Sending a blessing to the faculty and students of South Bend Catholic on the occ-asion of its Silver Jubilee, I am, Yours sincerely in Christ, + J. F. NOLL Bishop of Fort Wayne Page Nine The Reverend tanis aus Gruza, C. Q Page Ten FOUNDER A hlessage From the Founder On the occasion of this grand celebration of the Silver Jubilee of the South Bend Catholic High School, I extend my deepest esteem and re- spect to the past and present staffs of teachers, both Sisters and Priests, for their heroic sacrificeg my congratulations to all the Polish parishes and their spiritual Leaders for the co-operation they have shown in maintaining the Institution: and G0d's choicest blessings to all the or- ganizations, societies and individual citizens, who in any way, whether morally or materially, have contributed to its success. May God bless the South Bend Catholic High School and its ardent and faithful sup- porters. April 26, 1953 Chicago, Illinois. REVEREND S. A. GRUZA, C.S.C THE STORY SOUTH BEND CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL Sanctify them in truth fJohn XVII, 173 To the numerous souls who had followed the Divine Master throughout the ages, this prayerful desire of the Saviour had become His urgent appeal for apostolic laborers, who would work for the sanc- tification of others through prayer, sacrifice and teaching. Our religious leiders and teachers ans- wered this call by dedicating themselves to the sub- lime mission of g-aining souls for Christ, sanctify- ing them through Catholic Education. VVhile we observe the twenty-fifth anniversary of this school's existence, it seems in order to mention: home and in the grammar school. It was here that the religious and the educational aspects were cor- related with the training and developing of cultural abilities and ideals so close to the heart of every Pole. It was obvious that youth from these schools could derive much benefit and inspiration, if given the opportunity to draw further from sources im- bued with this spirit. The possibilities for such opportunities were to be realized in September, 1928, when the Reverend Stanislaus A. Gruzn, C.S.C., decided that the time has come .... a Catholic High School was to be Foreground-St. Hedwig High, the original S. B. C. H. Background-St. Hedwig Elementary School which housed some of the classes due to lack of space in the high school. and gratefully acknowledge all that the Good Lord has accomplished through His ministers and serv- ants, and likewise to include fa brief historical sketch of this school-the Alma Mater, through whose unassuming portals hundreds of young men and women have passed into all walks of life. For many years, those who understood youth and the responsibilities of life, observed with regret that so many of our boys and girls were deprived of a Catholic High School education which would provide for a natural continuation of what was begun at started right there in his parish .... that same year .... With the devoted assistance of Sister M. Seve- rina, C.S.C., the principal, plans were discussed and final preparations made. The approval and the benediction of His Excellency, the Most Reverend John F. Noll, D.D., was received. Help and willing hands were summoned. And so, the pastor began to gradually realize a great noble ideal, an ideal, which seemed by far greater than the .means he had on hand to attain it. There was no building to call Page Eleven the high school building and funds, as usual, were low. However, a start was made. Some class- rooms in the grade school were set 'aside for the High School use and were equipped to meet the de- mands of the program. The school was named Saint Hedwig High School under the patronage of Our Lady of Victory. The first High School faculty consisted of: The Reverend Casimir J. Witucki, C.S.C., Sister M. Severina, C.S.C., Sister M. Christel- la, C.S.C., Sister M. Francella, C.S.C., and later Dr. B. J. Bolka, instructor in Health, and Mr. Albin Hosinski, instructor in the Commercial Department. The official opening took place on September 4, 1928. During the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass cele- brated by the Reverend Gruza. the faculty and the students prayed for God's blessings upon the whole enterprise. The Very Rev. Msgr. John Osadnik ad- dressed the student body during the school assembly, other speakers on this occasion were: The Reverend Witucki, assistant pastor, Mr. Clement S. Smogor and Mr. G. W. J. Kalczynski. The registration was held at the rectory. Tui- tion was one dollar per month. Thirty three fresh- men were enrolled. Classes were organized on the opening day and regular schedules for both the classical, college preparatory, and the commercial courses were arranged. That same year saw the organization of a Glee Club under the direction of