Bennett South Broward has been fortunate in having a Superin- tendent of Schools, Mr. U. J. Bennett, the Board of Educa- tion, actively interested citizens who have foreseen the rapid growth of South Florida and its accompanying school needs. Many difficulties in establishing adequate schools were encountered in this area. But the Superintendent and School Board with the able legal leadership of Mr. T. D. Ellis, Jr., began work on State legal technicalities. In 1947 a break was seen. Through cooperation of the citizenry led by Mr. Jake Watson the grateful people of South Broward were assured a high school on a par with the best in the country. We salute the men on these pages for their efforts in securing for us this fine school. ll'-i n. i.W so . Student Council, the governing body of the school, is composed of students elected by their classes to represent them in the Council. Among the many things that the Student Council accomplished this term, the most outstanding was the point system, set up by the Council to award students for outstanding achievement and participation in school activities. The Broward Follies, a series of skits, sponsored by the Student Council, was one of the highlights of the year. This production along with the concession stands operated at the basketball games were the Council's main money making proiects. 5- e COMMITTEE CHAIRMEN-Joe Spina and Wayne Kilgore, Concession Stands, Jill Rifkin, Constitutional Revision: Reba Sterling, Point Sys- tem, Jim Moore, Inner-Club Coun- cil, Ethel Amundson, Clubs' Sched- ules, Retha Wardrop, Broward Fol- lies: Joe Henium, Assembly Com- mittee. lliiillll Q-li li X 'bow K -X N px KICKI WISE-President S 1 Student checks out book with assistance of student librarian. A primary aim of this, the oldest service club on the campus, is to develop by precept and example a more intelligent, aggres- sive, and serviceable citizenship, Membership in the organization is limited to twenty-five members and consists of select Senior, Junior, and Sophomore boys who maintain a scholastic average of 80 and possess good character qualities. The Key Club took on numerous projects throughout the year. At the sugges- tion of Student Council the club purchased a menu board for the cafeteria fupper leftl, and presented to the school a glass enclosed bulletin board flower leftb. Another objective- to cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which makes possible the increase of righteousness, iustice, patriotism, and good will was evi- denced by the enthusiasm of Key Club members who literally drove voters to the polls to push over the hospital bond election. gb-. Its purpose is to encourage effort, to promote character, to stimulate achievement, to cultivate leadership qualities, to reward merit, and to encourage students to continue education after high school graduation. Membership is determined by the administration on the basis of CU good mentality and character, C27 creditable achievement, C31 commendable attitude. Our chapter has been successfully carrying out the service of orientation of new students llower rightl. This is very helpful to the student in a school as large and widespread as ours. Another project being promoted by the Beta Club is the selling of waterproof red and gold book covers. On May 29 of this year, the Beta Club became charter members of the National Honor Society at South Broward. This club is recognized all over the United States and will prove a real asset to our school. rf S-,ir Jim Moore, President Www MR JAMES SHOFFSTALL Sponsor on WX? my I ,nine its XX. f' x4 oe Goodwull Secretary 104 Reba Sferlmg Sweetheart Q. Diversified Cooperative Training, commonly known as DCT, has completed its second year at South Broward. This special course enables a student to complete his required academic subiects in the morning and to receive on-the-iob training in the afternoon. Two class periods are devoted to DCT. One is spent in generally related work, such as the studies of insurance, iob-getting techniques, employer-employee relations, and mental hygiene, the other consists of specifically related study, in which each student devotes his time to work pertaining directly to his own occupation. Two annual affairs attended by all DCT members are a district convention and an employer-employee banquet. The organization of a DCT club, which meets twice a month and holds several parties, provides a means of social activity. 4 ' C Secreya 'L-'Osh Pr , . Even though most of the boys were inexperienced, they fared very well against all competition and gave an gall-around good ac- count of themselves. t To open their campaign the Bulldogs iourneyed to Jacksonville to engage Andrew Jackson of that city. The trip proved successful as the Bulldogs, starting off with a bang and leading 20-6 at the half, coasted the rest of the game and when thejinal gun sotinded they had a 26-21 win. The Bulldogs then ran up a winning streak of three games as they rolled over Daytona Beach, Seabreezeg Pahokee, and Vero Beach in succession. Seabreeze proved a worthy opponent and the Bulldogs won a close 13-6 wind in a game marred with fumbles. Pahokee was the next victim as reserves played most of the contest with the final score ending 12-O. The Vero Beach game was a thriller all the way and only a margin of one point proved the winning 14-13 score. f ThetBulldogs traveled to Belle Glade to meet the Rams in their next outing. They lost a hard fought contest in which both teams matched runs for runs, and thrill for thrill. The Rams got two scores late in the game to take a 13-O win. Fort Pierce was the next on the schedule and during the contest the Eagles capitalized on some good breaks to come out in front of the Bulldogs 20-6. The Bulldog's Homecoming game was the big event of the year with Coral Gables. There were many pageants and ceremonies to honor football queen, Kay Mendoza, and the Bulldog gridmen made it an even more enjoyable night by trouncing a heavily favored Coral Gables squad 12-O. This win put the Bulldogs final season standing at six wins and four losses. Seniors virtually dominated the first team as there were eight of the first eleven. Outstanding iobs were done by backs Kicki Wise, Buddy Lewis, and Johnny McMann. McMann was the leading scorer and ground gainer and was honored with a four year scholarship at the University of Florida. Leading linemen were Harry Black, Eddie Houston, .loe Spina, Ernie Hill and captain Al Pomianowski. Spina was chosen for a spot on the All-East Coast All Star grid squad. Leroy Wright was the Bulldogs outstanding defensive performer and won the squad's Iron Man award. Al Pomianowski was a virtualrock on defense while Bob Sassano, Rodney McCombs and Chippy Marks are other seniors who will be missed very much.
