This year students dropped their usual duds only to donn everything from togas to tinfoil for the spirit dress-up days. And the spirit was hot, especially in the popular Powder Puff football game between the ladies of S.A. High. In the preliminaries, the freshmen were eliminated by the juniors, and the seniors were defeated by the sophomores. The final game brought much excitement to the junior ladies who were victorious over the sopho- mores and were named the 1987 Pow- der Puff Champs. The grueling tug-of-war which fol- lowed the ladies ' football game was won by the seniors. South Adams principal, Larry Piety, also got into the spirit of things. He quickly found out (the hard way!) that being voted the lucky winner of the kiss-a-pig con- test wasn ' t all it was cracked up to be. And crack up we did, when during Thurdsay afternoon ' s pep session, Mr. Pi- ety forlornly claimed his prize — a kiss from the ™ prettiest pig in the litter! There is more to spirit week than pigs, of course. There ' s the Lip Sync contest. This gave students a chance to get up on stage and sync, jam, and jive to their favorite tunes. This year ' s talented winner was a group of fresh- men girls: Rochelle Sharp, Chastity Wulliman, Lesley Beer, and Donna Double. They synced their way to first place with the song, The Good Ship Lollipop . Following the Lip Sync contest, ev- eryone flocked the heat of the bon- fire. Football coaches and Senior play- ers spoke to the crowd and lifted ev- eryone ' s spirits for the game the following evening. Before the game could begin, though, the crowning of the 1987 Homecoming Queen and King took place. Last year ' s queen and king, Rhonda Tschannon and Kent Lehman were present to do the honors Rhonda had the privilege of crowning the new South Adams royalty, Lori Liechty and Ryan Holley. Lori and Ryan reigned over the game against the An- gola Hornets, as well as the remainder of the evening. Though the contest against the Hor- nets was not won, the Starfires played an exciting game. The crowd was also treated to an en- tertaining half-time show presented by the band, poms, flags, and feature twirler. They performed a difficult show featuring various favorite Disney melodies. After all this excitement, many stayed and danced the night away to the hot tunes played by the feature d.j., Off the Record . The week was fit for royalty and was planned by the Student Council — to make dreams and memories last for- ever. y A walk on the moon, some finger-lickin ' barbequed chicken, and even a bit of sci- ence. What more could one want? Who knows. But, the Music Boosters know what you want at their annual Chicken BBQ, Carnival, and Science Fair. These fun-filled events were held on March 17, this year. In order to get everyone revved up for an exciting evening, the Music Boosters begin the barbeque early in the afternoon. So early in fact, that by the time school is over everyone is starved because of the wonderful smells that have been floating through the halls all day. People begin picking up their chicken din- ners right after school. The meals can be purchased until around 6:30 or 7:00, or when- ever the chicken has disap- peared! When the eating is over, the fun begins. There are so many activities to do, it ' s im- possible to name them all. But there is something for every- one. The basketball free- throw game is for those who like sports, the moonwalk is for the little (and Big?) ones who love to sweat and laugh so hard their stomach hurts, and Bingo is for the adults who think they better take it easy after such a big, delicious chicken dinner. In order to make the even- ing more enjoyable for those who are into science, the an- nual Science Fair is held the same evening. Students spend over a month prepar- ing for this (they ' re supposed to anyway!). OiiM 1 NiKe Y jO KVl UCK Hotshot Debbie Zurcher won first place in the biology division in the Science Fair. Cinderella is the story of a young girl who works like a slave for her stepmother and stepsisters. Like Cinderella, cast members work themselves like slaves to learn their lines and songs before performance. When the clock strikes twelve, many cast members are just turning out their lights after returning home from a late night musical practice. The week of performance is often very hectic, with the most late practices to finalize last minute details. Performance night is a magi- cal night. There is some ner- vousness, but when the curtain rises, a magical spell is cast over the stage. S.A. alumnus Matt Leh- man was named State Star Agri-Businessman. Another alumnus, Kent Liechty, 1986 State Star Farmer, won two proficiency awards. He was runner-up at the national convention in Kansas City in Diversified livestock profi- ciency and served on the State Executive Committee as Section II director. Greg Beer, elected as District VI reporter for 1987-88, and Ryan Holley were delegates. Jeff Bauman played drums in the state band for the third year. The chapter ' s scrapbook, a BOAC area winner, placed 36th out of 216 chapters. Following the convention, Mark Burry, Scott Von Gun- ten, Greg Beer, and Jeff Grogg, members of the Pur- due Latta Team, quizzed their way into the semi-finals at the Indiana Stae Fair. Another highlight at the fair featured display cases on each of the S.A. proficiency winners plus a special display on Matt Leh- man, the State Star Agri-Busi- nessman. During the school year var- ious judging contests pro- vided ample learning oppor- tunities for eager participants. In the county soils contest Greg Bollenbacher ranked as high individual chapter mem- ber. At the area contest, the team of Greg Beer, who earned high individual, Jeff Grogg, Dan Neuensch- wander, and Dorsey Bisel grabbed first place