Mr. C. F. Luzny. Volley Ball teams were organized for the girls and Football teams for the boys-Fa- ther Witucki was Athletic Director and conducted the Religion and the Latin classes. Mr. M. E. Fischer, was coach and instructor. The school grew - more space was needed! Adjacent to the elementary school stands a frame building, a relic dear to the people of St. Hedwig. Originally it served our pioneers -as a church and later, a school building. It has been called the cradle of learning since for many years almost everyone's education started there .... Plans were were made to remodel this building -and convert it into a temporary high school building. The South Bend Society, of the Polish National Alliance, do- nated a special fund for this purpose, other Polish organizations and local church societies raised funds for the equipment of the Science and the Commer- cial Department. The St. Hedwig Alumni Associa- tion and individual parishioners had given much time, labor and funds to advance the good work. This general enthusiasm and good will produced amazing results. The remodeled building gave the high school a typing room, a music room, a spacious study hall and an enlarged library. Page Twelve Soon the school won the 'approval of School City Administration and was ready to open a Sophomore class the following year, and later the Junior and the Senior classes. In the course of the year, the school was honored by distinguished guests and speakers from Notre Dame and elsewhere: The Very Rev. J. W. Dona- hue, C.S.C., the Very Rev. James E. Burns, C.S.C., and the Reverends Dr. S. F. Lisewski, C.S.C., Ray- mond Murch, C.S.C., Dr. A. Hope, C.S.C., Eugene Burke, C.S.C,, Cornelius Laskowski, C.S.C., J. Dil- lon, Diocesan Supervisor of schools, and others. The second year saw an additional enrollment of students, and the third a doubled enrollment SISTER M. SEVERINA, C.S.C. First Principal , It was during this year that athletics were fully or- ganized under the direction of Father Witucki and Mr. Sigmund Sadlowski as coach. Games were scheduled with other high schools of the city and out of town games were played. The entire student body participated in the games and -accompanied the Lions to cheer them to victory. By the fourth year we had an enrollment of one hundred and seventy six students. The school ac- creditation was obtained in this year. Dr. F. E. Al- len, Superintendent of the South Bend Public Schools, and 'Mr. G. Murray, representative of the State Department of Public Instruction, of Indiana- polis, visited the school and found it well equipped and in good order, therefore worthy of accredit- ment . This important step forward strengthened the school's scholastic standing. Came June, 1932 .... preparations were being .made for the first graduation at St. Hedwig High! We read in the Sunday Visitor of that great occa- sion: The city of South Bend was touched to the heart, seeing its dreams realized, when 'after four years of hard labor St. Hedwig's High School grad- uated its first seniors .... The ceremonies of gra- duation began Sunday morning, June 5, at 7:30 o'clock, when nineteen students wearing caps and govims marched up the aisle to the solemn tune of a march played by Professor Luzny. The Solemn good wholesome life, On the other hand, Prof. Manion directed his remarks chiefly to the parents, who by their sacrifices made this commencement possible. He complimented the school on its suc- cess in graduating the first senior class, and ad- vised the students, as well as the Polish people, in general, to cling to their customs and culture for from an atmosphere like this sprang the independ- ence of the colonies and the Constitution of the Uni- ted States,' he said. Another distinguished guest speaker was the Hon. Thaddeus Bujnowski, acting Consul of the Re- Lmpu -wrist., . .ws - . - THE GRADUATES OF 1932 - High 'Mass was celebrated, alter which the Bacca- laureate sermon was preached by Rev. Anthony Zu- bowicz, C.S.C., who spoke on Higher Education and cautioned the graduates to be true to the ideals in- stilled in them during the four years at their Alma Mater. Class night was observed at 8:15 on Monday night in the parish auditorium, Prominent speakers were: The Rev. Dr. S. F. Lisewski, C.S.C., and Professor Clarence E. Manion of Notre Dame. The former, speaking to the graduates, stressed the im- portance of education and character in leading a public of Poland, and Prof. Stanislaus Galazka, Educational Instructor of the Polish Ministry of Education in Warsaw, Poland .... In addressing the graduates they praised the national spirit, the loyalty to both Poland -and America, which they said prevails in the small wooden building.