped two more big points in to sew up the game. David Hoffman stepped from the roll of a substitute to a star the night of the Stonewall and South Charleston game, as he came into the game in the final quarter and rammed in thirteen points, including the overtime period, which was brought on by Bruce Williams' game typing foul shot. But from then on Hoffman fired and fired connecting on a large percentage until his total rose to thirteen points. He was overshadowed in this Stone- wall Generals,' defeat by Goose Turley with seventeen points. Holmes of Stonewall kept the Generals in the ball game with twenty-one points followed by Marrion with eleven points. Stonewall was leading the en- tire conference at the time and South Charles- ton knocked them off their throne by a 66-63 score. The next two games with Catholic and Du- Pont gave the Eagles more strength in the conference as they handed the Irish a 64-44 defeat, and after scoring twenty-one points in the final quarter, scored a decisive victory over the Panthers, 56-46. Hahn Allen and Fred Turley provided the spark plug for the Eagles win over DuPont by dropping in six- teen points each. Page Ninety five BASKETBALL On the night of February 4, the Eagles of South Charleston ambushed the Huntington Central Pony Expressi' ball club by trouncing them to the tune of 62-57. This game was highlighted by a magnificent shot by guard Hahn Allen. Allen took a tip-off from the Huntington back board and whipped an 80- foot pass to Fred Turley which. to the amaze- ment of all, swished through the South Charleston hoop. This, incidentally was Senior night at the Recreation Center and all Seniors were admitted free. The gym of Clendenin was packed to see the Cardinals beat the Chemists to the lop- sided score of 52-35. Swisher paced the Eagles with nine points. This was the first loss for the Chemists in five games. In one of the biggest up-sets of the season, the DuPont Panthers swamped the Eagles to the score of 58-48 on the Panther's floor, Feb- ruary 10. South Charleston's big gun in this game was again Fred Turley with twenty-two points. Iamisorfs Eagles took their second defeat of the season from the East Bank Pioneers on February 17. In a game that was extremely slow, the Pioners held a 61-55 advantage when the final buzzer was sounded. Turley again paced the Eagles with twenty points. Upon completing a road trip which took them to Beckley and Princeton, February 17, and 18, the Eagles returned to South Charles- ton with a .500 batting averagef' While meeting the Flying Eaglesl' of Beckley on the night of the 17th, the Chemists suffered their fourth defeat in a row, 49-42. This, however, was overshadowed by the upset that South Charleston pulled on the Princeton Tigers on the following night 64-32. Turley tallied twenty-three points against Beckley, and Alfred Farley tallied fourteen points for South Charleston against Beckley. The Eagles of South Charleston just couldn't get up the steam they had in an earlier tilt with the Stonewall Generals, and they were defeated to the tune of 62-44. This could have been due to the fact that the game was played in the Morris Harvey Field House, Page N inet y-six -S- but no matter where it was played. it went on record as a defeat. Turley was high with eighteen points. Avenging earlier losses to two Kanawha Valley teams, the Eagles defeated the St. Albans Dragons 67-50 February 23, and turn- ed back the Bulldogs of Dunbar 54-49. In the St. Albans game, Swisher really got hot by slipping in six of nine long shots. Turley was high with twenty-three, and Swisher ran not far behind with fourteen points. In a thriller of a contest, the Eagles soared over the Bulldogs on the night of February 28. The score was tied seven times in the first half and this provided a closethriller for the fans. Fred Turley played one of his best games of the season by scoring twenty-eight points. Alfred Farley was second high man for the Eagles with twelve markers. In another exciting game the Black Eagles edged out the Mt. Lions at South Charleston March 13. This game was also tied seven times in the first period. The Eagles held a slim lead of 26-24 at half-time. But in the second half the tide changed and the South Charleston boys were never behind for the rest of the game. Turley was tops with seventeen points and Hahn Allen turned in another bang-up performance by dropping in fifteen markers. As the Section 22 toumament games started in the South Charleston Recreation Center, the Black Eagles of South Charleston team could only get 24 points in the entire game with high-point Fred Goose Turley drop- ping in only four points. The Eagles were far off the range while the Red Dragons pot- ted forty-one points with King leading the attack. This was a great drawback to the South Charleston fans, as they were sure of this one. The Red Dragons then advanced to the next and final game of the toumament.
