Freshmen Experiences We entered South Bend Catholic Une sunny September morn, We soon IOUIILI out to our dismay We were the Seniors' scorn. Uur next trial was well-planned And what people d1dn't say! For they had seen us all disguised, Un our Initiation Day. There were boys that looked like girls And girls that looked like men, And to this day we shudder yet when we think of what we'd been. Our wounds were soothed however , By the dances that followed soon, And we knew that all was forgiven As we danced to a favorite time XVO next elected a president :No primaries were needed for thisb, But we wonder how many of us Remember just who he is. We finally received our report cards The first of our high school days, And more than one of us, we're afraid, Were told to mend his ways. XVhen football season rolled around Things happened thick and fast, And when our team had battled hard XVc cheered them to the last. Then there came the well-planned plays There were dramas and comedies witty, And all that saw them do agree They thought them very pretty. Many things could we relate Of things we planned to do, But until we're Sophomores new and fresh We'll say so long to you. Richard and Robert were born comedians For they're still at itg the stage is their medium Politicians two of us have become Successful and honest as the day is long. Guess who 7-Ernest P. and Chester B. Their faces on billboards all over we see. Ah! but what is this that We have here? A jovial physician, if my sight is clear, Johnny Cicslewicz, a graduate of medical college In practice applies his well learned knowledge. Wait! John's office has not yet faded, Who's that pretty nurse so finely rated? It's Beatrice Nowak, a registered nurse, Here all her practice she does rehearse. Of stenographers we have about two. Dolores Klosowski and Lorraine W. Both at Studebaker Corporation. Oh, I Wonder who is in Aviation? The answer to this, as you soon will see, Are Eugene L., and Johnny B. Out of the Crystal Ball Margie Pickavet, the world will remember As a mathematician: so that We can send her Our taxes to file and bills to write. Oh, crystal ball, you are a delight. Genevieve B. is next on our list. Her's is the fame of a great artist. A designer of beautiful women's clothes, This is the branch of art she chose. So that the nation will not go unfed There'll always be Sylvia to plan our bread. A dietician she, with a love for the Navy. No wonder, she always makes potatoes and gravy. Once more the crystal becomes so dark I cannot distinguish that face-but hark! Is that not Ronald Zell, a religion teacher? 'Ie's a pastor as well as a forceful preacher. Chere I see Marge Kalmar teaching chemistry And Coach Irvin Janks striving for victory. Dh, what a happy world this crystal did find. With such brilliant tutors improving the mind Leo Jankowski dons his schoolroom expression As he tries to explain the physics lesson, To a group of boys who pay no heed But ignore the book that they will need. All these I see, are tutoring for The S. B. C. of '54 To dear Alma Mater they are all loyal, Such fziithfullness is, I must say, royal. Where now, crystal ball? There's Margie now, neat as can be Manager of a studio-well goodness me! Esther and Lorraine have a School of Dance On their graceful feet they stake their chance. Ali! a jewelry store! We all know who's in it, C. T. Williams, right up to the minute, He's his own manager now, proud as can be, Ile has diamonds, and watches, and pearls plenty Another familiar face, Alice B. And what does she do now, oh prithee? A charming hostess at any event, Impoliteness a home she'll always prevent. Now our second Alice, Alice D. Her journalistic fame's as great as can be, To great magazines she does contribute, And many fine books her pen does output. Registered nurses Clemy and Bea Have brought cheer and comfort to many at sea. Now that they're home again doing great work, From hard work and toil they never do shirk. It's Elaine Kolski'sg she's at the door. Stcphany is a movie star Oh, we've always known that she'd go far. Bernadine Z. and Irene D. The boys were gone, but not out to football practice or to a game from which they would return with lively conversation and characteristic revelry. They went to other occupa- tions and amusements, little realizing that the very walls missed their boister- ous merry-making, their confident ex- pressions, and low grunted mutterings. The tightly locked windows and the de- licate, undisturbed dust were not pro- mising that this void would soon be lilled. To break the monotony of waiting, .1 lonely jersey hanging in one of the locl-:ers began to reminisce. Do you remember the boys' satis- fied faces last August when they enter- ed the locker room after their first meeting? They were pleased that as- sistant coach Marty Lentsch was ap- pointed their head coach. This saved them some formality of getting ac- quainted, and they were able to start their double practice sessions with full zest. Yes, during those two and a half weeks before the first game, added the locker, the boys kept this room in vi- bration. They felt they were complete- ly ready for their opener against Wash- ingtong but throughout the season they admitted they were no match for these first opponents. This certainly proves that the Lions have a fine spirit of sportsmanship, doesn't it? The jersey agreed with the locker, because it got some hard use on that famous S. B. C. H. vs. Washington night. The following couple games, con- tiued the locker, still saw our boys at the short end of the scores: the Mi- shawaka Cavemen 32-6, and the Whit- ing Oilers 33-7. But in the next game in spite of a driving downpour of rain the boys fought at Niles to a 6-6 deadlock. The Niles Vikings intended to avenge a 6-0 licking received the previous year, but did not succeed. This gave our boys some satisfaction. These defeats did not depress the Lions too much, commented the