Boleslaus J. Sztuczko, C.S.C., Director of South Bend Catholic High School, is an ardent advocate of School Administration and activities. His first concern is youth, its advancement and welfare. It is through his fine efforts and hard work, that South Bend Catho- lic has become the leading Catholic School in South Bend. Acknowledging these facts we express our deepest ap- preciation for his interest in the upkeep of our school. Education and Religion God gave man an intellect and a will, the intellect, headlight, the willg the locomotive, The intellect is to brighten his path, the will is to urge him forever onward over the stars to life everlasting. In God's plan understand- ing and will were meant to be trained and educated together. They were to grow up side by side. If you develop the one at the ex- pense of the other, equilibruim is destroyed. The balance Wheel by which God meant to regulate man's doings, is out of gear, This balance wheel is religion. Religion -- which teaches man in his highest flights that there is something higher. Religion which teaches him in his degradation that he is pur- suing ,the Wrong course. Religion which nurses him back to a new childhood of hope when he is down-hearted and discouraged. An education that neglects religion falls short of the plan of God. That is why He infused into the mind of Adam a knowledge of what he was to do. That is why He inspired the prophets to trumpet out into the ears of the people that, The fear of the Lord is the begin- ning of wisdom. That is Why He sent His beloved Son, Our Lord and Saviour, to en- lighten our intellect and strenghten our will forever, that is why He established through Christ the universal Church, that she might forever cry out to the nations the same old truths of creation's dawn, namely, that know- ledge without religion is emptiness, and that education Without Jesus Christ is like the darkness of the night in which are seen no stars. The first obstacle to over- come was to remember what subject came when and where. The changing of classes was a novelty to us, and at first it seemed as if it were an odd building. with the wrong rooms, in the wrong place, at the wrong time. Within a short time we became acquainted. Upon as- sembling and uniting of the classes, we discov- ered that we held the distinction as the largest class to enroll in the history of the school. Time progressed, again we were outstanding, The last class to be initiated. Ah yes! Initiation Day newly acquainted schoolmates were at- tired in preposterous and outlandish costumes causing pedestrians to stop and stare in amaze- ment, as we dropped to our knees and humbly recited to our overlording senior the prescribed answer to the question, What time is it? Thus being officially accepted as a student, we entered into social life. Initiation Dance, football games, basketball games, Thanksgiv- ing Dance, South American Dance, and the honor of being the first freshman class to spon- sor a dance, lthe night of the Mid-Term Form- all. Having had this responsibility we glided into Spring through the Sweetheart Sway, Holiday for Spring, followed by the last re- port card. The Senior annual play Here Comes Charlie, the year book, the Crowning, and the singing for the graduation exercises. The first day of our Sophomore year found the weather sultry and humid, but none-the- less we were happy to be reunited and continue working for honors and privileges which were to be ours. The outstanding ones were attending the Mid-Year VVinter Wonderland, and the Spring Senior Promenade formal dances. Our work as a class progressed and our Carnival of Hearts was a huge success. This year might be regarded as average with its cycle of foot- ball and basketball games lost and won, dances, Hi-Lite skating party, studies, grades, boy and girl intramurals, the annual senior play, A Howling Success, climaxed by an event that is recorded for all time in our snapshots, memo- ries, and hearts, our trip to Pogagon State Park at Angola, Indiana. We entered our Junior year proud and con- fident, aware of the fact that we were upper classmen. Vince Koziatek, Jeanny Klosinski, and Irene De Fauw led the class in capacity of presidency and we continued to be regarded as a co-operative group. The first disappointment came when C.C. defeated us in football 7-63 the second, the decrease in school dances. The highlights of the year were: the Snow Flake Fantasyf' and Senior Ball' at the Palais Roy- ale, Junior Mixer Dance at St. Joe Hall, Sunshine Twins, Junior-Senior party with its movies, speeches and refreshments, and so on to the beautiful day that our girls led the grad- uating seniors down the aisle and school ad- journed for the summer vacation. At last the long awaited year arrived and now that it had, everyone seemed rather dub- ious as to whether we actually wanted to be seniors. It meant additional honors but also to compensate for it additional worries, respon- sibilities, and the realization that We must soon go forth from the protecting haven of our Alma Mater and battle the threatening world. Brave- ly we started our officers election and vague plans of what the year was to bring. The sen- ior boys were now the indispensable core of our football team showing amazing fight and ter- rific smootlmess out-playing six of seven teams they contested with, but the scores were not de- stined for us. We did however, beat our cross- town rivals Central Catholic by a score of 26-G. That game, the preceding bonfire-pep rally shali long live in our memories as the last we wit- nessed as students of South Bend Catholic. The