-St. Hedwig High School. The teachers who assisted so successfully in building up the first Catholic High School were: Sisters Francella, Christella, Agnetta, Danielita, Angelus, Anthony M-ary, 'Mirriarn Rita, Francis Gabriel, Joan Elizabeth and the Reverend Casimir J. Witucki, C.S.C. Page Thirteen To Sister M. Severina, C.S.C., during these four struggling years as principal and teacher, is due much of the success. It is her untiring energy, keeness of foresight and great zeal, with which she undertook her duties in the High School, that steer- ed the sm .ll institution through the first four years of its existence. In September, 1932, Mr. Cesare Janisheske be- came coach of the Football team, through his ef- In-F mimi .3'... Reverend Reverend F. X. Luzny, C.S.C. B. J. Szturzko, C.S.C. forts the team was led to success and prominence resulting in the winning of the city championship that year. He also taught classes, others who helped teaching during these first years were: Mrs. John Paczesny, in charge of the Domestic Sci- ence Departmentg Mr. Anthony Kuharich, in- structor in English, Draniatics and Orchestra, anal later Mr. Wm Paege, also director of orchestra. Mrs. Helen Slominski, Mr. Louis WVoodka and Miss Marie Buczkowski had also given much of their time and talent directing and teaching the students Music and Dramatics. The parishioners of St. Hed- wig 'and their friends always welcomed vocal and musical programs for in these talent and much abili- ty were displayed. Oratorical contests we1'e arranged at certain in- tervals by the student organizations: Platonian Club, Sh. kespearcan Club, Conrad Club, Reymont Club, Mickiewicz Club-the students were thus given an opportunity for public speaking -and cultural advancement. In 1934, Father Gruza was transfered. In part- ing, he expressed his deep appreciation to all who helped to make the High School a reality. He en- treated that they keep up this great work for God's greater honor and glory. Father Gruza was suc- ceeded by the Rev. Francis X. Luzny, C.S.C., who Paage Fourteen Llc: his predecessor loved youth and gave himself unsparingly to the advancement of their education. At this time, Father Witucki was given a new assignment. His zealous work in organizing -and e- quipping the school, and later in conducting classes and directing athletics entitle him to .much credit for the success of the school. Father Witucki was succeeded by the Rev. S. Jankowski, C.S.C., who took over his duties with the usual earnestness of his apostolic soul. The general financial depression of the next few years was felt keenly by most institutions. It was felt more so, by our school whose material upkeep has always been a special concern of all its direc- tors. With the growth of enrollment, there was also the growth of activities and this meant in- creased expenditures. It was obvious that the fi- nancial maintenance of the school could no longer de- pend upon the donations and resources of one parish only. Yet, be wh-at may, there was the popular de- mand that St. Hedwig High continue its work for the good of our youth. The matter was referred to the Polish American Civic Committee composed of fifty-eight Polish organizations of South Bend and Mishawaka. Here it was decided that the four lo- cal parishes share in this responsibility of financial- ly maintaining the school. It was at this time that the South Bend Catholic High School Board of Trustees was formed with the following members Reverend Reverend C. J. Witucki, C.S.C. S. A. Jankowski, C.S.C. as directors: Rev. F. X. Luzny, C.S.C., Pastor of St. Hedwig, School Director, Rt. Rev. Msgr. John Osadnik, Pastor of St. Adalbert Parishg Rev. S. J. Gorka, C.S.C., Pastor of St. Casimir Parish, Rev. Stanislaus Kuszynski, C.S.C., Pastor of Stanis- laus Parish, Mr. J. S. Buczkowski, Presidentg Mr. Chester Lisck, Vice-President: Miss Cornelia H. Krsnierek, Secretary, Mr. B. P. Minczewski, Trea- surerg Mr. Edward Kowalski, Mr. Peter A. Beczkie- wiez, Mrs. Cecilia Szulczyk, Mr. Bert Pejza, Mrs. Helen Slominski, M:'. Ladislaus Jaroszewski, Mrs. Helen Zwierzynski, Mr. Leo J. Chlebowski, and Mr. XVojciech Wiatrowski. The Board arranged for drives, campaigns, and various activities throughout the city. The united efforts and mutual determina- tion not only made the existence of the school pos- sible, but also helped its general progress. The Summer of 1937 brought a change of the teaching staff. The Sisters of the Congregation of Holy Cross were succeeded by the Sisters of the Congregation of the Resurrection who assumed all some good news was relayed .... there was a pos- sibility of acquiring the Laurel or Pulaski School. The acting Committee headed by the Rev. S. Jan- kowski had taken things in hand and shortly after, the prospect of leasing the building became a reality on August 15, the least of Our Lady. The South Bend Tribune of August 16, 1938, had the following mention regarding this transaction: The Pulaski lL aurelb Public School was leased by the School Board for a fifty year period as new qiarters for St. Hedwig High School. The official ,ormality of presenting the building to the Board of Directors was connected with the de- dication ceremonies. A senior student, Miss Loretta Ruszkowski, records these events in the Victorian of 1939, as follows: The Dedication of the New High School .... An enthusiastic and triumphant group The Laurel School which was converted to South Bend Catholic High duties at St. I-IedWig's. The first High School staff of this congregation consisted of: Sister Pauline Agnes, C.R., Superior and Principal, Sister Stanis- laus, Sister Theresa, Sister M. Catherine and Sister Dorothea. Classes were resumed in September. The scho- lastic and the athletic programs remained much. the same as in the preceeding years. Due to the increased enrollment, a new problem arose . . . a need for more classrooms and better ac- commodations. A general interest was awakened and inquiries were made. Within a few weeks, of two thousand individuals assembled before the former Pulaski Girls' Prevocational School on Sun- day, September 11, 1938, to witness the official pre- sentation of the school to the Polish American Cen- tr..l Civic Committee and take part in the dedication preceeded by a street parade which marked the opening of the day's ceremonies .,.. It was a day of which every student dreamed and talked, but far was it from the students' expectations that the dream would be so soon materialized. Thus, it was joyous faces that Mr. Allen, Superintendent of South Bend Public Schools saw when he placed with sin- cerest wishes the building in custody of the Centra- la, and expresed his belief that soon the Poles would purchase this structure, now leased for fifty years . . . . Osadnik and the Rev. S. Kuszynski, also :Ex- M-ayor, George W. Freyermuth, who aided in get- ting this building for our youth, Dr. B. J. Bolka, who at that time was Chairman of the School Board and Mr. J. S. Buczkowski, President of Centrala, who said that Religion should be a part of -a child's education. The program began with patriotic zeal shown by the raising of the American flag, it ended with a sincere prayer by Msgr. Osadnikf' And so, the St. Hedwig High School was moved to its new quarters . . . the name was changed to South Bend Catholic High School, under the patron- age of Our Lady of Victory. Moving from one school to the other was a thrilling and exciting ex- perience, but the most touching scene was the car- rying of the beloved statue of Our Lady of Victory, by the students from the old school to the new with songs and prayers of devotion and loyalty to their Queen and Mother. Sister Pauline Agnes, the principal, and the faculty spared no efforts, time and labor to organize the classrooms and arrange the school program- classes were resumed on schedule. To aid the High School in the financial needs the Ladies Aid Society of the S.B.C.H., known now as the Parent-Teachers Association, was organized under the direction of the principal, Sister Pauline Agnes. Mrs. Frances Strauss was elected first President, Mrs. H. Zwierzynski, Vice-President. Mrs. Catherine Wesolowski, Recording Secretary, Mrs. Louise Wozniak, Financial Secret-ary, Miss Stella Ciesielski, Treasurer, and Mrs. Eva Gorka, Publici- ty Chairman. The members of this association have always given most generously of their time -and labor-social activities were planned and funds were raised. It is with deep gratitude that we rc- call the self-sacrificing work and effort that was required to equip the Library with new steel shelv- ing, additional books and supplies: the Cafeteria with t-ables and equipment, the Science Department with tables and instrumentsg the Commercial De- partment with more typewriters and supplies. The noble work begun by the pioneer members is still carried on with great devotion toward the school. May the Good Lord reward them! Page Sixteen On November 14, 1939, the faculty and students were highly honored by a visit of the Most Reverend Bishop John F. Noll. The honor and privilege was theirs again when in June His Excellency had taken part in the Senior Graduation Ceremony and dis- tributed diplomas to the Class of 1939. The Rever- end John Cavanaugh, C.S.C., delivered the Com- mencement Address. The ceremony took place in the St. Hedwig Parish Auditorium. This was the Eighth Annual Comniencementithe most impres- sive and memorable in the history of the school. The Reverend Mother Teresa Kalkstein, C.R., Superior General of the Sisters of the Resurrection, who had been here from Rome, was our distinguish- ed guest visitor in the High School in January, 1940. The students were honored and privileged to hear her message in the School Auditorium. December 7, 1941-Pearl Harbor Attack ..... War! Our graduates and students responded to their country's call, some enlisted, others were Very Reverend Monsignor IGNATIUS J. GAPCZYNSKI drafted into service. South Bend Catholic High was proud to display her Service Flag with one hundred and twenty nine blue stars, new stars being added as the months passed on. Those who remained at home and school also served by praying and par- ticipating in charitable and social affairs, bringing aid to our boys and to the victims of war. Let us keep their names in our prayerful memories . . . . The first number of the Hi-Lite our school paper, appeared in October. 