jer- sey, because after the next games some of them simply said, 'The Red Devils of Michigan City gave us a 39-6 spanking, so on the following night we tied St. John's of Benton Harbor with score of 12-12. ' The poor bruised youngsters, sym- pathized the locker, didn't say very much after the Central Catholic game, but 1 did hear a couple admit that they played their hearts out. They wanted to keep the city Catholic championship, but they had to relinquish that too. The jersey then heaved and said, When I think of the last game against the Buchanan Bucks, my chest just puffs up. Many of the boys were play- ing their final game for dear S.B.C.H., and really gave their all. The team showed that it could take it, and now proved that it could dish it out. With this the jersey's chest puffed up so high that it fell off the hook, and now is waiting at the bottom of the lock- er hoping that some enthusiast of the 194-1 eleven will soon discover it. ee Mn. IN A CERTAIN SENSE, IT TAKES A LEVEL HEAD TO LOSE! Another basketball season has ended. The balls have been deflated, shellacked and stored away. Suits have been dry-cleaned in readi- ness for the next season. In fact, there is nothing left to show for the past exciting season but our recollections. VVe began it dismally, but the defeat Central Catholic, our proverbial enemy, hand- ed us did not daunt the fearless Lions. Stern determination to come out ahead influenced the seeoiid and third encounters, but to no a- vail. Perfection had not been attained, in spite of a grim resolution to achieve it. Our unsubdued spirit was rewarded, how- ever, when we rebounded with a 47-33 victory over Cassapolis, a few weeks later. Inspired by success, we kept right on the road to victory, by avenging our previous de- feat at the hands of the C. C. Indians . This flame of conquest was snuffed out soon and followed by five successive defeats, the victors being New Carlisle, Syracuse, Howe, Woodrow Wilson, and St. Joseph, respectively. With renewed vigor and zest, we once more took on Cassapolis, then the Indians , and vanquished both decisively. VVith this last came the Catholic Championship of the City . The Basketball Tournament follovved. The first game against Greene Township turned out in our favor, but in the second, the Riley Wildcats proved too powerful for us. With the crack of the final gun in the Riley game, the S. B. C. H. basketball sea- son was closed for another year. This spirit of zeal and sportsmanship con- tinues among the athletes. Although our forces had been diminished by the call of Uncle Sam, the traditional spirit to fight and not to heed the loss prevailed throughout. Sept. JAN MATEJKO Chluba i slawa narodu polskiego jest jeden iz najslawniejszych malarzy zna- ny calemu swiatu, Jan Matejko. Jego przesliczne obrazy sa podziwem dla wtzystkich, ktorzy je ogladaja. Jan Alojzy Matejko urodzil sie dnia 3-go lipca, 1838 roku, W Krakowie. Ro- dzice jego starali sie usilnie, aby od wczesnej mlodosci wychowaci syna bogo- bojnie i zaszczepici w nim zamilowanie do pracy. Mlozly Janek, jui od lat dziecinnych czul nociag do malarstwa skutkiem cze- go nieraz zasluiyl na nagane w szko- le, gclyi zamiast uwaiaci na lekcji, rysowal kolegow. To w koncu zwrocilo uwage nan nauczycieli, ktorzy dostrze- gli w Janie niezwykly talent malarski. W czternastym roku Zycia zaczal Ma- tejko uczeszozad do Szkoly Sztuk Piek- nych w Krakowic. Mimo trudnosci przeroinych, pilnoscia swoja zdobyl sty- penclium do slavwnych szkol w Bawarii i w Wiedniu. Spedzil pewien czas za gra- niqa, lecz Studia i podroie po obcycli krajach nie necily go, gdyi jak Wit Stwosz, byl on artysta Z Boiej laski. To ter! ksztalcil sie pwewainie sam, a naj- lepszym jego nauczycielem byl rodzin- ny kraj z licznymi pamiatkami narodo- wymi i historycznymi. Stanczyk i Kazanie Skargi naleia do szeregu przepieknych obrazow historycznycli. Upadek Pol- ski 11866 1:1 przedstawia sejin, na lrtorym uchwalono piervfszy rozbior Polski. W glebi widaci mlodzieniaszka polskiego w konfederatce, trzymajacego szable. To przyszlose Polski. Byl on czlowiekieni bezintere- sownym, gleboko religijnym, ban-dzo pracowityni i pelnym poswiecenia dla ojczyzny. Diziela jego licza sie na ty- siace. Patrzac na jego obrazy ina sie wraienie. THE 1 if! i MV I C T 0 R I i A it 2 l l i N l l l ji Qf1944 i Published by the Senior Class of South Bend Catholic High School - In the Service of the King Following the words of Our Lord, Come and follow Me , we have had the experience of the Lord choosing for His servants some alumni and students from amongst us. Our awe inspired gaze follows them and our prayers for their success are unceasing. They have not followed the course of the poor rich young man, but cheerfully they have answered the call of their Holy Vocation. Among these we have, Joseph Marshall, '40, and William Gieranowski, '42, at St. Mary's Seminary, Orchard Lake, Michigan. Helene Chelminiak, '40, is now Sister Helen Marie with the Resurrection Sisters in Chicago, Illinois, and Virginia Gieranowski completes her high school education with the Felician Sisters at Detroit, Michigan, whereas Eugene Paczesny joined the Holy Cross Brothers, Watertown, Wisconsin. May Our dear Lord and His Blessed Mother strengthen these voca- tions and select many more for His Service. A Prayer On a Star Somewhere on earth a boy reclines And overhead watches a star that shines, On the open plains it seems so near, Yet that same star shine on someone dear. Many a lad reflects on this fact, And a lonely soul shyly forms a pact, Selecting a star, he calls it his own, Upon that star all his fancies roam. Somewhere in a home a mother prays For her Johnny in the battle's blazeg Then she too, sees the star that Johnny chose, And because of that star, her spirit rose. Upon his star she places a prayer, Begging Our Lady to spread her care, Over the one who guards all that's dear, Her home, her family, from cruel war's fear.
