The reflections on a day well spent furnish us with joys more pleasing than ten thousand triumphs. - Thomas a Kempis Looking back brings smiles and laughter, tears and pain, a funny, scarey feeling inside. Time For Even the most avid defender of the six-period schedule will admit that the same routine day after day gets a bit monotonous. Thus, convocations were always a welcome break. We did pretty well this year, averaging about one a month. Not all were of a superb quality, but a big round of applause was always given (ulterior motive? oh nol) and students still recall that girl who played ' Chicago ' , that black guy who got us all singing, and the man who told us to ' pinch that fuse. ' Student Relaxation Homecoming Is A October 9, 1970 was undoubtedly one of the most memorable days of the school year. For the first time. Homecoming was held in the evening under the new football lights. In honor of the occasion, it poured rain. Nevertheless, spirits remained un- dampened; the cheerleaders wore drycleaner bags, floats took on plastic coverings, queen candidates retired to cars, and the team donned towels. The evening ended with Vicki Steiner as our new queen, the seniors taking first place with Big Green, and a lot of faithful fans distraught over the defeat of the soggy, but super Starfires. Even Deb is enthused about Homecoming! Arouse Spirit Junior-Senior Thanks to the expert previewing of Dallas Liechty, the highlight of the 1971 Junior-Senior reception was undoubtedly the inspirational movie. However, there were a few people who did not stay for the entire film. Overall, though, the Junior- Senior reception was beautiful. The decorations were lovely and it was obvious that the Juniors had worked quite hard on them. Four of a kind provided pleasant Listening during the buffet supper. lUch Briggs and the Flukey Luke Awards added something - we ' re not quite sure what - to the evening. Fountain of Love as visited on May 16, 1971, was much appreciated by the Senior Class. Reception Graduation . The 1971 graduation ceremonies came to a close amidst the clamor of joyous shouts, tears, and the fading strains of Pomp and Circumstance. Yes, the night of May 23rd was the ending for the 136 graduating seniors. Along with the ending of their high school days came the ending of old friendships, class parties, and for some, formal education. But it was also the beginning of a new life, new responsibilities, new friendships, further education and new opportunities. beginning Of A New Road 0 51 ■% j - A CADEMICS English Conveys Our Ideas The Library Expands Our Minds Formal library science lessons enable the li- brarian to introduce students to new authors and to books which the student might not be famiUar with. The librarian also tries to find books which fit both the interest and the reading ability of each student. The primary emphasis in Literature, English 12, was upon Uterary interpretation and compo- sition. Miss Blue, The English 12 students were a nice group to work with. Juniors on the other hand attempted to do a research project and paper. The teachers empha- size the importance of American literature. Freshmen and Sophomores learn from prepared packets. These packets include sections of lit- erature, grammar, speech, and composition. speech And Language iid In Communication The basic purpose of Speech is to better prepare our students to communicate with others in our society, for only through commu- nication can this society exist. Yo esperc que despues de mi clase, estudianted deseran viajar a otros paoses y visitar con la gente. Math Solves Problems . An individualized math program was used at S.A. this year in all four grade levels. The individualized math program allowed the students to use a variety of text books rather than one. Algebra II, Geometry, Chemistry, Physics, and College Math were all taught in this manner. Sciences Discover New Ones Freshman Biology is conducted on a weekly topic basis and is team taught. A new assignment is given at the beginning of each week, and a large group lecture is conducted on Monday. The large groups are designed to give out information to the entire group and to motivate the students for that week ' s assignment. This program is not individualized in the sense that students go at their own pace, but it is in that there are many different materials available to each student to help him understand basic Biology more in line with his ability. Advanced Biology is a truly individualized biology program. Students are re- sponsible for deciding what they want to study in the field of biology. They complete four contracts in one year ' s study, that is one each nine weeks. This allows the student to study the things in biology that he desires or needs. The strength of a program such as this is that individual needs can and are being met. Thoughts From There were three basic history courses required at S. A. this year. World History for the Sophomores, U.S. history for the Juniors, and Civics for the Sen- iors. In World History this year the Sophomores completed a study of the World Wars, which was followed by a study of the European, Latin American, and South American countries. Their year was completed by studying Man; ancient, medieval, and modern. In U. S. History, the Juniors leamed our basic rights, why we deserved them, how we obtained them, and what we should do with them. For the Seniors the curriculum was a little different. The first semester they studied Civics, which is the study of the rights and responsibilities of citizeais at various levels of government - local, state, and feder- al. The second semester they studied Sociology which is the study of society and its environment. Past To Present r Students Geared The primary goal of the Business Department is to prepare students for entry level occupations in the busi- ness world and, also, to provide students with a basic business background for further training in secretarial and or other business areas. Bookkeeping I gives the student the basic theory and understanding of accounting. Typing I gives the student the opportunity to learn the basic fundamentals of typewriting. Typing II provides an opportunity for students to apply the basic knowledge gained in Typing I to advanced typing problems. The girls in Office Practice concen- trate on producing mailable copies of all their work. Also, a large amount of ditto typing is done for teachers. General Business covers many areas of basic business principles that are important to all students. Areas taught are: basic fundamentals of banking, buying var- ious types of insurance, computing interest on loans and notes. Business Law was available to South Adams students for the first time this year. The primary goal was to give students an insight into the basic fundamentals of business law. or Business Tomorrow ' s Homemakers The ninth grade students this year studied units on nutritions, planning and