1944. It is published monthly. The paper had .met with great success winning first honor rating of the Catholic Press Association. The editori-al policies of the initial issues are kept up: the paper retains its Catholic friendly spirit. In March, 1946, S. B. C. H. was privileged to hear the Rev. Patrick Peyton, C,S.C., introducing his Crusade of the Rosary. The students responded wholeheartedly and promised their earnest support in spreading this beautiful devotion. The Family Ros-ary has become a part of our school-family spi- rit. The Rosary is recited every day during the noon intermission. The Reverend Boleslaus J. Sztuczko, C.S.C., be- came pastor of St. Hedwig, and director of South Bend Catholic High in 1946. Father Sztuczko has carried the financial burdens of the High School for all these years, and was 'always sincerely interested in the progress of the school. June, 1948-saw the largest graduating class in the history of the school-eighty three seniors. The students joined St. Adalbert's Parish in re- joicing and congratulating their pastor, the Very Reverend Msgr. I. J. Gapczynski, who had been elevated to the rank of Papal Chamberlain. Msgr. I. Gapczynski has been a member of the Board of Directors of S.B.C.H. for years, his interest in youth and the problems of their education keeps him close to our school. S. B. C. H. Further Progress Since the next few years had very much in com- mon, the leading activities of these recent times will be summarized under the given headings in the following pages Music - As years went on, S.B.C.H extended its educational program by including Music, Art and Dramatics into its curriculum. The Glee Clubs under the direction of Sister Mary Grace, CR., and Sister Marie Lillian, C.R., and the Orchestra direct- ed by Mr. S. Gaska had given the individual student a valuable training and at the same time had given the school a very desirable and popular service, since they were frequently called upon to furnish music for the various entertainments during the year. Art - The financial help of the Chopin's Arts Club organized in South Bend by Mrs. Helen Slo- minski, made it possible for the school to open an Art Department. The occasional art displays re- veal unusual talents and keen interest in this field. Dramatics -- Dramatic performances always play an important part in the school program. Year in and year out, the entire school looks forward to the senior plays . . . and, for added interest and emulation .... the Senior Play in a double cast! It seems that the school year would be incomplete without the seniors presenting their skill and tal- ents along the theatrical lines, be it 'a serious dra- ma or an entertaining and lively comedy, the pre- sentations are fully appreciated and enjoyed by all. Much talent for the senior plays is discovered in the usual class assemblies held during the previous years. Oratorical Contests - To provide opportunities for public speaking, oratorical contests continued with this added new aspect that the students coni- pete with other High Schools in the city. Those who won special recognition in Speech Contests sponsored by the American Legion Oratorical Con- tests were: George Aranowski, Robert Kaminski, Emilie Adamski, Lorraine Cudowski, J. Bukowski, Vincent Weddle, Mary Lou Cudowski, James Man- kowski. Some of the above mentioned had been frequently heard over the W.S.B.T. on the Town Meeting Panel. Winners in the Junior T. B. Catllolic Icleals Ever irindful of Christ's appeal, Sanctify them in truth, ' and inspired by their motto, Charity and '1'ruth the faculty of South Bend Catholic High has left nothing undone that could foster the education of youth in compliance with the directives of Pope Pious XI, in His Encyclical Letter on Christian Edu- cation o- Youth. lDivini Illius Magistril The proper and immediate end of Christian education is to co-operate with divine grace in forming the true and the perfect Christian . . . For precisely this reason, Christian education takes in the whole aggregate of human life, physical and spiritual, intellectual and moral, individual, domestic, and social, not with a view of reducing it in any way, but in order to ele- vate, regulate