honors. The Council roused school spirit with activities during Homecoming Week and Boys Basketball Sectional Week. These activities included a lip-sync contest, powder- puff football, dances, and dress-up days. Other activities such as the canned food drive for project share and the new link-a- chain contest for the penny pitch showed the Council ' s community interest and con- cern. During the school year a convocation titled Bridges was shown. Bridges was a multi-media show which was shown to the entire student body to encourage leadership and communication within the shcool, as well as at home and anywhere else the stu- dent may eventually go. All of these activities took much planning and prepara- tion. ( ieen£eadc You ' ve got to want it to win it and we want it BAD! chanted the cheerleaders to the players, urging them on to win another exciting game. The cheer was also true for cheerleading, a sport in itself. You had to want to be a spirit raiser for your school, and you needed to want it badly enough to work hard for it. Cheerleading was not an ac- tivity for someone bored by turn-overs and time-outs. Neither would it delight someone who was scared of heights or too embarrassed to scream their lungs out during a triple-overtime, nail-biting, hair-raising battle! Being a cheerleader took spirit and strength. Many times the girls began practic- ing almost immediately after try-outs to prepare for camp in the summer. During camp, many cheers, chants, and rou- tines were learned by the girls so they would have a great va- riety of material to bring home to the crowds during football and basketball sea- son. The male cheerleaders added to the style of the squad as they assisted in many exciting builds and cheers, es- pecially during basketball sea- son. The guys were required to come to practice just like the girls. The South Adams spirit raisers knew what teamwork means and that practice makes perfect. J.V. Basketball Cheerleaders. Sud- denly a hush covers the crowd as sixteen high school girls run out onto the floor. Just as everyone begins to wonder who they are, the an- nouncer cries, introducing the 1987-1988 South Adams Superstars performing for you to ' Opportunities ' . Before that magical mo- ment can happen, there must be much preparation for the season. The work begins at tryouts. Many hours of hard work and sweat go into learn- ing a routine that will be per- formed for three judges. Also, judged separately, is the girls ' ability to do the splits and a series of high kicks. After the last performance the girls wait and pray that they will hear their name called with those who made it. The girls who make it go to camp for one week during the summer. There, each girl learns different routines that she will share with the others. Grueling practices dominate the activities at camp, but it is not just hard work. There are many late night gab sessions, food raids, cheering and yell- ing competitions with the other squads, and a special bonding that makes a group of girls a team. After learning the routines, the girls must practice and polish them. They first show their stuff at the many football games by accompanying the band and flags. After football comes the Superstars ' shining season — basketball. Finally the moment that the Superstars have been waiting for — the actual performance at the first home basketball game. ftk Ji(m m y[ ' {■' m.w to-c c+iw lA fti k f;f(ut pimo Amw Bc v i , Tarcm (ft- -1mm- Affpltkr, nir, woft — Front Row: Co-Captain Amy Barrett, Captain Jessica Bauer, Heidi Baum- gartner, Terri Dubach, Lori Liechty, Julie Steiner, Jenny Wolf, Tara Wulli- man. The group always adds a touch of pride when they present the American Flag at basketball and football games. The corp also performs with the marching band in many parades during the summer and fall. However, the girls ' season starts way before the parades and halftime shows. It actually begins during try-outs. Dur- ing tryout practices the hope- fuls are taught drills, moves, and correct posture. The girls are also taught a routine which they then perform for judges at try-outs. After tryouts, some girls may go to camp. Camp is quite a learn- ing experience! More drills and routines are learned for the fall and winter seasons. However, the captains of the flag corp and the members make up many of the routines which are performed throughout the year. The flag corp is a vital part of the South Adams Music Department since they per- form with the band in the fall. Their brightly colored flags and sharp routines add flair and variety to many basketball halftimes also. w pPT! ywJ( int (X Mm 0- ii cte i VmiU (X I would advise anyone that has played with the band for a number of years to stick with it till you graduate . . . you can have a great time in band if you give it your all, com- mented senior Linda Worley. The Chamber Choir, under the di- rection of Mr. Epp, is one of the reasons. The Chamber Choir is a se- lect group of juniors and sen- iors that perform at various places and events. This year the Chamber Choir per- formed in five sacred con- certs and all of the school concerts. The Chamber Choir has been noted for its tremen- dous achievements at iSSMA competitions. This year the choir entered in division I with two Madrigal groups and one mixed group. They con- tinued on to state where they received Superior ratings. Not only did they move up by three wins from last year, but many close games were played toward the end of the season when the vic- tory could have easily gone to the Starfires. Many varsity players felt that there was really only one team that should have beaten them this year — East Noble. All of the other games could have been won. One coach thought of a phrase that applies to