Main Street Berne, Indiana 4671 1 GENEVA ELEMENTARY Geneva, Indiana 46740 SPORTS 26 All of us have our own lives to live. Feelings change as time progresses. Events that seemed important during the young- er days are now less meaningful. Lasting friendships cannot be broken by time. Strong bonds between compan- ions hold up even under the greatest emo- tional strain. Years slip by without notice. Weeks become months, seasons become years, and decades become centuries. It is only when impatiently watched that time drags its feet. Life is like a hockey game that is di- vided into 3 periods. People are born, they live, and they die. Specific life jour- neys for all persons are only known by the Creator. Making the best of what time is left on this earth is the best way to survive. Life will continue to exist, no matter what time has to offer. Beginning the third century in the recorded history of the United States is a big job. Remembering the bicentennial past is important, but more so, it is im- portant to think about our roles in this new time and how time will remember THE school shines in dawn ' s early morning light. Life has not yet entered its haUs. I ' •«««« wRSSWiMKSssa8i s te. THE halls fill as the early busses arrive spill- ing students into the once lifeless building. ALSO filled with students in the morning is the library where friends meet friends, and sports-minded students read the morning paper. TAKING advantage of the quiet time before the first bell was Mr. Mertz, preparing his biolo- gy lecture for class. A DAY CONTINUES WHEN the final beU rings, hundreds of stu- dents race to their lockers and reach the buses just in time to catch a ride. THOSE students not leaving at 3:05 stayed after school for athletic practices and play re- hearsals. .... time hurries on, and the leaves that are green turn to brown .... Hello Hello Hello Hello. AFTERNOON classes pass quickly for some, but for others who axe constant clock watchers, the last three periods are an eternity. Y The editors and Publications staff proudly dedicate this 1977 issue of RE- FLECTION to Mr. Woodrow W. Inks. Mr. Inks has served the South Adams High School for 20 years. All totalled, he has been teaching 30 years. Mr. Inks is the sen ior class advisor and teaches Civics and Sociology to the seniors. He received his college education from Indiana Central University and received his Masters degree from Indiana University. Mr. Inks resides in Fort Wayne and owns an extensive col- lection of antiques. Receiving the yearbook dedication is an honor, but it is an even greater prize because the senior class al- most unanimously named Mr. Inks. Second period Jeopardy game. QUEEN Ann Minnich, with lollipop in hand, entertained the basketball crowd with her imita- tion of Telly Savalas. Newly crowned King Phil Litwiller and Queen Ann Minnich presided over the 19- 76 Homecoming festivities. After their coronation, the band followed with a splendid halftime show featuring the se- nior auxiliary corps. McAllister offered much relief to the large turn-out at the dance, seeking to escape the sub-freezing weather. All the calories from the finger lickin ' good chicken which was bought at the FFA ' s chicken barbecue were burned up while the tensions of the nerve racking game supplied the energy. Garrett barely slipped by the gallant Starfires with a last second victory by the score of 40-36. DUE TO THE DESTRUCTION OF 72 PICTURES, INCLUDING MOST OF THE HOMECOMING SHOTS, WE WERE UN- ABLE TO PROVIDE AN ADEQUATE COVERAGE OF HOMECOMING FEST- IVITES. ENJOYING the Homecoming Dance were seniors Wilbur Snyder, Chico Martinez, Kim Jones, Mary Liechty, Andrey Liechty, and many more. THE tough Starfire defense stopped a potent Garrett Railroader offense during the Home- coming Game. Scraped knuckles from stuffing Kleen- ex, sniffles from the cold night air, and drooping eyes from the late nights accom- panied Homecoming week. Things started off with a bang as hammers hit the frame- work of the floats which were being con- structed according to new regulations this year. The seniors ' efforts were rewarded as their float won the first place honors. Tlie freshman class placed second, and the juniors won third prize. A liglit breakfast was served, the couples changed clothes, and then they went bowling. THANK YOU JUNIORS!!!! After experiencing hundreds of