It was but yesterday we met in a dream. You have sung to me in my aloneness, and I of your longings have built a tower in the sky. But now our sleep has fled and our dream is over, and it is no longer dawn. The noontide is upon us and our half waking has turned to fuller day, and we must part. If in the twilight of memory we should meet once more, we shall speak again together and you shall sing to me a deeper song. And if our hands should meet in another dream we shall build another tower in the sky. - - Kahlil Gibran THE PROPHET Congratulations to the Class of 1965 from THE CLASS OF 1966 THE PLAYERS would like to wish good luck to all the members of the Class of 1965 Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of 1965 from The Student Council Congratulations to the Class of 1965 from THE CLASS OF 1967 Delta Hardware, Inc. 3576 Lincoln Highway Franklin Park, N.J. V -f The sports campaign for the cross-country squad proved productive for coach Warner and the Viking harriers. Despite manyinjuries to key players which seri- ously hampered their chances of success, the har- riers worked their way to a 4-9-1 record behind the strong running of Brian Young and John Kimple. Among their achievements was the oddity of a tie meet, a 21 all deadlock with their Pennington counterparts. The numerous injuries restricted CoachWarner to a building year, and the improve- ment of the jayvee runners points to a successful season in the future. Wrestling L The matmen of S.B.H.S. have made an impression on the school which shall not he broken for years to come. This, the grap- plers second year of varsity competition, has shown the fruits of Coach Nyitrai's labor. The hoys have finished their season with a fine 7-5 record. NMNNNN- f x r Q 1 When you receive your diploma as a graduate of South Brunswick High School, you are successfully completing one important phase of your life and will imme- diately embark upon a new one. This new phase will have at least one thing in common with the previous one -- the pursuit of success. This quest may take place in a technical school, junior college, college, or in the world of work. In this search for success let us consider a quote from Wilford A. Peterson which states success is not confined to one part of your personality, but is related to the development of all parts: body, mind, heart and spirit. It is making the most of your total self. In this statement let us note that the words money, power, and position do not appear. This is, in myjudgement, because the real things in life, do not relate first to material comforts, but rather to personal health, a clear mind, and a clean heart and spirit which are not forever being plagued by our conscience because we have sought the wrong things in life. I hope that each member of this graduating class will take time to consider those things which bring lasting joy and then use them to develop the pattern of his or her life. In this way I am confident that each of you will experience the real joy of life which you are seeking and which I hope each of you will achieve. With these thoughts I offer my congratulations and best wishes to the class of l965. Walter Chesner 80 . Y , ,,' .1 A r , : . . 'smshaswmwjxnrnsfulxi'-wxmln -. -, lk y. In the Eighth Grade we entered SBHS for the first time, in awe of our strange new surroundings, and the seemingly ,all-knowing, all-powerful upperclassmen. As Freshmen, we were now able to look at the sev- enth and eighth graders disdainfully and comment on the need for their exclusion from the human race. As mature, sophisticated Sophomores, we elected officers, and began to acquire unity among the mem- bers of our class. We realized that acting as one body we could achieve many worthwhile goals. Evening in Paris, the theme of our junior Prom, grew from a rough floor plan sketch, to become the most beautiful, successful prom to be held at S.B.l-I.S. Our Senior Year represents the culmination of five wonderful years in this school. Harvey, the Senior play, Hootenanny '65, our Senior Trip, Senior Banquet, and finally Graduation, have brought happiness to each and every one of us, and perhaps a feeling of sadness, for as we receive our diplomas, we will be free to go on to higher learning. The higher learning of which college constitutes such a small part -- the higher learning that teaches one to let today embrace the future with longing and the past with remembrance . 81 S X xy!!! 1 ,,y, ,K vt . ,vw-4,2 . Under the capable guidance of Mr. Anthony Toto, our class Advisor, tasks like this seemed al- most possible. Mr. Toto has been more than an advisor to us during our junior and Senior years, he had been a friend. His interest in us, and his faith has never wa- vered, and our problems have been his problems. ln ourjunior year, Mr. Toto helped make An Evening In Paris, our junior Prom, a success. Without his able assistance we could never have undertaken the project of planning a prom. In our Senior year, Mr. Toto again served as our Advisor. The success of our fund raising projects were due, largely to Mr. Toto's intransigent refusal to accept NO for an answer. Through all the traumatic experiences of our senior year, Mr. Toto's friendship remained constant. To the boys on the football team, Mr. Toto, is synonomous with optimism and spirit. His excellent coaching enabled the team to achieve a 5-2-l season last year, and a terrific 8-l winning season this year. Mr. Toto's concern for us as individuals, as well as a class, has endeared him to us. ln all our associations he has continually greeted us with a friendly hello and a warm smile -- never a good-bye. As a lasting tribute to Mr. Toto, we, the Senior Class of 1965, wish to ded- icate VALHALLA '65 to him and we hope he will always remember it as a last - ing hellog never a good -bye. 84 Senior james Leonard President Lennie . . . a competant leader . . .the diplomatic type. . . ath- letically inclined . . . intelligent . . . a wonderful person to have around. . . fond memories of Kan- sas. Schubert's Mass in Cf was performed for the Spring Concert. The Chorus presented afall con- cert for the first time composed of lighter music with a Pops concert in the Spring. The 22 chorale members performed with the chorus and Barbershop quartet, a new addition this year, in each concert to fill the Senior High vocal music Department. l Eighth Grade Chorus 137 Newspaper The Viking Press, the monthly publication of S.B.H.S. has taken on a new light. As always the Viking Press stands out as one ofthe best representations ofthe student body. Besides reporting the news of the school the Viking Press has taken upon itself to form a Community GoodWill Week. Their drive to sponsor the David Ronthaler Memorial Shelf Of American Studies was one of the staffs admirable accomplishments. The success of the paper is due to the able moderating of Mrs. Janice Lehet and the leadership of Editor Dan Bibel. x XX Tf ' lb :Il 138 N ,QF : NX Student Council A Well-functioning administrative unit, the Student Council has gone far this year in fostering better student life. Under the supervision of Monroe Sprague and Mr. Walter Sikorski better school spirit has becomea major accomplishment. This goal has been fostered through organized activities comprising various clubs, student busses to away games, dances, pep rallies and Fri- day night bonfires. These were all achieved through the student councils efforts. A sense of leadership, the right to voice one's opinions and mutual co- operation were a few of its accomplishments. .ESF 139 The Band Plays On f I 1 4 The South Brunswick High School Band, under the supervision of Mr. Chauncey Chatten, has once again displayed a great develop- ment of the art of music. Their devotion to their Work has proved beneficial. This devotion can be noted as the band performed with a certain perfection in South Pacific, and again in the 1965 Pop's Con- cert. Avote of thanks must be given to Mr. Chatten and all students in the band who have honored South Brunswick with their perform- ances throughout the past year. Presents Harvey 7 Class of S lf the laughter emanating from the audi- ence during a comedy is indicative of the play, it must be assumed that the Senior Class rendition of Harvey was an unprece- dented hit. The cast was an inexperienced one, but performed with historic skill and poise eclipsing all previous degrees of ex- cellence achieved by Mr. Churchill Clark and his coterie of budding thespians .