those games: We find ways to beat ourselves. One problem plagued the athletes almost all year — in- 66 WE IMPROVED; HECK, WE WON SOME! Mark Wynn f f juries. Already a small team, injuries meant fewer contact practices, and in turn, less time in hitting preparation for the game. Nevertheless, the team practiced as hard as possible, and even the in- jured players put forth their best efforts. The coaches said that new players will always help the team. Committed players and those who know their capabilities and responsibil- ities on the field were the most important players to have on the team. If the team continues to give their best, the only thing left for an even better team next year will be student support. Coach Sorg was pleased with their efforts and thought that they played especially well against Parkway. Playing against Parkway after the varsity team had lost could have discouraged them, but they hung in there and played very well. Wrestling is a strenuous individual sport that re- quires 50% physical ability and 50% self-confidence, said senior Ryan Holley. To achieve the physical ability the wrestlers prepared for a match in practice. A normal wrestling practice included such activities as a 20 minute run, climbing ropes, lifting weights, and working on wrestling moves for 15 con- secutive minutes. After a wrestler was physically fit, he set individual goals to reach. When the goal was accom- plished, a bigger goal was set to achieve. Self-confidence grew as the wrestlers visualized themselves in control on the mat. They pictured the win- ning pin and then went out and executed. Such winning moves required quick deci- sions and immediate re- sponses during the match. 66 WRESTLING . . . . . . 50% PHYSICAL ABILITY AND 50% SELF- CONFIDENCE Ryan Hotley 9 9 Afterwards the wrestler re- viewed his moves and found places where he might im- prove. Announcements were ordered from Tim Bresnahan, Mom was look- ing for someone to make that perfect cake, and you were worried about all the finals coming up and hoping you ' d actually graduate. No matter now much sen- iors looked forward to graduation, nothing was go- ing to prepare them for the many mixed emotions they felt on that day. May 22 was a day of joy and sadness. It caught gradu- ates wondering what was really ahead. It was then that they realized they might never see many of their classmates again. When they marched into the gym to Pomp and Circum- stance and saw everyone present standing to honor their class, a rusn of excite- ment struck. After the senior octet sang Passages , An- drea Schaffter, president of the Student Council recalled the memories the class had made together. Maybe tears sprang to their eyes as the emotional song Friends was sung by Kaye Haines and Troy Liechty. N ark Bresnahan, the president of the senior class, previewed the future when he wondered aloud What Lies Ahead? The senior choir inspired hope for the future when it sang Dream a Dream . Finally, the most anticipat- ed moment arrived — the distribution of diplomas. Jack Shoaf, school board president, awarded the di- plomas, and each graduate received applause. Valedic- torian Rick Gorrell and Salu- tatorian Suzanne Crabill were recog- nized for their accomplish- ments throughout their high school years. Then, all too quickly, gradu- ation was over. Tassles were turned, hats were tossed, and all of the class of 1988 marched out of the gym. Some were crying, some laughing, and others saying, We nave to have mom or dad take a picture of us! Tears flowed, nugs were exchanged, and everyone soon headed for home to their own reception or fam- ily gathering. A day like May 22 will not soon be gorgotten. Nor will all those special people who touched your life through high school. May the class of ' 88 always remember the precious moments they shared and smile or even cry. Everyone was On The Edge of a Dream. This year the ju- nior class elected to hold prom on Saturday evening, April 23, at Don Hall ' s Guesthouse in Ft. Wayne. Though it was a bit chilly and rainy outside, no one let the weather dampen the festive mood of a wonderful prom night. When couples began arriv- ing they were greeted warmly by junior class sponsors and then proceeded to have their picture taken. Prom pictures are very valuable momentos for the juniors and seniors. Everyone looks forward to getting them back at school and comparing them to all of their friends. Who shut their eyes? Who ' s hair was messed up? After picture time, the guests could wander into the spacious ballroom and choose their table for the evening. Each table was beau- tifully set, with vases of pink and white carnations to add a final touch. The music and dancing began before the buffet-style meal so each per- son could work up a good ap- petite. Finally, the delicious meal was served. One could choose from an array of meats, vegetables, salads, and desserts. Soon after the meal the guests were dancing again. No one danced too long though, because the time had come to crown the 1988 Prom Queen and King. Each of the six candidates were named. This year ' s Prom Court included Mark Bresna- han, Ted Minch, Greg Raff, Tara Wulliman, Andrea Schaffter, and Laura Flores. Fi- nally, the Queen and King were announced. Laura Flores and Greg Raff were crowned as Prom Royalty and danced, along with the other nomi- nees, one slowdance. After the crowning, the flashbulbs were flashing and the con- gratulations were said. The dance floor was again open, but around 10:30 and 11:00 people began leaving to cele- brate at a party or late night movie. it was a night of glamour and excitement thanks to the hardworking junior class who put it all together. 1988 PROM COURT Front Row: Tara Wulliman, Andrea Schaffter, Laura Flo- res.