lost library books, dumped or hidden tote trays, overcrowded totetray rooms, and numerous traffic jams, the administration decided to take some action. The solu- tion: S13,000 for 678 orange, black and gold lockers. Initial student reaction to the metal monsters was mixed. Some complained of the location, but others welcomed the thought of their coats and gym bags being right where they left them. Absent minded schoolmates had one big problem. Several dents, and bruised fists and toes later, they finally remem- bered their combinations. How many times have friends approached the locker door shut before all necessary items were removed. Although burgular proof and sometimes even owner proof, the general concensus approved of them. Locked Up, Walled in Also new this year were 41 1 feet of walls, added to close the open concept. It took three men three weeks to install them, but their time and effort was great- ly appreciated. Finally a study hall was quiet enough for studying. English class was not a mix- ture of Spanish verbs and mathematics problems. Students really received a break because routine class lectures were broken up with video tapes, movies and film- strips. For those homesick students, some moveable dividers were kept. The walls turned out to be a real good investment except for thoses with claustrophobia. Classes were not disrupted by between class stragglers. While writing on the blackboards, students could finish with- out the board walking away, being need- ed somewhere else. ENGLISH class was much quieter with the walls added. Brad Zimmerman, Pam Alberson, and Cindy Schwartz studied hard for a test. TAKING a break between classes is Ann Minnich, resting peacefully after being swal- lowed by Kim Jones ' locker. RECEIVING final instructions before the nmrch were the graduates. All their assistance was appreciated very much by the South Adams student body, the Student Coun- cil officers, and the administration. Thanks to everyone. SPOTTERS for the trampoUne convo were Jane Rush, Matt Werst, Mindy Coblentz, and Ted Licchty. WORLD Champion trampohnist Ron Smith performed death defying somersaults and back nips at a convo. SUITING up to play Santa Clause at the Christmas Dance was Mr. Agler. He also visited the Head Start Classes. POSING in the hbrary was the entire South Adams Student Council headed by President Allen Caffee. KENT Frank and Ted Beitk-r get their make- up from Miss Raudenbush. KATHY Reinhard, Rhea Ann Sprunger, and Deb Bixlcr watch for an entrance off stage. KIM, Kathy, Mary, and Lori performed at the awards convocation. A DRAMA CLUB SPORTING greased back hair and an old sweater, Pete Mosser dressed for the fifties. AC ' TINC; out a romantic scene were Kim Jones and Kent Irank. The drama club frequently entertained tlie SA student body with humorous plays. Miss Raudenbush and Mrs. Myers were the directors of the club. Two plays at one time allowed the entire cast to participate every convo. CADET TEACHERS CADET Teachers: (Front) Pam Augsburger, Heidi McCrory, Marslia Shindler, Vickie Balsiger, Julie Sauder, Diann Baker, (Back) June Moser, Raelene Bixler, Pam Batterbee, Kim Wulliman, Natalie Miracle, Deb Hoffer, and Carol Herman. Published bi-monthly, THE SOUTH- ERN STAR informed and entertained the student body. Sporting a new look under editor Terri Agler, the paper enjoyed a successful publication year. Other staffers include; Myra Dubach, Randy Lehman, Mary Liechty, Pete Mosser, Keith Neuen- schwander, Sonnie Steiner, and Joni Van Emon. Watching over the staff was Mrs. Neuenschwander. PETl: Mosser, Kim Jones, Audrey Liechty, Kathy Moser, Tanya Lehman, and Joni Van Emon all contributed to the newspapers. PERFORMING double duty every second period was Mrs. Neuenschwander. She was ad- visor for both newspaper and yearbook. The SOUTHERN STAR WORKING hard to meet the deadline was sports writer Randy Lehman. MARY Liechty logged a lot of hours typing for the newspaper. i y H EMI6S POSTI.D on the art room wall were many IN typing class, all the sophomores supposed- paintings and other drawings done by outsland- ly learned how to type. SHOWN teaching during his first period ad- vanced business class was Mr. Miller. He also managed the cafeteria. Mrs. Weimer, my packet didn ' t check out or Mrs. Rhoades, I typed a whole letter without having my fingers on the right home keys was