SPANNING THE GLOBE Somebody might ask. Why should you leave for a year when you have friends and a family you love over in Japan.' ' M main reason to be an exchange student is to challenge myself, to be independent from my parents, to learn how to solve different problems, and to take care of myself. When I came to the I S . I felt something really strange Kverything was different and new There were no people who knew me Nobody used chopsticks. And worst of all. nobody spoke Japanese I learned a lot of things about the I SA and English before I came over here, but it is not the same as coming here and seeing everything for myself. I've seen a lot of different cultures, peoples, and lifestyles and realized there is not only one way of doing things that Im used to. I'm trying to act )ust like a typical American boy to find mam ideas about Americans and to make a lot of friends. Making friends is the best way to learn their social life, and it makes it a lot of fun' High school is a lot different from Japan My Japanese high school is a boys high school, and we have to wear uniforms We don't have school buses in Japan We can use the public buses, train, and bicycle 1 saw a lot of activities at S.C.: football, basketball (gets loud). Homecoming, dances, prom, special days when we dress up like Halloween, and so on. Everything was a good experience for me I've had a lot of fun in the U.S. 1st learned more about mvself. I'm glad that I came here, and also I m glad to be a Japanican . 11 Kenji Kato A Say Cheese Hi! My name is Gustavo. I came from Bogota. Colum- bia. on January IV 198?. to share with you six months of my life, because I wanted to meet new people, culture, and a different style of life, and to learn English. I've had a good time living in the USA When I got here I didn't know what to expect It impressed me the way you think about Columbia, but I see it is easy to understand after watching some TV programs or reading an American newspaper I would like to say that everything is not as it seems to be Columbia is a beautiful country which possesses a lot of natural resources, interesting places and kind people Unfortunately, the bad view is the only one known, but I am proud to be a Columbian and I am completely sure I wouldn't change it for any other country in the world. I hope I left you with a good impression about myself and my country, and I hope you can go to Columbia some- day to know what it really is like. I have enjoyed your company as I hope you have enjoyed mine. I want to thank you for having been kind to me. and I want you to know that I will never forget my exchange student time in America, and you can be sure I will never forget all of you. 16 Gustavo Ordonez Hola!
