Through the efforts of this group, organized in September, 1948, forty- two maroon and gold band uniforms and over 81,000 worth of instruments were purchased. The club raised over 33.600 in two months' time, through the cooperation of merchants and townspeople, who gave generously to the band. Officers who led the club in its active first year were: Mrs. Arnold Leber, presidentg Mrs. Vail Steele, secretaryg and Mrs. L. W. Taylor, treasurer. During the half-time period of the South Bend-Valley game Ulive Crayne was crow ned queen as the band play- ed My Wild Irish Rose. The Queen and her attendants, Marjorie Grugin- ski, Beverly Weichman, Gloria Hudson, and Kay Leber made a very pretty picture as they marched to the throne. Kirk Church represented the football team and placed the golden crown upon the head of the queen. The South Bend and Valley High School bands performed during the half-time period immediately following the homecoming ceremonies.
