Catllolic Icleals Ever irindful of Christ's appeal, Sanctify them in truth, ' and inspired by their motto, Charity and '1'ruth the faculty of South Bend Catholic High has left nothing undone that could foster the education of youth in compliance with the directives of Pope Pious XI, in His Encyclical Letter on Christian Edu- cation o- Youth. lDivini Illius Magistril The proper and immediate end of Christian education is to co-operate with divine grace in forming the true and the perfect Christian . . . For precisely this reason, Christian education takes in the whole aggregate of human life, physical and spiritual, intellectual and moral, individual, domestic, and social, not with a view of reducing it in any way, but in order to ele- vate, regulate and perfect it, in accordance with the example and teaching of Christ! In our school curricula we have the provisions or exactly these objectives. The intellectual, so- ciil and physical growth of the students is con- siderecl and provided for in correlation with the moral and religious training - all a part of the school program. Religious instructions find ex- pression in practical living, in the liturgical and the devotional practices throughout the school year. Liturgical seasons are given due attention and liv- ing in the spirit of the liturgy is greatly encour- aged. Some religious practices and devotions held in our school throughout the school year are: The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered in the provisional chapel of the school auditorium--here the students and the faculty pray united as a large Christian family . . . First Friday Devotions - Holy Com- munion and Mass .... Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary ..... October Devotions-Rosary and Bene- diction every day .... Spiritual Check-Up: Three Day Retreat lor all the students .... Special Day of Recollection for the Seniors .... Ring Day Cere- mony ..... May Devotions - the Procession and the May Crowning ..... Senior Graduation Day- a beautiful and impressive Church ceremony. Catholic's sports history is filled with thrill- ing nioments of tense and brilliant play. Our team, with splendid coaching and student support, has given the school recognition. The Lions were sportsmen in the truest sense both in victory and in defeat. No game is complete Without the loyal and wholeheartecl support of our naturally gifted Var- sity and B Team Cheerleaders . . . the grand school spirit and the flow of energy that went out with their yells and cheers . . . just did wonders . . . cheering the Lions to Victory! Some high-lights recorded in S.B.C.H. Athletic Ilistory: 1937 - Lions grasped the City Championship of the City of South Bend having defeated Riley High School by a score of 14-6. 1940 - Lions beat Andy Pilney's powerful Little Giants of Weber High of Chicago, 26-6. Lions beat St. Mary's Desplaines, Chicago. 25-7 . Lions beat Assumption High, Canada, 13-0. Lions beat St. Elizabeth High, Chicago, 28-7. 1943 - Capt. Richard Podell wins All City honors. 1947 - Fighting Lions captured the City Catholic Chiairpionship by tfillying to a 26-0 Victory! Boy! What a game! Capt. Stanley Przestwor-Center, First Team Tribune All Twin City Team. The first player in the history of S. B. parochial school to attain this honor. 1948 - The Marozsan Trophy was presented to the S.B.C.H. Football Stars. 1951 - Don Kovach awarded All Twin City honors as outstanding fullback in 1950.