dances became more frequent this year, the Journalist Jump starting the affairs and then the Turkey Trot, the Harvest Hop and January Frost, etc. The Junior- Senior mid-year formal and the Senior May Ball' were the attractions of the dancing program. Other long remaining memories were the Foot- ball Banquet, Education Week program and An- nual Day. Our much cherished class rings, our last impressive retreat, the May Crowning, the Junior-Senior party, Class Day and the final reward of our diplomas. Yes, this is our history! In conclusion we say, As freshmen we were glad we came, as seniors we hate to go, but with Mary we will proceed into the future. Class Prophecy Twas five and ten years past graduation, When two class presidents met at Penn's station. Charlie Carroll, -a fine coach at Marquette, And Bob Duhala, a photographer for the Gazette. Invocation O Mary, Seat of Wisdom. we humbly offer unto Thee everyday of our school life, as an act of love: child-like and unselfish. Aid us in Thy motherly way, to profit by these years both intellectually and spiritually. Heavenly Mother help us we beseech Thee and guide us in the future, as you have in the past, so that we may spend ALL OF' OUR DAYS WITH MARY. Memorare Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that never was it known -that any one who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, and sought thine intercession, was left unaided. Inspired with this con- fidence, I fly unto Thee, O Virgin of virgins, my 'Mother. To thee I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful, O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but hear and answer my prayer. Amen. Almost Eighteen as the title suggests concerns adolescents, but i SSO fresh and sweet a story that its production was a grand success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Heading the cast of twelve was Jeanny Klosinski as Ann Sherman, Ed- die's young love. Charles Carroll held the lead playing Eddie Barry, the boy who wanted to become another Bing Crosby. Uncle George, who had a new philosophy for working as little as possible was portrayed by Leo Wieczorek, and Rita Janiszczak, Eddie's mother furnished some of the rol- licking laughter. Other members of the cast included Betty Jane Lorence who played the part of Eddie's twenty-one year old sister. Rita Jane Futa added spice as Mabel Warren a charming and perfectly groomed woman of forty, giving one the feeling that some male missed a good wife. William Barry, the father, who knew that life was serious' business and its tran- sactions had to be handled squarely but gruffly was played by Dick Balka, Sally Davidson was depicted by Rita Starczewski, Chet Salwowski played Tommy Granville, Mrs. Granville was Rose Mary Rachuba and Charles Holmes was Mr. Merritt. Joan Rakowski was Miss Dalrymple conveying the air of spinsterhood. Almost Eighteen was enthusiastically received and the audience re- action was very gratifying. One of the many highlights of this produc- tion was its picture of youth and its natural humor. rx i ,,, x M ' I' X Cheerleaders Left to Right: Center Picture Mary Jo Wagner, Mary Cather- ine Bartkowiak, Jeanny Klosin- ski, Rita Starczewski, Dolores Peczkowski, Mary Ann Slusarek, Velma Bokon, Mary Lou Cudow- ski. ,.-4 I E' N .KA Girl's Basketball Fresh. Queen Velma Bokon and King Charles 4BuddyJ Holmes. Below Our King lost in a harem of Senior lovelies. 5, l Forewa rd As we pass through the portals of time, leaving our school life and entering into life's school, we pause for a moment and reflect on the realization that we trod this path but once, It strikes us in various moods and results in innumerable emotions of regret and happiness. These in turn result in either the fear and doubt of life's battle or the determination -to go forth gallantly to fulfill the place and purpose that God in His Almighty goodness designated for us in this life. It is as a remembrance of friendships formed, training received, knowledge acquired, struggles, successes, prayers, dances, memories that we the Class of '48 present this Yearbook and choose to put it under the auspices of Our Blessed Mother to be ever symbolic of the importance our Queen played in the performance of our school lives. It is also our hope that as we bid fond adieu to our Alma Mater: Our Virgin Queen will continue Her incessant Watch and protection over us, Her children, so that we may live in accordance with God's Holy Will and adopt the mottoes Semper Fide1is and Semper Par- atus, as We commence our journey over the long road of life. J. conducted a most satisfactory retreat with the students of South Bend Catholic High, December 1, 2, 3. Father Carrabine commenced the retreat by giving' its full significance and the manner in which it should be made, generously, prayerfully and silently. He ardently urged the students to keep up the practice of attending daily Mass and receiving Holy Communion. He explained the necessity of living a clean, wholesome, Catholic life. Most emphatically he stressed the fact that too many people are phonies and lack the intestinal fortitude to face the pattern of reality. The retreat was concluded by the renouncing of Satan, the repetition of the baptismal vows and the Papal blessing. Reverend Martin J. Carrabine, S. J., mod- erator of Cisca in Chi- cago, was the retreat master who ably con- ducted our three day retreat in December. The students of South Bend Catholic High, greatly appreciate the well formulated re- treat. We the seniors shall always cherish memories of this our last Tridium, and be ever indebted to Father Carrabine.