just some of the business department ' s jargon this year. Business courses were taught by Mr. Miller, Mrs. Rhoades, and Mrs. Weimer. Courses ranged from typing for beginners to Accounting II for future Certified Public Accountants. The typing classes this year had a taste of blindness. All the typewriters had capped keys. , CAFETERIA ENGLISH SNACK Bar cooks Henrietta Nussbaum and Joan BLxler get set foi the noon hour rush for the pizza. BEFORE a wrestUng match, junior Jay Sprunger enjoyed a meal prepared in the cafe- teria. The cafeteria staff, under chief cook Dorcas Moser, started from scratch to make every meal. 120 pounds of 100% all beef hamburger and five cases of french fries were used to feed hundreds of hun- gry students and faculty in one sitting. Pizza was the number one meal with 519 served. In addition to the regular meal, the snack bar was a popular lunch time place. Chef salads, 25-30 per day, were consumed along with chocolate and va- nilla shakes. Henrietta Nussbaum said the seniors liked pudding. The English department which was headed by Mr. Jerry Flueckiger provided a varied curriculum for South Adams stu- dents. The seniors wrote thematic units and digested plenty of grammar. The jun- iors completed their first term paper; the underclassmen were introduced to plays by William Shakespeare. MANY teachers cherished their private din- ing area so that they could avoid their students long enough to digest the food. KEEPING her grade book up to date as she watched her study hall was Mrs. Raudenbush. SOPHOMORES Robin Moore, Greta Eicher, and others in Mrs. Minch ' s English class read their book report books. PHIL Sprunger, Rick Hill, and Curt Van Emon look up vocabulary word definitions for their test. LANGUAGE Arts provided a wide variety of curriculum. Miss Andrews and Teresa Fravel demonstrate the latest dance steps. The Industrial Arts students became familiar with industry by operating nia- cliinery and developing work skills neces- sary for success within the industrial world. Industrial Arts classes offered machine skills, drafting, and building trades. In these classes, Mr. Oswalt and Mr. Mosser help students prepare for future jobs. Eiglith graders formed companies and sold products. AN expert in industrial arts, Kent Frank shapes a piece of wood. INDUSTRIAL ARTS HELPING Roger Cover and Micah Kuhn was Mr. Oswalt. FINISHING a delicious meal was the senior Home Economics class. HOME ECONOMICS ENJOYING a Home Economics meal were Nancy Nussbaum, Diana Ford and Cheri Jones. Cooking seemed to be the students ' and the teachers ' favorite class period in Home Ec. Classes cooked pizzas, lunches, and breads on a budget of $25 per week. Mrs. Yake wished that all of the classes were semester or 9 week classes so stu- dents could choose from a variety of de- sired subjects. Mrs. Merkle said that peo- ple who are not as smart in math or science shine in Home Economics. CLASSES in Home Economics must do a lot of research before starting to cook. Shhh! A library, as defined in the dictionary, is a building housing a collection of books used for QUIET research or pleasure read- ing. The SA library may resemble the above definition but was used for many other events during the past year. The newspaper staff held an Easter egg hunt in the library. Early morning arrivers and lunch hour escapees also used this quiet place appropriate for friendly chats. CAREFULLY scanning the library for gum chewers, noisy talkers, and other assorted of- fenders was Mrs. Linder, library watchdog. USING the library for a demonstration, Mr. Sheets launched his Polish Rocket for his science class. Quiet Please! HELPING Pam Alberson, Lois Doherty, and Sue Yoder with an English assignment was Mrs. Minch. I-RIENDS congregate in the library before school begins to meet and discuss the latest gossip. Language SPANISH students under the direction of Miss Andrews learned their language. Spanish, French, and Latin were the foreign language choices for SA students this year. Miss Andrews. Mrs. Neuensch- wander. and Mrs. Myers taught those sub jects. Highlighting the language program was a summer trip to France by Mrs. Neuenschwander and some of her stu- dents. Math was taught by Mr. Huser, Mr. Leistner. Mr. Sprunger, and Mr. Grogg. Senior math students especially enjoyed learning to program Monroe, the almost human calculator.