preparing, and serving breakfasts and lunches. They also worked on clothing construction and grooming. The tenth grade students worked on home nursing and foods with emphasis on dinners and meat cookery. They also worked on advanced clothing construction. Home Ec ele ven studied family relations, child care, and housing and home furnishings. Home Ec twelve did independent projects in sewing and spent time on good projects. They worked on some comparisons of various food products. And Engineers The Industrial Art students should comprehend the techni- cal and related information basic to an intelligent under- standing of the occupation, therefore this would provide him with the opportunity to plan, study, and construct by using his own initiative and ability. Vocational Electronics is a class to teach the various as- pects of an electronics technician job to junior and senior boys. This is a class designed to follow on job training lines as established by industry. The ninth grade Agriculture students were introduced to Agriculture, FFA, judging and production techniques. The tenth grade students studied more detailed study of Judging and Production. The Junior and Senior students study marketing, nutrition, farm management, production of specific commodities and advanced Ag mechanics. Art — A Way Of Expression This year the art program at South Adams has been expanded to include three studio classes for high school students. Along with this a program is conducted for elementary pupils. The goal of the Art Department is not to make everyone a professional artist but rather to instill an appre- ciation for art and self expression. For many, art may become a life long hobby, or interest. Others may discover they have a career awaiting them in some field of art or art related endeavor. Whatever path the student chooses, we strive to make the program as varied and interesting as present facilities permit. - %: P.E. — Conditioning Our Bodies The Physical Education classes spent most of their time participating in various sports. Some of these are golf, tennis, soccer, volleyball, bad- minton, and table tennis. Health is basically concemed with educating the students about the drug problem, personal grooming, first aid, and driving safety. This is accomplished through the use of movies, instruc- tional materials, skits, and lectures. J(.. If Mi f 1 J ' ] ' .( vy ' ' ' ' • ' ' «■ i ! They have spent much of their time, money, and patience for the cause of raising school spirit. They have jumped, screamed, cried, yelled, flip- flopped, and smarkled, at us. Their endurance and vigor have put the rest of us to shame. Both the pep club and the basketball team have appreciated the smiles and cheers of Jo Neuenschwander, Sandy Lehman, Rita Roth, Judy Houser, and Karen Van Emon. Varsity Football Even though much of the football season weather was cold, these girls came to boost the morale of our football team. They came with their sweaters, colds, and goose- bumps. Little Jana Thornton held her own against each gust of wind; queen Vicki Steiner donned a beautiful smile through her fuzzy hair; Barb McKean, the lone sopho- more cheerleader, energetically held the flag for the underclassmen; Carol Reusser voiced her support at each game, deafening a few front row spectators; and last but not least, junior Karen Flueckiger coaxed the adults as well as students to back our Star- fire football team. he Scenes Reserve Basketball often the reserve cheerleaders are left out of the glory and honor bestowed upon basket- ball cheerleaders. Many times people do not attend the reserve games let alone respond to the cheers of these girls. We feel that Jean Baumgartner, Caria Lehman, and Carol Dust- man have done a fine job despite the general lack of enthusiasm. Freshman Basketball Fan buses with no fans, games on fun- ny nights and at strange hours have not overridden the energetic school spirit of our freshman cheerleaders. We feel that Gaye Sprunger, Deb Horn, Deb Kuhn, and Denise Hinkel have a fine future in cheerleading. GOOD-LUCK, Girls! Half-Time Entertainers Half-time can be rather bor- ing, consisting of walking around and drinking a coke. However, Linda Sprunger, our shapely feature twirler, did much to dispel that half-time bore- dom. She displayed not only her talents, but those of her pupils. Without any disrespect intended; the flag was definitely more applaudable when carried by our flag bearers, Ruth Bertsch and Vivian Liechty. Many fans have often wondered who the twin drum majors were. We still don ' t know but would like to give credit for theii per- formance in this unheralded but noteworthy active role. P.S. Good job Ron and Tom Hewitt. V Noon-Time Show-Offs f Team No. 1 Rich Briggs Gary Bollenbacher Kendric Christner Gaylord Lehman Jim Weidler Doyle Martin The intramural basketball teams really shined this year in their daily noontime exhibitions. Adding to the regular basketball game procedure, the boys employed football, soccer, and wrestling tactics in the games. Injuries ranged from a split ear to a nearly broken wrist. These boys truly added spice and excitement to the 1970-1971 noon hours. From Guadalupe He Came Last fall the senior class learned something concerning international relations. Joel Granier, exchange student from Guadalupe, returned to his native country after spend- ing three months at South Adams. We sincerely hope he received a favorable impres- sion of Americans from his visit. In Memory For those of you who knew Jody Grogg, memories of the cheerful, smiling boy remain vivid. Nevertheless death always comes unexpectedly to the young. But time is a healer. Months and even years have passed and words are difficult to find. Juniors . . . We have taken time to look back. What did we see? The Circle Game Yesterday a child came out to wonder caught a dragonfly inside a jar fearful when the sky was full of thunder and tearful at the falling of a star. Then the child moved ten times round the seasons skated over ten clear frozen streams words like, when you ' re older, must appease him And promises of some day make his dreams. Sixteen springs and sixteen summers gone now Cartwheels turn to carwheels thru the town. And they tell him, take your time, it won ' t be long now till you drag your feet to slow the circles down. So the years spin by and now the boy is twenty Tho his dreams have lost some grandeur coming true They ' ll be new dreams, maybe better dreams and plenty Before the last revolving year is through And the seasons they go round and round And the painted ponies go up and down We ' re captive on the carousel of time We can ' t return, we can only look behind From where we came And go round and round and round In the circle game. - Joni Mitchell SPONSORS The 1971 Reflection Staff, Graduating Students and Underclassmai wish to express their thanks to the following firms, establishments and individuals who have supported this yearbook.
