Time for Celebration as the Viking Band Marches Through Another Championship Season Striving on pride, dedication, determination and the Greatest Love - the Viking Marching Band, for the third consecutive year, captured the Eastern Marching Band Association Class I Championship title under the direction of Mark and Ginny Kraft and perrcussion instructor Larry Kuzel. The moment to be remembered by all of the band members was when it was announced that they had cap- tured the title with a record breaking score of 90.55. Not only was it enough to recieve first place but also to bring home trophies for best auxilaryfcolorguard and best mar- ching executiong plus a New jersey State Championship plaque and a Superior Rating plaque awarded to any band achieving a score higher than 90.0. Emotion soared high throughout the band as shouting tears of happiness and accomplishment poured from their eyes. We did it! , shouted Mr. Kraft as he hugged one of the band members. All of those hours spent at practice every Monday and Wednesday evening and on Saturday mornings in mud left from the previous days rainfall or the chill from a settling fall night, all payed off. A six day band camp at Camp Nuemann during the week of August 25 gave the band a lead to the perfection of their winning show yet, the EMBA Championships in Little Falls, NJ. wasn't the only place that the band performed for an excited audience. The Viking Band made appearances at six other competitions including their home show- The Tournament of Champions and shows held at Steinert H.S., West Windsor-Plainsboro H.S., Arlington H.S. in Poughkeepsie, NY., Franklin H.S. and Morris Knolls H.S. where at each they marched away with first place trophies and numerous special awards. These included Best Perr- cussion overall at the Franklin show and Best Overall Band at Morris Knolls. The band was also invited to appear at the opening ceremonies of South Street Seaport, on September 11, in New York and made their annual appearances at the Princeton P-RADE, the fourth of july parade, our Homecoming parade and all of our high school football games to entertain during pre-game and half-time shows. The band's second undefeated season leaves them with good spirits and high hopes for another championship season next year. 17.2

jazzin' It p in Style! This year was busy for those involved in our high school jazz Ensemble. Not only did the members dedicate their time to practice and perfection, but also into attending numerous performances. The students' love of music made them jubiliant and successful. The Ensemble was not only involved in the three concerts within our school, the Holiday Concert, Winter Concert, and Spring Concert, but also showed their ex- pertise at various jazz Ensemble competi- tions. These included competitions in Burlington, Connecticut and Middlesex High School plus the annual Trenton State College jazz Festival. The band also hosted it's own competition on March 6. This was the fourth annual held at South Brunswick High School. The ensemble also included special activities into their season. Among these was the invitation for the U.S. Air Force Band, from Mc Guire Air Force Base, to come and perform for our school. That day was an absolute success. The band was wonderful and all of the students enjoyed it to their fullest otential by BOPPIN in the stands andjsome even on the floor. Another big event for the Ensemble was their trip to Morristown, New jersey on january 30 to perform at the closing ceremonies of the Special Olympics. This year's jazz Ensemble was a great success and hopes that the tradition will continue. sg . . -tr r fifls z , ft .ff . N2 mit AIIWM ,, Play that guitar baby!
