Art classes develop creativity Painting, crafts, drawing, and other areas in the field of art were studied by art students. They learned that art was for everyone and was applicable in everyday life. Math helps students “solve problems” The mathematics department con- sisted of five different subjects. These included: Algebra I, Plane Geometry, Algebra II, General Math and Senior Math. All courses were basically new math. Each student in high school was required to take some math course for one year. Mary and Peg find out to understand Senior Math they need to spend a great deal of time working. Carol, Dave, and Bruce listen carefully to Mr. Janowsky. Hares hides his head for not being able to answer. Geometry comes easy for some, but others have to work hard for their grades. 24

Valuable skills for effective home life Martha and Kathleen find discussion valuable in home ec. The home economics department was available to students in grades eight through twelve to both boys and girls. The home ec classes studied subjects such as: foods, clothing, personality, courtship and marriage, and various other aspects of home life. Also in this department was the family living class where areas of study were: personality, friendship, dress, manners, dating, marriage, and family relations. Wayne watches Linda, Steve, and Jim experiment with a new recipe. Mrs. Jessup opens her gifts at the baby shower given in her honor by her students. Karen, Diana, Jerry and Jackie sample the food they parepared in family living class. Wayne and Bonnie find that the last step to prepar- ing a meal is doing the dishes. 26
