GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM COMES UP Frustrating, exahusting, and disap- poniting tells the story of what these ten girls went through, out on the basketball court this season. A short- age of height, experience, and pa- tience were main factors in not being able to celebrate many victories. But despite all the losses, these girls kept their heads up and showed up for practice the next day. They could have gave up when things got a little hot, but everyone kept their cool and stuck it out. Being a young and inexperienced team made it very difficult for these girls to go up against such opponents as Bishop Ahr, JFK, and Carteret. But they did their best they could and worked hard to improve their game. The lady Vikes had very dedicated and determined players. The only senior on the team, Michelle Leung, put some speed into the game with a lot of fast breaks. The rest of the star- ting five consisted of, Natolie Mould, Tami Smith, Amy Killian, and Lara Hrinkevich, all juniors. The outlook for next year looks very promising, with a lot of young players returning. If they can just get off on the right foot we will be hear- ing a lot more about the lady Vikes. Melanie DeMaio drives to the basket. 158

Everyone gave it their all right down to the very end. The girls shuttle-hurtle team, Joanne Hampstead, Rosanne Cetta, Marie Niper and Debbie Fischer, ran away with ist place in the East Brunswick Relays and leaped into 2nd place in the State Tornament. Not to mention, placing 6th in the Princeton Relays, competing against the top teams from the east. Seniors Joanne Hampstead and Ar- ba Holliday went on to compete in The Meet of Champiansf' Also, in the State Tornament, Joanne placed 4th in the high jump and 5th in the high hurtles. While, teamate, Arba Holliday placed Sth in the 55m dash. Lets not forget the strong relay team: Lisa Charters, Arba Holliday, Sue Albanir, Michele Gindraux and Karen Young. They worked together and finished up the season placing 2nd in our conference. The boys 4 by 200 relay team finished the season as group II State Champians. Roland Burnett, Budu Mireku, Scott Johnson and Alan Albanir, also went on to win at the East Brunswick Relays. Unfortunately, the guys team was small, but still performed in all dual meets, invitational and conference meets. Senior, Scott Johnson came through by running in every event from the 200 to the 1600. Alan Albanir was heading towards a great season, in the 400, until he got in- jured. But, Budu Mireku came through as a sprinter to add onto the spirtofrunning. 157
