The Pioneer 1 9 6 6 South Berwick High School South Berwick, Maine GRAYSON A.HARTLEY Superintendent of Schools To the Graduating Class: Graduation is an event that seniors everywhere antic- ipate with a great deal of enthusiasm. A high school commencement seems to mean freedom, greater choice, new friends and places, and the thrill of choosing one's future career and embarking upon it. This year, 1966, is somewhat overshadowed by the worrisome events taking place in the world. However, in spite 01 the gloomy atmos- phere, one should not despair or lack courage to make plans for his future because the same challenges and op- portunities are waiting to be tried now just as they have been in the years past. America is still the land of great opportunity. Americans are still the most fortunate human beings born anywhere on this earth. We have our free- doms, great richness and abundance. As time passes, it becomes more important than ever for each American to take a responsible part in helping his country meet the challenges of the future. No longer can any American sit back and say, it's not my concern , as he pursues his private interest to the exclusion of everything else. If our democracy is to survive, every citizen must do his bit to insure the future that we want to come. My very best wishes to each of you for your future success. Grayson A. Hartley, Superintendent School Administrative District No. 35 Representatives: Mr. Stuart C. Chaplin, Mr. Henry R. Sawyer, Mr. J. Donald Staples, Mr. Robert L. Olmstead, Mr. Owen Stevens, Jr.; Absent-Mrs. Cecelia W. Morse. MATTHEW J. FLAHERTY - is principal at S.B.H.S. - attended U.N.H. Plymouth State College, Randolph Macon College - received B.S.; M. Ed. - formerly taught at Dover High and Alton High - coaches track and cross country June 1966 To the Members of the Class of 1966: When the outstanding Class of 1965 graduated last June, there was concern expressed by some that the Class of 1966 could not hope to reach the former's achievements — but you have; you have even surpassed them in some respects -- such as the percentage con- tinuing post-high school education. Now that you have proven you can match or surpass them in continuing your education, I challenge you to do the same in com- pleting the post-secondary training which you have started; there are times when discontinuance is ration- al, but more often it terminates after a brief attempt rather than a sustained effort to succeed — short range goals are not easy to quell as compared to rationalizing long range objectives. Yours is the last class to graduate from South Berwick High School — you have been a credit to our school. You can be proud of your contributions in the fields of public speaking, drama, Math Club, athletic teams, Latin and French Clubs, etc., and, all important academically, you led the way by having most on the Honor Roll. With only two Varsity players returning to the line-up and the team's average height 5'3 , the Pioneers began rather slowly. Gaining momentum, they bounced back meeting their opponents full force on the courts, bettering their scores when replaying each team. Their splendid team- work, determination, and school spirit, prevalent throughout the entire season, paid off in the exciting climax of the Pioneer-Indian game at Eliot - when our girls emerged as victors, scalping the Indians by one point!