and perfect it, in accordance with the example and teaching of Christ! In our school curricula we have the provisions or exactly these objectives. The intellectual, so- ciil and physical growth of the students is con- siderecl and provided for in correlation with the moral and religious training - all a part of the school program. Religious instructions find ex- pression in practical living, in the liturgical and the devotional practices throughout the school year. Liturgical seasons are given due attention and liv- ing in the spirit of the liturgy is greatly encour- aged. Some religious practices and devotions held in our school throughout the school year are: The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass offered in the provisional chapel of the school auditorium--here the students and the faculty pray united as a large Christian family . . . First Friday Devotions - Holy Com- munion and Mass .... Consecration to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and to the Immaculate Heart of Mary ..... October Devotions-Rosary and Bene- diction every day .... Spiritual Check-Up: Three Day Retreat lor all the students .... Special Day of Recollection for the Seniors .... Ring Day Cere- mony ..... May Devotions - the Procession and the May Crowning ..... Senior Graduation Day- a beautiful and impressive Church ceremony. To have an opportunity of attending a Catholic High School is indeed a blessing, since it is here that education consists essentially in preparing man for what he must be and for what he must do here below, in order to attain the sublime end for which he was created. .... lChristian Educ. of Youthj The accomplishments and the successes of South Bend Catholic High had been made possible by the contributed devoted services of its: Directors: The Reverend Stanislaus Gruza, C.S.C. Certainly, much more could and should h-ave been written about each phase and activity, about groups and individuals who played very important parts in the school's existence and contributed to the general success, but, neither time nor space was alloted to make this possible, So, we close with an earnest prayer that God in His way reward all who had supported this great work morally or material- ly .... May He grant abundant fruition to all these labors and efforts ..... M-ay the good here untold live in the hearts of all ..... But eager or not, a long ac- quaintance Was begun on both accounts. The ice of social life at S. B. C. was broken on September 25, when the seniors sponsored the Get Acquainted Dance honoring all newcomers. The dance, though advertised as being held from 7:30 to 10:30. actually ran from 10:10 to 10:30 for that's when the fel- las got warmed up. I'm afraid it's no longer a man's world, for on Class Elec- tion Day, Natalee Goepfrich was elected president of the sophomores in Room 204. You must have had some party platform, Natalee! Dive for he oyster, dig for the clam, rang through our auditorium as we square danc- ed ourselves to exhaustion. fKasco really showed us how to swing our partners. J St. Mary's College played hast tc the Catholic Press As- sociation. The S.B.C. crew of amateur journalists is still wondering if it was dessert or salad that was served them. Coveted Ring Day finally arrived. By this time the Hi-Lite staff was already preparing the dummy for the Septem- l'er-October issue, while the Victorian staff began design- ing and creating this year's annual. Meanwhile, the boys began challenging the girls' pony tails. They started wear- ing D.A.'s. Again the girls weren't going to be outdone. They scon became Bottle Blonds. Rev. My Lord and My God-bless me, always! This is the pray- er of every heart as Father Casey raises the monstrance in Benediction during May devo- tions. Each day throughout the school year we dedicated fifteen minutes of our lunch hour to the recitation of the rosary. Evening in Paradise, the senior prom, was without a doubt the crowning social event of the year. Its arrival was proceeded by weeks of excited mumbo-jumbo about es- corts, gowns, tux-es , flowers, and who's driving. The anxiety and preparations were climaxed on May 8, at the Indiana Club, as we soon fell under the spell of Tony Rulli's music. Each month the students were treated to a round-up of news and events. The Hi-Lite staff with Sister Theophane, did a bang-up job this year. Just like the Victorian, the Hi-Lite required a great deal of work, as we are sure Sister Theopliane can tell you. The staff learned a lot about syllabication and punctuation. They cav- ered our activities well and were always ready and waiting for new ideas or sug- gestions. Consequently, it was no sur- prise that it was awarded a Certificate of Honor bv the National Tuberculosis Lea- gue and the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
